The Batman Who Laughs '66

Check out this fun Batman '66 version of the Batman Who Laughs by Butcher Billy.

And remember, if you want to unleash the regular version on your 5e game, I've got you covered with this post.

Alien 2233

The other day I posted about the Screamers Alien RPG content over at the RPG Marshal Blog. Today I wanted to share their mashup of Alien and the Metro franchise. It consists of three video games (four if you count the remastered release of the first two) and a series of short stories, novellas, and novels all taking place primarily in post-apocalyptic Russia. In the video games, characters play as rangers, living in settlements in the Moscow Metro, which survived the nuclear apocalypse. They must scavenge supplies, keep morale in their communities up, and evade hostile mutants.

Alien 2233 is a combines the settings. The premise is that Earth was nuked after a Weyland-Yutani spaceship crashed. Just a few thousand people survived, by taking refuge in the metro tunnels beneath Moscow. Unfortunately for them Xenomorphs have also made it to the ruins of Moscow and are now hunter humanity.

The free pdf is nine pages. The first page contains information about each franchise and then how to make them crossover. There are a few pages which include a map of the metro, brief descriptions of the various stations, discussion of the New UPP, and a new synthetic variation, the comrade. There are four pages of Xenomorph lore, which includes 5 new types (with stats).

  • Xenobat - flying death from above
  • Xenoshark - found in flooded sections of the Metro and rivers
  • Xenogorilla - what's more frightening than a Xenomorph... one that can overturn a car or bust through a wall
  • Xenorex - an alpha xenomorph and terrifying sight
  • Xenopsy - these xenomorphs have mutated because of their exposure to radiation and humanity and taken on human characteristics. They also have psychic abilities.
There is a page that discusses equipment and basically just gives equivalents between the Metro games and the Alien RPG. Finally there are 5 different adventure hooks.

Overall I have to say this is a nice little mashup. You can do an alternate take on the Alien RPG and use it as your setting. You could so just divorce it from Earth and use the idea for a colony world. If nothing out you have some horrifying xenomorph variants  you can lift.

Screamers

Screamers is a sci-fi horror flick released in 1995. Like a lot of science fiction flicks, it's based on a story by Philip K. Dick.  The movie stars Peter Weller and focuses on killer machines on a ruined world. Paranoia is a big component of the story and their are a variety of Screamers. There was a straight to DVD sequel released in 2009 called Screamers: The Hunting. I've watched it and definitely don't recommend it, unless you just have to consume all media. The only notable thing is it features a pre-Arrow Stephen Amell.

While look for fan material for the Alien RPG I found a cool pdf that discussed incorporating Screamers into the game. You can find the original post here on the RPGMarshal blog. The pdf discusses two different ways to add Screamers to your Alien game. Additionally the story's factions, the NEB and UPP are presented. The pdf then presents a page of general rules for Screamers and then a one page write up for Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 (with mention of Type 3-b), and finally Type 4. If you play the Alien RPG or any other Year Zero Engine game you should check out the pdf.

The Diner

The Diner is a collection of five gruesome scenarios for Horror: A Roleplaying Game. Let me just say, that even if I hadn't bought the rule system, I planned on picking up this horrific beauty.  The covers are fantastic and Rick Hershey of Fat Goblin Games outdid himself. It really has that video nasty VHS vibes and the coffee ring on the cover is a nice touch. The interior art is just as good.

The book begins with four pages of universal content about the titular diner aka The Last Stop Diner. There is a map included and a QR code to scan if you want to get a copy of the map for players. This is followed by a page of new stuff/equipment. We are presented a list of weapons found at the diner as well as weapon stats for hot liquids and gear stats for fire extinguishers and shitty weed. This is followed by a few pages of scenario rules. It basically lets you know what to expect. Each scenario has a set-up, three acts, an epilogue, discussion of using it in Franchise Mode, and relevant stats. Each act includes several action/rpg bits and lets you know relevant dice rolls and such. There is also a critical injuries for monsters table.

The first scenario is Mind Eaters. This scenario focuses on aliens and paranoia. The titular mind eater has possessed one or more patrons and a group of alien bounty hunters have staged situation to capture their prey. The Mind Eater get stats, as do the two alien bounty hunters, and their special gear.

The second scenario is The Night Shift. A vampire-like creature feeds in the diner and has a minion and hypnosis to cover things up. This crimson abomination and his zombie servant is statted out.

