October Horror Challenge - Clayface (2026)

 Synopsis

Matt Hagen is an up and coming actor from Gotham who's life is destroyed when he sleeps with the wrong woman. When an experimental treatment seems like a miracle cure, Matt's trauma soon proves that it's actually a curse.

Review

I didn't know I need a DC body horror/psychological thriller, but I'm glad James Watkins (with writing from Mike Flanagan and Hosssein Amini) gave us one. The greatest strength of this film are the performances of Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie. I don't know that I've really seen either in anything else, but I'm looking forward to seeing more of their performances.

Tom Rhys Harries plans Matt Hagan. He's a vulnerable, handsome, and charismatic lead. Hagan is a truly likable lead. Yeah, his downfall might have been because of a moment of pride, but he's a good man that didn't deserve what happened to him. The characters trauma and fall are truly heartbreaking. His obsession with getting his life back is understandable. Even as the bodies start piling up, honestly you don't really judge him for what he does. Of course evil leads to more evils, so by the end Hagan has a broken his psyche.

Naomi Ackie's Dr Caitlyn Corr is the other big standout. Her nano-treatment is the catalyst for Hagen's transformation into Clayface. She's a dedicated scientist that created a treatment to change the world for the better. She's persuaded by Matt's tragic story and decides to help him. While comments are made about her bluntness, she's a charming character and her relationship with Matt grows.

There are some nice nods to the great DC universe in the film. The two that really stuck out to me are in-universe movies. The first is One Bad Day and the second is No Man's Land. Both are iconic Batman stories. Coast City also appears, appearing to be the Hollywood of DC.

As far as horror goes, in general this doesn't do too many new things. We've seen some twisted transformations in the past and this doesn't really tread new ground. There's some nice ick though. in particular the air place scene is pretty jarring. I know I downplayed the body horror, but this is the most frightening version of Clayface I've seen. The character's flesh is malleable clay right? Not in this movie. It's (nano-cell infused and cloned) flesh. Finally, the director definitely has visuals that homage the French classic Les Yeux Sans Visage.

I thoroughly enjoyed Clayface. I genuinely cared about the characters, the visuals were great, and the movie is a great stand alone tale.

Music Monday - Crash

I loved Wayne Static and Static-X when I was in high school and college. Sadly Wayne passed away a decade or so ago. This past week we got a new music release and music video featuring the man (and no it's not AI). I remember the song Crash from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. A Batman themed music video was shot, but never released, until now. Some bits of the music have been recorded/changed and the video has been given a 4K remaster.

Clayface Teaser

James Gunn said the Clayface movie was going to be more like a horror flick. Based on this initial teaser it will be. The music just fits perfectly with the images to create something truly unnerving.

I Am Gotham's Reckoning

I probably shouldn't be into the femme Bane piece by manga artist, Yashiro Manabu, as much as I am, but damn do I love a muscle mommy.

Bob, Gun.

I've talked about my love for Bob in the past. This week I found a new Bob action figure and had to grab it. Technically the figure is Joker Goon, but Bob is the main goon featured. I've already statted him out for three systems, but DCC isn't one of them. Since DCC supers is one of my current focuses, I figured that should change today.

Bob the Goon: Init +2; Atk +d6+2 pistol (1d6+1) or +d6 combat knife (1d6+1) or +d6 unarmed (1d4+1); Crit IV/1d20; AC 12; HD 4d10+4; HP 30; Mov. 30'; Act 1d20; SQ Mighty Deeds, threat range 19-20 (16-20 if target is laughing);  SV Ref +4; Fort +3, Will +1; AL C

Pathetic

Here’s another anti-I.C.E. piece I found. This time we get DCAU Batman expressing his thoughts. The piece was created by Jordan Gibson.

Happy Birthday, Eric!

Today is Eric Bloat’s birthday. Since he’s my favorite Batman fan, I thought it would be fun stat up Birthday Boy, the first costumed villain faced by Batman Earth One. Wish Eric a happy birthday and make it extra special by grabbing one of his games from the Bloat Games shop or DriveThruRPG.

Birthday Boy: Init +2; Atk +d6 serial killer knife (1d8+3); Crit G/1d20; AC 14; HD 4d8+12; HP 32; Mov. 30'; Act 1d20; SP +3 to sneak silently and hide in shadows (as thief), critical threat range: 19-20; SV Ref +2; Fort +4; Will +2; Path C

October Horror Movie Challenge - Helloween (2025)

Synopsis
During Halloween 1997 young Carl Cane commits several grisly murders. He is locked in a maximum psychiatrics institute.  Jump forward to the present and a series of progressively more hostile clown sightings lead an investigator to believe that somehow Cane is involved.

