Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride Review

Full Disclaimer: Levi and I have become friends recently and he kindly shared the pdf Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride with me.

Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride is grindhouse style, 60+ page,  5th edition adventure for characters 5-7. In the adventure the characters enter an ancient evil temple in the heart of a cannibal-filled jungle for gold and glory. If you're a movie fanatic this adventure is going to check all the boxes for you. It's starts with a disclaimer:

DISCLAIMER! To avoid fainting, keep repeating "It's only a module.... it's only a module..."

This adventure has style in spades.  The artwork is hazy at times and seems like lost in time, which is definitely appropriate. The cartography is fantastic too. I particularly love the pieces by Karl Stjernberg. If you want to see more of his style, check out Spores of the Sad Shroom. The pdf is crisp and easy to read and the author, Levi, spends a few pages talking about the mood and how to create the right atmosphere. The module definitely places of movies like Green Inferno and Cannibal Holocaust. Actually the game is presented in "Cannibalvision." The are several tropes this adventure plays on. These definitely aren't politically correct, but it's not the author's intention to paint all jungle dwelling indigenous people as sadistic cannibals. He's just playing on a movie trope. If you think your party will have an issue, just change them to orcs or even elves and that might satisfy them.

The temple, itself, is three levels and has 32 rooms/encounter areas. Each one has it's own vibe. The names sound like movie titles and beneath there are descriptive tag lines! The encounters are filled with all sorts of unique traps and foes, one of my favorites being a school of undead piranha and the titular Mummy Bride.

There are also expansions for the module in the tome. A fully fleshed out cannibal village (pun totally intended) with random encounters is present. In addition several smaller satellite temples are included. In addition several shorter locations/groups/encounters/hazards are presented. These really bring jungle hell to life! There are a few appendices. The first details three pages of new cannibal magic items. This is followed by several pages of new monsters and foes features in the adventure.

The book ends with a waiver so that Planet X Games isn't responsible for any fate that may befall characters.

If you can't tell by the tone of this review, I LOVED this adventure. It was so well written and engaging that I read through it in a day. I'm not sure when I'll get to use it, but I most definitely will. If this is any indication of what Levi and Planet X Games is capable of, then they're a publisher to keep your eye on. Remember, they have a new Kickstarter dropping Friday.

A print on demand version of Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride is coming soon. Until then you can buy the pdf here.

  1. Sounds brilliant. Although I doubt I'll run 5e, this sounds like something I need to check out ;)
