The Meteor Man (1993)

 Synopsis

Substitute teacher, Jefferson Reed, is a good, but ultimately cowardly, man and substitute teacher. His life is changed when he is hit by a glowing green meteorite. This imbues him with powers, including flight, super strength, invulnerability, and the ability to talk to dogs. Spurred on by his community, he begins to clean up his neighborhood.

Review

Though the movie came out in 93, last night I watched it for the first time. I've had my eye on this one for a while, but it's rather expensive. Luckily I picked up a copy for a dollar at a local record shop recently. I have to say, while some of the effects look really dated, even for the time (this is no MCU flick), this movie is a lot of fun. Instead of being a straight action movie, it's an action comedy. It has a stellar cast which is a who's who of African American actors. In addition to Robert Townsend, the movie has James Earl Jones, Eddie Griffin, Marla Gibbs, Sinbad, Robert Guillaume, and a young Don Cheadle. There are some great comedic moments in the movie. I believe my favorite is when Jefferson and the main villain (who temporarily gains the same powers), but absorb the knowledge and skills from a runway model book and have a walk off. There are some heartwarming scenes too. This really is a great movie. If you have a chance to watch it, check it out.

In Your Game

I thought it would be interesting to stat Meteor Man out for Limitless Adventure's Carbide City game. Initially I thought I'd make him as powerful as Adam the First Man in sheer strength, but I thought it would be more interesting if he was on par with PC's (but with more capabilities).