Review
I would describe Helloween as a British horror flick about the Joker (he even has a Batman: The Animated Series Joker laugh) with a dash of Halloween, IT, and The Purge thrown in. Despite being derivative of several existing franchises, Helloween is a fun mix of them all. When I initially saw the trailer I was expecting British Terrifier. That's really not what this is. Cane monologues several times and is not the silent menace Art is. Additionally while there are deaths and blood in this one, it's no where near as graphic as Terrifier. It's actually subtle at times, which I appreciated. I recommend this one, especially to Batman fans. The film sets up sequels and I hope it was popular enough that they happen.

In Your Game
I don't think any knew stats need to be made based on this one. However, I do think you can definitely steal the idea. If you want to add a Joker to your supers game without actually using the Joker, Cane would be a perfect stand-in.

Music Monday - The Laugh Track

One of my favorite bands, Ice Nine Kills, is known for their cinematic videos (which feature an ongoing story) and horror based tracks. Recently they've shifted towards non-horror flicks. Their previous track, The Great Unknown, is inspired by The Matrix. Last week they dropped a video inspired by the Batman '89 version of the Joker. The song itself is a banger and the video is pretty awesome too. My favorite part of the song itself is how Spencer and crew worked in a bit of Tim Burton's Batman theme and a melody from Batman: The Animated Series
.

Who Wants Some Flavor?

Like I said in my Clownhunter post, I thought it would be fun to do some DCC Batman posts. Today I have a really silly one. While he was just a brainwashed comedian when first introduced, Condiment King is now a "legit" comic book villain. Interesting fact, he's also the favorite villain of current live action Batman, Robert Pattinson. You can read more about that here.

Condiment King: Init +1; Atk +2 condiment gun (see below) or +1 unarmed (1d2); Crit I/1d6; AC 12 (padded suit, dex); HD 2d6; HP 10; Mov. 30'; Act 1d20; SP condiment guns; SV Ref +2; Fort +0; Will +1; AL C

Condiment guns: Essentially condiment squirt guns these missile weapons fire ketchup and mustard. In addition to staining clothing, they can be used to create a slippery battlefield or distract. Additionally the first time a character is hit by one that have a 1 in 100 chance of being allergic to one of the condiments. Allergic characters must make a Fortitude save (DC 10) or go into anaphylactic shock.

The Cenobite Who Laughs

This piece by noble_nightmare is perfect. The Batman Who Laughs does resemble a Cenobite. I hadn’t really thought about it before.

I'm Clownhunter. Sorry That Sucks For You.

I thought it would be fun to stat some Batman related content for DCC. I'm going to start with one of the more recent Gotham vigilantes, Clownhunter. I've already given him Vigilante City stats, so this time he's getting the True Vigilante treatment.

If you aren't familiar with Bao Pham (aka Clownhunter), he's a young vigilante from Gotham. His family was killed by the Joker and his goons and he started mercilessly hunting and killing the Joker's goons because he felt Batman's ways were too soft.

Clownhunter (2nd level Dark Avenger): Init +2; Atk +d2 batarang bat (1d6+1); Crit III/1d12; AC 12 (helmet and pads, dex); HD 2d10; HP 14; Mov. 30'; Act 1d20; SP clown hunter, interrogation/intimidation, stealth, mighty deeds, unarmed; SV Ref +3; Fort +1; Will +2; AL N

Clown hunter: Due to Clownhunter's intense hatred of the Joker and his followers, his attacks against Joker, his followers, or any clown based character deal and extra 1d2 damage. He also receives a bonus equal to his level in rolls related to tracking clowns.

Interrogation/intimidation: Clownhunter is an expert at extracting information in unorthodox ways, particularly information targets aren't willing to part with.

Stealth: Clownhunter can Sneak Silently +7 and Hide in Shadows +5 as a Thief.

Unarmed: Clownhunter's fists do 1d4+STR mod and his kicks do 1d6 + STR mod damage.

The Real Reason Batman Has Never Killed The Joker…

I've shared content from The Panda Redd before. He has some insightful posts about (primarily Batman) comics. He also does some really funny skits. I really like this Under The Red Hood inspired one.

So is the Joker a cryptid? 😜

I've posted quite a bit of Batman related game content through the years. Check out my Gotham City Knights tag if you want to check it out.

    SKEEEEEE!

Yesterday Brutorz Bill of Green Skeleton Gaming Guild commented on my 5e Man-Bat Commando stats and said I should do OSE ones. I agree so here they are. This is my first time doing OSE monster stats, so I hope they're alright. This monster's background was inspired by their origin as creations of Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins.

    Man-Bat, Commando
Created by druidic zealots altered by an alchemical formula, these humanoid bats are the elite warriors and assassins for an order of militant druids.
