O is for The Order

Released in 2003, The Order is a mystery horror film starring Heath Ledger. It also reunites him with some of his A Knight's Tale co-stars, namely Mark Addy and Shannyn Sossamon.  The movie centers around a disillusioned priest named Alex Bernier, played by Ledger, who goes to Rome to investigate the death of his mentor.  Both were members of fictitious religious order called the Carolingians, that specialized in fighting demons. The movie brings him into conflict with an immortal sin-eater, who wishes to make Alex his successor.

The movie was almost universally panned by critics. Despite this I really liked it. I dig occult mystery flicks and Heath Ledger is probably my all time favorite actor (plus it was cool to see him in a movie with his former A Knight's Tale costars). While this movie isn't for everyone, I  personally recommend it. If you like occult mysteries (or Heath Ledger) you're not going to lose anything by watching it.

World of Darkness Stats

Alex Bernier

Description: Alex Bernier is a former priest and demon hunter. Since his transformation into a sin-eater, Alex wanders the world, using the ability for good. Unlike his predecessor, who used the power to accumulate great wealth, Alex is willing to allow evil doers to die so that they may face their punishment. He has been known to work along side Hunters, as his vast occult knowledge is quite useful.

  1. This sounds like a great movie, I'll have to check it out! I've often found that the movies that get poor reviews from the critics are ones that I love (and usually the ones with rave reviews stink!)

  2. Thank you for the review. I haven't seen this movie and I do like Heath Ledger. I'm trying to watch more suspense/mystery type movies in hope that it will help me learn how to build more suspense in my writing.Simply Sarah
