No long winded answer to this one. I started playing rpg's because I had a big imagination, it allowed me to pretend I was something I wasn't, and it was fun. That's still mostly true. I have a big imagination and it's fun. I still play because it lets me pretend I'm someone I'm not, but I don't do it for quite the same reason. I always played elves back in the day. The reason was they were beautiful and graceful, whereas I am a fat guy that over the years has had self-esteem issues. I am more comfortable in my skin, but its still fun to pretend I'm someone else for a while.