The third scenario is Eight-Legged Pandemic and definitely isn't for arachnophobes. Space spiders rain down from the sky. Their bite is venomous and can even turn victims into spider hybrids. There are stats for swarms, hybrids, and giant versions.

The fourth scenario is Demonomicon. A band called Gibbering Mouther has been using a sinister tome as a prop and accidently unleash a demon on the diner. The Demonic Entity is given stats.

The final scenario is Slime. This adventure is essentially the Blob at a diner. The characters are quarantined and must survive. We are given stats US Army soldier, a colonel, and the titular slime.

There are 10 characters presented: a near retirement detective, employees of the Last Stop Diner, and the band Gibbering Mouther. Each character is given stats and personal agenda items. There are also extra personal agenda items secretly given to the mind eater possessed character and crimson abomination's servant instead.

This book rocks and I recommend it to anybody looking for some simple to run horror adventures. Honestly with a little work, you could use them in any system, though as I mentioned before Horror: A Roleplaying Game is a simple and concise system. You can grab your own copy of The Diner from DMDave Publishing's online store. The pdf is 17 and the print copy is 22.

I was told this is the first in a line of one shot books like this. The first, The Gas Station, is nearly complete. It will be followed by The Sherriff's Office.

Origins 2023 Recap

I had an excellent time at Origins this year. Figured I'd do a recap with pictures.

I ran 8 four hour sessions with Lurking Fears. These cats are amazing. They're friendly and just all around amazing GM's. Initially known for running Call of Cthuthlu, the group has expanded and we run games for several publishers including Chaosium, Wet Ink Games, Free League, Bloat Games, Mongoose Publishing and a few others. We also let our players vote for session MVP's which allows them to pick some great prizes donated by our sponsors. We are also an open and inclusive group.

I ran six different adventures over the course of the con (using 5 different systems). My Wasted session was awesome. The group had a blast even if one was turned into a moonshine drinking zombie. The Arwhich Grinder is always a blast. I had folks that played in my session last year bring it up when the say me. A few folks in my session were from (near) back home, which was cool. They even got my email address and stuff so they could look for my games next year. I didn't run my planned Dark Places and Demogorgons adventure (because I'm bad and haven't finished it), but I did run two session of the upcoming DP&D OSE adventure Yer Gonna Need A Bigger Boat. Both groups had a lot of fun and one of them fell in love with the game, which is really why we run things. I also ran two sessions of a new to me game, Necrobiotic. It's a fascinating game that I don't think I can do justice here. Check out the games page and expect a review in the future. I was gifted a physical copy of the book and am looking forward to diving into it. I ran one session of Survive This!! Zombies! 2nd Edition. I used the old All Flesh Must Be Eaten adventure, Coffee Break of the Living Dead. I had an amazing group that come up with some great tactics I'd never seen before. My final session was Valor Knights: Chaos at the Hooper Dam. Going to be honest, it wasn't good. I didn't remember the rules as well as I thought I did and got my times confused and ended the session early. Most of the players still seemed to have a good time, but it was definitely the black mark on my gaming record (and the surveys we do show that).

Honestly, the highlight of the convention is always seeing friends that I normally only get to see at places like Origins. My Lurking Fears fam is amazing, but I also got to hang out with Matt and Brandon from Wet Ink Games, Dieter and Judge Jen from Goodman Games, and even had dinner with the two handsome gents from Limitless Adventures.

Speaking of Limitless Adventures, I had them sign my copy of Carbide City #1.

I had a pretty decent haul (and didn't spend nearly as much as the images make it look like).
  • Three smaller DCC releases from Breaker Press Games: two tri-fold encounters for their Stennard setting and a new class
  • The Hangman's Garden DCC monogram, honestly mainly just snagged it because my dude Dieter wrote it
  • A collection of amazing looking Magic the Gathering tokens from a local Columbus artist, Andrew Thompson
  • I snagged the last copy of the DCC Free RPG Day adventure thanks to Judge Jen.
  • Already talked about Horror: A Roleplaying Game and will review The Diner soon.
  • Snagged several Free RPG Day books, including Dragonbane, which I knew nothing about but am super stoked for and will be posting about soon.
  • The Horror at Fort Orc'igin is a 5e tournament style adventure by DMDave Publishing that was an Origins 2023 exclusive and (obviously) inspired by The Thing. I plan on reviewing it at some point.
  • Mork Corp was described by the author as the worst Mork Borg zine ever, so I got. When characters die they go to Mork Corps, an infernal company. There's content. It's funny. No Country For Old Kobolds was a free book I got for buying the zine. It's a Powered By The Apocalypse game I'm donating to the campus Nerd Club.
  • I love Pirate Borg. Grabbed a tri-fold navel encounter and a map/adventure for the system. Also snagged the 5e version of game's bestiary because I love 5e pirate stuff.

