While originally I planned on all of the films I'm watching for the challenge to be viewable for free on via Tubi, it seemed like a waste to not write something up about the other horror flicks I've watched. This one isn't on Tubi.
Don Wallace is a normal British teen who's accepted into a prestigious academy named Slaughterhouse. The academy's history goes all the way back to the middle ages and it's a breeding ground for the world's elite. It also has some pretty psychotic rules and traditions. When the current headmaster makes a deal with a fracking company, horrors of the academy's past are unleashed.
This movie tries to sell itself on having Nick Frost, Michael Sheen, and Simon Pegg in the cast. Like many B movies, they're in the movie, but not the focus. Don (played by Finn Cole) and his roommate Willoughby (played by Asa Butterfield) are the real stars. Finn does a good job as the fish out of water and Asa is great as the sarcastic and all-knowing Slaughterhouse guide. Honestly most of the student characters do a nice job of being interesting characters. As far as the adults go, Sheen's headmaster is super slimy, Pegg's professor is ineffectual, and Nick Frost's eco-stoner just feels like shades of his past characters.
I'd say this movie is a 3 out of 5 for me. There are some good ideas, that aren't executed in the best ways. Also, to be honest, I think it tried to do too much in a movie. Honestly, this would make a great series, but kind of falls flat as a movie. The idea that a sinkhole unleashes monsters or a portal to Hell (as Nick Frost's character proposes) is a great idea for a Buffy game. There are still entertaining scenes and some fun performances, so it's worth a watch.
