A Nephilim Question

On my drive back home for New Year's I decided that for me 2017 is going to be the Year of the Nephilim. I've had love for nephilim in mythology and other fiction since I was a teenager. WanderingNephilim is one of my most common online handles (next to Punluvin) and this blog is Halls of the Nephilim after all. I'm going to get this started by making a nephilim class for Swords & Wizardry. I have two different ideas for the class.

Option A: Nephilim are often depicted giants in literature. I picture the class being very strong, having lots of hit points and things, but also being slow and having the disadvantage of being very hard to be equipped due to their large size. The class will be for humans only.

Option B: This is more of the modern half-angel (think the Shadow Hunters/Mortal Instruments stuff). I'm thinking second tier fighter with some divine angel-esque abilities (sort of an angel-themed paladin). Unlike option A, this version of the class might be open to non-humans.

Given these two options, which would you prefer to see?

  1. A few years back I created a “Nephil” Class for Castles & Crusades that you may want to take a look at. Basically, I went with the Jewish legends as closely as possible. The Nephilim are very tall, strong, and tough, but emotionally unstable and prone to megalomania. Angels hate them, to the point where Nephilim cannot be healed by Lawful Good Clerics or Paladins.

    3. Thanks! I'd like to see how you handle the idea for S&W. Of the options you've presented, I'll vote "A".

  2. (1) Love the new header, and (2) why handle Nephilim as a class rather than a race that could (maybe) advance as different classes? Or is it sort of a template (from the mixing with "sons of God") that could be applied to different races...? (Not doubting the idea, btw, just wondering why you went that route.)

    1. Thank you. I was messing around with a few banners. I may see if I can do an alternating one.

If I was doing S&W White Box I'd definitely do a racial class. I decided to make it a class because of my perception of how things work for old school games (I think of templates as a new thing), again my perception not necessarily true. I didn't want it to be as simple as a race (because I think it might be overpowered). I'm still toying around with ideas and questions are good.

    2. Ah, a power level concern definitely makes sense. I'm interested in seeing how this turns out!
