A former criminal named John Milton escapes Hell to save his granddaughter from being sacrificed in a satanic ritual.
Review
I avoided this movie until now. It was released during the time Cage was making nothing bombs. After watching it, I'm sad that the case. This movie is batshit crazy in all the right ways. It's not perfect, it has some terrible CGI designed for 3d effects and the Cage's acting is not great. It doesn't have to be though. This is a grindhouse movie through and through. It revels in the sleaze. Also the soundtrack is just as batshit awesome as the rest of the film.
Cage's Milton is just so deadpan. His accent is a toned down version of Cameron Poe from Con Air. His character just doesn't give a fuck. He shoots, kills, and fucks without abandon. He literally does all three at the same time. There's a literal gunfight that happens while he's fucking a waitress.
William Fichtner is perfect as the Accountant. He's an arrogant prick of a demon that serves as Satan's assistant. He's an antagonist, but not one without reason. Honestly, I like the character so much, I might add a version of him to most of my supernatural games. Fichtner is perfect in the role. He always plays slimy and arrogant perfectly.
Billy Burke does a great job as the apocalyptic cult leader, Jonah King. I'm a fan of Burke and it's cool to see him play a important role in a story. David Morse and Tom Atkins play great supporting characters as always. I don't like Amber Heard as a person, but she's great eye candy and plays a good supporting character.
In Your Game
Great to see this bonkers movie still getting some love. Here's my old review, but I failed to conjure up some wonderful gaming content!
ReplyDeleteThis is hands-down one of our favorite films, full of creamy grindhouse goodness. I hold out hope for a sequel... not likely though it is. Agree with your review 100%. Glad to see someone else appreciates "Drive Angry".
