Synopsis: An old west sheriff, his deputy, a gunslinger, and cowboy go on a undertake a mission to rescue townsfolk taken by savage cave dwellers.
The Good: This is my favourite western of the past decade. Everything about this movie is phenomenal! The set pieces are absolutely gorgeous. The entire cast does an outstanding job and there's some real character development. As I mentioned in a previous review of this movie, every western needs Kurt Russel. I propose that until he's taken from us, he's given at least a small role in every western. Matthew Fox plays a perfect, asshole that actually turns out to be a good guy. Richard Jenkins plays one of the best supporting characters that I've seen in a while. Patrick Wilson has a solid performance too. Oh and like Ravenous, David Arquette is in this one (along with horror genre icon, Sid Haig).
The Bad: In my opinion, there isn't anything bad about this movie. Now if you go into it expecting it to be a straight western or horror flick, you might be disappointed. It's predominantly a western, but there is some brutal horror too.
The Ugly: I've used the word once already, but this movie is seriously brutal at times. The troglodyte cave tribesman are just plain nasty.
In Your Game:
Troglodyte Tribesman
AC 7 [12] HD: 2+1 Attacks: Bone Tomahawk (1d6 damage, melee or range 10') Move: 12
The tribesman communicate with whistles embedded in their windpipes. Only males are encountered outside of their caves as the females are blinded and have their limbs amputated when they come of child-bearing age. Once per combat, instead of attacking they can release a frightening roar through their throat-whistles. Any opponent hearing this must make a saving throw or be unable to act their next turn.