  • I've had the pdf of Teenage Mutant Dirtbags for a bit, but wanted it in print. I love TMNT and the game is simple and fun. Also got a preview of the Storypath Ultra from Studio 2 Publishing when I snagged it.
  • Had to get my Origins d6. Also grabbed the GoeyCube business card which is also a 5e item card.
  • Ultra Pro released some legendary dragon stat cards for Free RPG Day.
  • I know have two different Doug Shute trading cards. Doug is the US Free League Con guy and runs Victory Condition Gaming.
  • More Free RPG Day stuff. I love that there's a Transformers/GI Joe crossover adventure.
  • Finally I love patches and got the 2023 exclusive Vast Grimm patch.

So yeah, my Origins 2023 rocked. Can't wait for next year's!

Horror: A Roleplaying Game

Horror: A Roleplaying Game is a release from DMDave Publishing. It's a system neutral game that uses the Year Zero Engine srd from Fria Ligan AB. This means the game is compatible with Alien RPG, Twilight: 2000, Blade Runner RPG, Vaesen, and a majority of Free League's releases. The book is roughly 64 pages, counting SRD, index and character sheet. The game is divided into the following chapters: Introduction, Character Creation, Skills and Specialties, Combat and Damage, and Travel. This is strictly a rules tome and has no art.

As mentioned in the introduction the game is designed to be extremely adaptable for horror movie rpg experiences. The mechanics are simple, combat is quick and deadly, and there are rewards for pushing your luck. However, failure comes at a cost. The game focuses on players and the story. The game doesn't use a full set of polyhedrals, and a collection of 10-15 d6's are suggested. The game has two main modes: Flick Mode and Franchise Mode. Flick Mode is fast and brutal. Stakes are high and most (if not all) characters aren't expected to survive. Franchise Mode is designed for multiple sessions and characters have a greater chance of survival.

There is no character creation in Flick Mode. Characters are provided by the GM. In Franchise Mode players will create a character using seven steps. The most important step is picking your archetype. Each Archetype has key attributes, skills, and specialties tied to it. They also have a pesonal agenda for players to pick an option from, as well as a weakness, dark secret, and signature item they will do the same with. Finally there is a gear section. The archetypes presented are:

  • Ambitious Scientist
  • Brave Adventurer
  • Brawny Protector
  • Cynical Survivor
  • Devoted Caregiver
  • Enigmatic Artist
  • Fearless Youth
  • Seasoned Detective
The game has 12 core skills. Each is tied to an attribute. When you try to do something you roll a number of dice equal to your skills, attribute, and sometimes gear. Each dice type should be a different color. A six is a success and more successes mean better outcomes. You can push your luck, though in the end you can only attempt something once. Note even if you fail a role, the story is still pushed forward... the are just consequences. There are several specialties that affect skills in different ways.

As mentioned before, combat can be fast and deadly. Maps aren't required and things are set up in range zones. This is one of the more robust chapters. It deals with movement, attack, vehicles, chases, damage, and many other topics. One important feature of the Year Zero Engine is that character suffer both (physical) damage and stress.

The final chapter deals with travel, goes into driving vehicles a bit more, camping, and other survival mechanics.

This seems like a solid ruleset that I'd definitely love to dive in to. Right now there is one scenario collection book for the game, The Diner. I also picked it up and will be posting a review later today or tomorrow. If you are looking for a new horror rpg (especially one to do one shots with), I'd recommend picking this one up. You can get a physical copy of the rules for 9.99 and a digital copy for 4.99 from the DMDave Publishing online store.

One For All (Remastered)

Last week Divide Music released a remastered version of his All Might tribute track, One For All. All Might is such a great character and I'm going to be real, this track gives me chills.

