Carbide City #2 (Signal Boost)

Y'all, Carbide City #2 is in it's last week and still needs around 1500 to reach its funding goal. You can find the project here. This expands the first volume, which was an excellent combination of my favorite genre (supers) and my favorite system (5e). The $65 print and pdf 5Evo bundle is a great deal if you need to catch up on the series and want to expand your 5e games to multiple genres. You can read my reviews of all the books in the bundle by checking out the links below.

The cats at Limitless Adventures are really cool and this is a project that needs to see the light of day. Also, if you'd like to expand the 5e content presented in Carbide City #1 and #2, you can check out my 5e Supers tag. I'm also thinking about doing a no frills 5e supers zine that can be used to supplement Carbide City and other 5e takes on supers.

Strahd Loves, Man Kills Issue 1

Strahd Loves, Man Kills is a brilliantly named 5e Ravenloft fanzine by Dolorous Exhumation Press. The first issues focuses on witchcraft, hags, and other bits of folk horror. There are several features, all of which are pretty cool.

The zine starts with Lurid Locations. The location presented in this issue is Strega Hollow. This holler is designed to be placed in a remote section of Tepest. It's a mining town ruled by a hag family that openly worship the devil, Asmodeus. The area has a magical bog that heals... at a cost. Additionally a few npcs (with motivations) and adventure hooks are presented.

Baleful Backgrounds presents new character backgrounds. Like all 5e backgrounds, they have skill/tool proficiencies, starting equipment, a feature, and personality traits/ideals/bonds/flaws. The first is the Country Squire. These are landed gentry that have lived a life associated with privilege. The second is the Cut-Wife. These are midwives and herbalist that provide unconventional medicine in rural communities.

Seeds of Evil presents a horror based adventure seed. This issue includes The Thing In Elbert's Parlor. The hook is that a character's uncle has a new acquisition, a mummy from Hark'Akir.

Cryptic Alliances are new cults and organizations that dwell in the dark realms. The Cult of the Rotmaiden is a group of nihilistic druids that worship Zuggtmoy, the Demon Queen of Fungi. It's members have been abused by those in power and seek revenge on the powerful. While they are definitely evil, there are sympathetic aspects to the organization and its members.

Tragic Heroes gives brief outlines for character ideas. They present the concept and then give suggested builds. The focus of this issue is troubled troubadours. While I think all five of the presented concepts are good, the Crossroads Nightingale is my favorite. Like Robert Johnson, this soul sold their soul to the infernal at the crossroads to become a maestro.

Random Ruin presents a random tables to help you name your campaign. Finally Forbidden Tomes presents a collection of inspirational folk horror.

This is a great zine. It's not flashy and feels like a throwback. I really like that aspect of it. If you're a fan of Ravenloft, it's definitely worth picking up a copy. Issue 2 dropped this week. I ordered my copy and will do a review of it as soon as it comes in.

Bloody Theater Review

Bloody Theater is a 16 page full color 5e zine by Fey Light Studios.  The zine contains a district map, two encounter tables, and a list of establishments found within. The Animus Playhouse was created by a retired adventure. It is one of the four factions detailed in the zine. The second faction is antagonist to them. This is a group of vampires led by Thorne Astric, a 300 year old vampire with a score to settle with the owner of the Animus. Additionally you have the Shifting Hand Gang, a local gang of cutpurses, the City Watch, and the Brokenwing Clan. This final faction are a group of kobolds left over from a dragon's attempt to take over the city. They now mostly work as public servants. Each faction has a few members listed.
Additionally there are several stat blocks. Enforcers are tough criminals that use violence to get the message across. Fatbergs are animated oozes lurking in the sewers. They are disgusting bits of trash, fats, and random magics. Fledgling Vampires are somewhere between regular vamps and vampire spawn. Gregor is the second in command of the Shifting Hands. Necrothralls are humanoid servants of powerful undead, warped by necromancy. Night Hounds are feral dogs that serve urban vampires, just like wolves serve  other vampires. A new weapon, the kukri, is detailed, as is a cursed magical variant. Finally since there is a casino in the theater district, three gambling games are presented with rules.

