J is for Jackalope

Today's addition to the World of Darkness is much less frightening or malicious than previous entries, though it is still quite dangerous.

The jackalope is a creature of American folklore. First "encountered" in Wyoming in the early 19th century. Some legends claim that they're killer rabbit chimera, similar to the rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Other give them more siren-like qualities, claiming that they can mimic human speech, which can lead a well-meaning man to his death. Finally the milk from a female jackalope is said to have mystical properties. According to some legends you can lure them out by baiting a trap with whiskey.

While I'd heard of them before, my first real encounters with the creatures in literature or gaming was with the original weird west Deadlands game. This version of the jackalope caused horrible luck to those around it (though their feet could provide good to those lucky enough to slay the creatures).

World of Darkness Stats

Jackalope
Description: Jackalopes are a species of luck influencing chimera native to North America (particularly the midwest). While they aren't malicious, they tend to cause great misfortune when they come into contact with humans. While alive the creatures create a zone of bad luck. However, occultists have been known to turn jackalope paws into true lucky rabbit's feet.

Powers/Abilities
Bad Luck: An aura of ill fortune surrounds the jackalope. Any actions taken within the presence of a jackalope has a chance to be considered a dramatic failure. Any time a roll fails and a 1 is rolled, the action is considered a dramatic failure. Note dramatic failures normally only occur when a Chance Roll is taken.

Lucky Rabbit's Foot:  Through taxidermy and a few minor rituals (aka successful craft and occult rolls) a jackalope's foot can be turned into a true lucky rabbit's foot. Once per day, a character possessing the lucky foot can gain the benefit of 9's again on a single roll (determined before rolling).