Welcome To Planet Mofo

The latest release from Dolorous Exhumation Press (publisher of the fantastic Strahd Love, Man Kills zine) is Planet Motherfucker. This trashy post-apocalyptic zine is set in an alternate reality in which the nukes went off during 1965 (the Year of the Thunder Kiss) and reality was essentially turned in to a psychedelic grindhouse flick. If you couldn't tell, the game draws inspiration from the music of White Zombie/Rob Zombie. The previous edition was system neutral, but the newest is a hack that uses the third-party license for Mork Borg.

The zine is 48 pages and is a complete rules-lite game. We are presented with 7 pages of setting. This is followed by 6 pages of rules. After that is the coolest section; character archetypes. As with everything, they are inspired by Rob's music. Here are your options:
  • Church Burner
  • Face-Breaking Goon
  • Hellfire Preacher
  • Living Dead Hustler
  • Satanic Witch
  • Scumbag
  • Wastelander
While they are more durable and powerful that standard Mork Borg characters, there's still a good chance your characters are going to meet a wild end. Player's are recommended to give it their all and play their characters like they're stolen. We're then presented with a few pages of weapons, armor, and other things to buy. Like many OSR games there are some fun random tables too. There's a page on Black Magic and the Herectile Dysfunction that happens when you fuck it up. There are three pages of adventure ideas as well as a set of random tables to help create them. There are four pages of monsters and foes and two pages of sidekicks/followers. The zine ends with a d66 loot table and a page of recommended media to consume.

Planet Motherfucker is low brow trash. That's not a critique. It's a the best kind of lowbrow trash I think it sounds like a great game to sit around with friends and roll dice with. Add some tunes, brews, and grub and seems like the perfect time.  You can order your own copy here.

Thought I'd end the post by sharing my favorite White Zombie/Rob Zombie track.

Insert Nic Cage Meme

Nicolas Cage is getting his very own DC Comics variant cover. He will grace the variant of Batman/Superman: World's Finest #19.

Other Batman/Superman: World's Finest variant covers will include Jerry Seinfeld, Paul McCartney, and Jack White.

An Apex Magical Predator On Cocaine

Inspired Grant Howitt's Honey Heist the phenomenon that is Cocaine Bear, Cocaine Owlbear or Fantasy Woodland Cocaine Heist Crew is a wild one-shot game. You only have two stats (cocaine and woodland creature) and one mission (get that sweet magical nose candy). Not really going to review this one, because there's not much to review. You can grab Honey Heist and Cocaine Owlbear on itch.io for free (though it'd be pretty cool if you threw the creators a few gold pieces).

The Hunt Begins October 6

Kraven is one of my favorite Spidey villains. I think he can be a great antihero. I know Sony’s superhero outings have been a mixed bag, but I have high hopes for this one.

Music Monday - Learn To Fly

Gotta love some classic Foo Fighters, especially when the video features a young Tenacious D.

Music Monday - Dead Inside

Didn't think I'd ever see it actually happen, but Dead Island 2 has finally come out. I haven't got to check it out yet, but I'm pretty excited to do so. Until then, I'll just have to listen to this fun track from JT Music.

Do You Remember the Live Action Batman Between Clooney and Bale?

I do not remember these commercials, but this Collider article brought them to my attention and I thought they were cool. Actor Bruce Thomas, probably best known for his role as Stephen Trager on the show Kyle XY. Interestingly enough Thomas would also voice characters in Justice League, Beware the Batman, Batman: Bad Blood, and Batman: Hush. The commercials feature the Danny Elfman Batman music and Michael Gough reprising his role as Alfred. While they aren't played by their big screen counterparts, Vicky Vale, Joker, Penguin, and Riddler all make appearances.

More Comic Crawl Classics Resources

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I thought it would nice to highlight some comic book related DCC content in preparation for Comic Crawl Classics.

  • While the characters aren't superpowered, I think Gunzo! True Vigilante is an obvious resource. Eric put a lot of work into this one and it's great.
  • While it's a retro sci-fi setting, Leopard Women from Venus, is inspired by the comics of Fletcher Hanks. The titular Leopard Woman class would be fitting for a supers setting. Additionally, Stardust the Super Wizard and Fantomah are presented as patrons.
  • I've not reviewed it but Akashic Titan: Blue Bolt is an entire setting book based on Jack Kirby and Joe Simon's golden age Blue Bolt Comics. There's obvious tons of stuff you can pull from this.
  • If you want allies, bystanders, minions, and other foes for a comic book inspired DCC game, check out my April A-Z 2021 master post. It's a collection of npcs and such designed for True Vigilante.

