No Heroine Review

 

No Heroine is a three part comic miniseries written by Frank Gogal and illustrated by Criss Madd. It was published by Source Point Press. I learned about the series from my friend Odle, who's online friends with the author. 

The miniseries focuses on Kayla Vasquez, a recovering addict who lives in a world where vampires, werewolves, and other monsters are real. The first issue focuses on Kayla's attempt to save her friend from vampires. The second issue sees Kayla befriend a woman beaten by her partner and taking on a werewolf. The final issue sees her taking on a demon and her own choices. It's never discussed if the existence of the supernatural is common knowledge or if Kayla just knows about it because she's been on the streets. Until shown otherwise, I will believe the latter.

The story does a good job of addressing trauma and how it affects us. Kayla's journey isn't a happy one, but it is ultimately a hopeful one. The interior art reminds me of the style that was common in the late 90's. It's definitely not for everyone, but I liked it. 

If you are a fan of Buffy, then this is a book for you. Personally, I loved it. Check out your friendly neighborhood comic shop to copies for yourself. If they don't have them ask them to order them. 

In Your Game: Though I've mentioned the game in a few posts, this will be my first actual Cinematic Unisystem stats post in a little over three years. Those posts were the focus of this blog for years, so that's crazy to me. 

Kayla definitely knows how to hold her own, so I'm statting her as a Hero, rather than a White Hat. I know there is no mention of her having a mystic calling, but I'm going to stat her as a Slayer.
