Succubus Sunday - Lilith as a DCC Patron (Part VI)

This spell was inspired by Love's Pain from the Book of Vile Darkness (3.0). It kind of bothers me because of the the Women in Refrigerator trope, but I still like the idea of the spell. It's evil and could just as easily kill a child or best friend.

Envy's Spite

Level: 2 (Lilith) Range: Personal Duration: varies Activation Time: 1 round Saving Throw: Fortitude vs Caster Check

General: Few patrons are as jealous as Lilith. To spurn her for another is to invite a slow painful death. This vile magic allows the caster to hurt the person the target loves most.

Manifestation A greenish-black lance of energy shoots from the caster's hand at the target.

1 Lost, failure, and patron taint.

2-11 Lost. Failure.

12-13 The target's closest friend or dearest loved one is wracked in pain and takes 1d6 damage. The target gets an odd feeling about their loved one, but is oblivious to the damage they took. If no individual qualifies for this, the subject takes the damage.

14-17 The targets closest friend or dearest loved one is wracked in pain and takes 1d6 damage for every two caster levels. The target gets a brief that that something is wrong with the loved one, but isn't aware of why. If no individual qualifies for this, the subject takes the damage.

18-19 As result 14-17, but the target is also made aware that their love one is taking the damage because of their bond.

20-23 As result 14-17, but the target is able to perceive what's happening in their mind. The target is stunned for one round by this revelation.

24-27 As result 20-23, but the target's  closest friend/loved one takes 1d6 damage per caster level.

28-29 As result 24-27, but the target is stunned for 1d6 rounds.

30-31 As result 28-29, but the target's closest friend/loved one is teleported to a location within 20 feet of the caster before taking damage.

32+ As result 30-31, closest friend/loved one cannot be resurrected by any means on the material plane if killed by the spell (though quests to the underworld and such might still be able to return the victim to the realm of the living).

  1. I don't think it fits the fridge trope too strongly, since you can target anyone and it can affect anyone loved by that person.

It also seems like you could set this up for an interesting twist when someone unexpected is affected by the spell.

    1. Thanks for the reassurance about the Fridge trope. I really like your twist idea. I'm going to have to "borrow" that.
