This is another flick I watched that isn't available on Tubi. I will get back into reviewing those movies soon.
Maggie moves with her mother back to her Mother's hometown in Ohio. She quickly makes makes some new friends. Trying to get booze, they convince, local vet tech, Sue Ann to buy beer for them. Sue Ann, who has a connection to some of the students' parents, begins inviting the kids over to her basement to party. Soon, Ma (as she becomes known) because quite popular with the student body. However, things eventually take a dark turn items come up missing and Ma's behavior becomes erratic.
The movie plays out in an interesting way. As Ma becomes more sinister, the audience is shown more flashbacks about how she became so twisted. While it in no way justifies her actions, her backstory is tragic and includes sexual assault (though the characters in the movie play it off as a prank). Octavia Spencer does a tremendous job as the villain. She can be both sympathetic and horrible in equal measures. Honestly, I found the premise of this movie really creepy. The reason is that I grew up in an area of Ohio where parents would throw parties and relive their "glory days" with their kids.
I wouldn't say this is a must watch, but if you like thriller/psychological horror flicks, it's entertaining.
In Your Game: A character like Ma makes a great surprise villain for a Dark Places & Demogorgons or Zombies! game.
