#RPGaDay2021 - Day 09

Today I rolled role.

Role can have different meanings in regards to a rpg, but today I'm going to discuss party roll. In many D&D-esque games, characters fill a specific purpose in the party. Many modern games use MMO/video game terms. For example, when you make a D&D party you want a tank (fighter type that can take damage), striker/dps (characters like a rogue that while they can't take the most hits can deal out the punishment, crowd control (wizards and other characters with abilities to control the flow of battle), and support (clerics or other healers/characters that give buffs). Once again, I'm going to talk about the often maligned 4e. It was definitely designed around this idea. It wasn't the first though. While I may be wrong, 3rd edition D&D was the edition that really started focusing on balance among all things (including classes). I think this continues to this day in most modern elf and wizard games.

I know my group tried to have this balance back when we played 2e, but I've heard from other gamers, that this was never an important part of their party make up. How about you? Did you always have balanced parties or have you played in skewed adventuring groups?