This is a fun zine. It doesn't have a lot of art, but doesn't really need it. If you want to add some culture and intrigue to your urban adventures. This is a great supplement to do so. The district would plug into Waterdeep or Baldur's Gate easily. It could also be in any City in Exandria or on Eberron. You can get your copy here from Exalted Funeral. You can also support future Fey Light Studios zines by supporting them on Patreon.

Music Monday - Fall of Troi

Apparently the designers if PUBG are big INK fans too. That’s why they let them play an early version of the next iteration of Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds. I don’t know anything about the story but this video is great and I love the track.

Carbide City #2 Is Live On Kickstarter

Limitless Adventures is returning to Carbide City. I love Carbide City. The 5Evo take on supers, while a bit limiting in character creation, plays will to classic supers tropes and uses my favorite system (5e). Check out my review of Carbide City #1 here, to learn more about this approach.

The new Carbide City book starts with a comic which will lead into an adventure (like the first book). It also includes 15 Carbide City locations and 45 adventure hooks. The city is also fleshed out with heroes, npcs, and villains. The 10 original archetypes are joined by 6 new in this book. Rules are expanded for taking Evos (heroes) to a higher power level. Additionally all 16 archetypes are given additional advancements.

If you like 5e and supers, you should definitely back Carbide City #2. One of the pledge options includes all 5Evo books and if you don't have the others, this is the tier to go for. I love every single one of them and they are worth the asking price.

Mork Borg

Mork Borg ( for "Dark Fort") is one of those games I avoided because of the hype. I thought the game looked original and stylish as Hell, but I guess I felt it was too metal for me. Maybe it is more metal than I normally dig, but damn is is awesome!

The game is absolutely gorgeous. If I remember correctly the art is all public domain stuff that's been modified to look like it belongs on a doom metal album cover. While there is great substance in the tome, this one is definitely focused on style. There are some great design choice. Like Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Mork Borg uses the inside covers to present useful rules and classic OSR random charts. There's also a really feature of the book. Keep the book in light and then put in a dark room and look at the spine.

The setting of Mork Borg is a dying world. The end times are coming. It's not a clearly defined world, but that works. There's so much here to use to build your version of this dying land. The book contains all the rules you need to play the game. It also includes an interesting adventure that gives a great ash-filled taste of the game.

I could go on and on about how cool this game is, but I won't. If  you want a better true review of the game, check out Questing Beast's video. Get your own copy here.

Tome of Debasement

The Tome of Debasement is a DCC zine from Breaker Press Games. This vile tome is details Herlezzect the Debased God. This lord of deceit, corruption, death, and decay is the bane of the sane and just. The zine allows judges to outfit these dark clerics with unique and depraved abilities. Herlezzect's clerics heal via a bloodletting ritual, rather than laying on hands like classic DCC clerics. This power/spell is detailed. The titles of his clerics are deal with decay and corruption. A unique disapproval chart is provided those that displease their dark master. Herlezzect's clerics are given three unique powers. Scuttle Sight allows clerics to see through the eyes of and potentially summon and control vermin. Hand of Corruption and Decay allows them to call on the power of their god to damage and physically corrupt their foes. Worm Tunnel summons a horrific spectral worm that can travel through dimensions. Several dark spells utilized by dark clerics are included. These are Deceiving Visage, Putrescent Bog, Rotting Stench, Halo of Flies, Lash, Twisted Form, Radiant Corruption, and Uncontrollable Urge. The book ends with new magic items, the Eyes of Corruption, magic gems that radiate with Herlezzect's power.

I recommend this zine to any judge that wants to create some unique and particularly nasty villains for their game. The spells are flavorful and the zine is full of content. The artwork is gross and appropriate. You can grab your own copy here.

Join the Midnight Hunt

I’ve talked about my love the Magic the Gathering’s plane known as Innistrad. It’s full of gothic horror and is very Ravenloft-esque. You can use Planeshift: Innistrad to take your 5e game to the realm. The prerelease for the next MTG set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt is tomorrow. The cinematic trailer for it came out today and I wanted to share it.

Music Monday - Rainy Day

My favorite band, Ice Nine Kills, is back. Rainy Day is a Resident Evil inspired track that follows the story started in Hip to Be Scared and followed by Assault and Batteries. The video features a cameo by zombified version of New Year's Day's Ash Costello

The metaplot continues in this video.
