Romero zombies would be a fun addition to a 5e campaign. Perhaps the virus is a magical creationby the Chaos Cultists from Keep on the Borderlands!
I've talked about his blog before and I still recommend fallowing it. He does a great job of taking horror monsters and converting them to 5e. He now has a Patreon and for 5 dollars a month you get access to his ever expanding Horror Monster Manual.
Personally, I just eat stuff like this up.