The Last Boy On Earth

Because of the upcoming upcoming release of Comic Crawl Classics, I thought I'd share some comic related DCC content. The first bit that comes to mind is the Kamandi tribute by Sanctum Secorum.

I've shared this before, but the July 16th episode of Sanctum Secorum focused on Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth. The folks discuss the comic and then talk about statting creations. If you plan on playing a post apocalyptic campaign, they talk about great literature references and there's also a discussion about how to create props. You can find the accompanying DCC game stats that are available here for free.

Classes

  • Canine Scientist - inspired by Kamandi's friend Doctor Canus, these humanoid canine's have deeds of mighty intellect and can use and enhance items of technology
  • Earth A.D. Human - unlike Kamandi, most of the humans in Kamandi's world are devolved primitives, they have extra raw strength, can rage, and have limited use of Mighty Deeds of Arms
  • Hybrid - this class is designed to let players play of the humanoid animals, they gain different abilities depending on what animal they evolved from
  • Nu-Men - Based on Kamandi's friend Benjamin Boxer and the Nuclear People, they wear protective suits and have nuclear punches, they can also explode... I believe of the new classes, this is the one I'd want to try the most.
Monsters
  • Beast of Monster Lake - a lethal 30' tall crab creature found in Monster Lake
  • Zone Devil - in Kirby's world there are irradiated mutant insects from the Dominion of the Devils
Patrons
  • The Star Child - honestly, I'm not 100% on this patrons relation to the the comic, the patron is an ascended being and is connected to divine balance, in the comics the starchild Kamandi is told about is actually Superman.

Overall there is some fantastic content in this one. This is my preferred style of post post apocalypse. I think this is why I prefer the third party DCC setting of Umerica to the far future new stone age of Mutant Crawl Classics.

#Homefree

It looks like Amazon is gearing up for the next season of The Boys. Yesterday Vought International posted this video discussing an upcoming trial of Homelander.

This was followed up today with America's most trusted journalist, Cameron Coleman, pledging his support of Homelander.

A Spot On Write-Up

As I mentioned in my spoiler free review, I really liked Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.  It made the Spot pitiable, sympathetic, and monstrous. Meaghan Colleran from Bell of Lost Souls has done a great write-up of the character for 5e in this post. Check it out.

This piece by Milton Aguiar contains an all-star cast of Playstation characters.

Eye See You

Created by Forge or Valeria Richards (its never made clear) in the Marvel Zombies Resurrection series, this macabre firearm was created using the  head of Cyclops. It's almost as grisly as the Spine.

Cyclops Gun
Weapon, legendary
This horrific technorganic gun is extremely powerful and dangerous. Its grants its wielder +2 to hit and does 6d6 force damage. These optic blasts cannot be regenerated by Mr. Sinister and have no affect on certain members of the Summers' bloodline, such as Havok and Vulcan.

Kentucky Fried Crossovers

There have been four Comic Con exclusive KFC comics. The first tells the tale of Harland Sanders. I don't know much about it beyond that. It's the other three that I find interesting. In The Colonel of Two Worlds Sanders teems up with Flash and Hal Jordan to take on the Crime Syndicate Earth version of himself and the Flash's Rogues. In the Colonel Corps he and Flash use the Cosmic Treadmill to gather various versions of himself to collect his recipe (which he's forgotten). In the last issue his plan to get his chicken out to the cosmos is foiled by Larfleeze. If you want to learn more, which this great video from Casually Comics. At one point all three DC issues were available online. Unfortunately as of now only issue one is still available on Amazon Kindle.  Below I've created 5e stats for the Colonel. Also check out my Vigilante City version of him here.

Music Monday - You Will See Me

I love Scroobius Pip. This bezerkatwerk tribute is fun. The song is powerful. It also sort of feels like a supervillain explaining his motivations.

I will destroy everything that you hold dear
By simply destroying everything far and near
My footsteps will be impossible not to hear
I will watch you from afar and taste each tear

I will wipe out entire races
I will erase faces and displace with great haste and no graces
This world will become my plaything
Embracing my ways and then just breaking

I will burn this entire world to the ground
I will leave a mark greater than any have ever left before
I will lay waste by land, air and sea
And you will see me

And you. Will see. Me
