Camp Terror Review

Camp Terror is a funnel-style horror one-shot adventure for Savage Worlds. The pdf is 4.95 and you can get print and pdf for 8.95. As you can tell by the cover, it's got a great style. The pdf is book marked and easy to navigate.

As a funnel characters are designed to die and players start with multiple. There are 14 80's archetypes. It's interesting because the characters start pretty fragile and it isn't until the 3rd act that they become Wild Cards. Bennies are assigned to players, not characters. This works with the funnel nature.

Characters are camp counselors working on cleaning up a camp that was closed 13 years earlier because of a killing spree. Sound familiar? It should, but that's the wonderful thing about the adventure. You can tell the author has a love and understanding of slasher flicks.

The pdf has a great layout and style. The adventure is well designed mechanically, stylistically, and physically. Each act has it's own special rules. There are also several handouts for the adventure.

I'm still trying to get the hang of Savage Worlds and really dig into the game. That being said, this adventure is really well written. Even if you don't play Savage Worlds, this would be great adventure for Dark Places & Demogorgons. Given the adventure's great style and excellent price point, I recommend this to any slasher or 80's horror fan. Also shoutout to Tommy of  The Most Unread Blog On The Internet. Ever. for posting about this one.

My Hero Academia - Marvel Style

Today I found out that notable Venom artist, Ryan Stegman, has done a few My Hero Academia pieces. It's really strange to see these anime/manga characters done in a western comic style, but I love them.

Vengeance The RPG Review

Vengeance The RPG is a minimalist vigilante rpg adaptation of 24XX by Jason Tocci. The game prioritizes description and narrative over complex rules. Instead of math things are resolved with highest die rolled. The rules only take up 2 of the 16 pdf pages.  The game is very upfront. This is not a supers game. I used that tag  for this post because I think the game could be a great resource for supers game, but there's nothing super about the characters in Vengeance The RPG. The game also features adult and mature themes and there is a content warning.

Vengeance the RPG is set in Phantom City. Phantom City is a cesspool of criminal activity. It's not safe. Good citizen stay indoors at note and the police can do little to protect them. Criminals murder, steal, supply drugs, and take part in human trafficking. The only thing fighting back are the men, women, and nonbinary folks that put on costumes work to defend the innocent people of Phantom City.

There are 20 Movers & Shakers in the city briefly mentioned. This section made me smile because it's a who's who of Eric's friends and family. There are several rpg authors and creators mentioned, including a Nurse Justin Isaac, who's down to help Phantom City's vigilantes heal up to fight another day, for a nominal fee of course.

There are 35 Locations you can use to flesh out the city. Again these are given a very short description and are named for creators and folks Eric knows. This also includes four upcoming events that make great plot/adventure hooks.

As I mentioned earlier, the rules only take up two pages. These are supplemented by a set of Origin tables. You can just pick and choose from them or roll. Players will then pick and Archetype. They then choose or invent Skills relevant to their vigilante. Players can pick from a selection of Items.

There are two pages of Quick Adventures that are appropriate for Vengeance The RPG or most supers/vigilante games. There are 14 total and I dug them all. My personal favorite would be Pun's Anarky Circus for obvious reasons. I mean who doesn't love clown burlesque?

There is a really handle and simple set of Investigations tables. You can roll for random contacts, investigation locations, criminal activity details, and twists/problems.

Finally the pdf has a character sheet for the game.

If you like narrative focused games with street level vigilantes, this is the game for you. Even if you aren't a narrative heavy game person, this book is a great tool kit for any supers/vigilante game. It's definitely a useful toolkit and I highly recommend it. If Vengeance the RPG sounds like something you'd be interested in you can get the pdf from DriveThruRPG or a print and pdf bundle from Bloat Games.

Nico TV

Nico’s prequel short is really sweet. Also don’t forget to check out the others:

An Apex Predator... on Cocaine

I love Cocaine Bear, also known as Pablo Escobear and Cokey the Bear. It's a wild story and his stuffed corpse is a mascot for the Kentucky Fun Mall (who sells his merch). Next year a horror-comedy inspired by the OD'ing ursine, directed by Elizabeth Banks hits theaters. Here's the official synopsis:

Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner's plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild thriller finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500- pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow … and blood.

This sounds like a blast to me. Also if you want to add my take on Pablo Escobear to your DCC game, check out these stats I did for the April A-Z Challenge last year.

Music Monday - The Hero!!

Because of my love of My Hero Academia, I've decided to give another superhero anime a second chance. I am really glad I did. One-Punch Man is really entertaining. Really looking forward to season three and hope it's more like the first.

This is the theme for season one which is fantastic!

Also here's a pretty good English cover.

Benny Smackdown

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm about to dive back into Savage Worlds and give it another go. The game uses bennies, which are tokens that can be used to soak damage, help with successes, and do plot things (as of the newest edition). While I might try to pick up some superhero themed poker chips (I believe Wizkids make them as tokens for HeroClix), I think for now I'm going to use my WWE Power Chipz. This was a game WWE released at some point. I know little about it, but I picked these up a while back and they would make excellent bennies.

Do you play Savage Worlds? If so what do you use for bennies?

Music Monday - Mourn No More

Well after posting the last Divide Music MHA video earlier I found out he recently released a new Shigaraki video. Warning it contains season six spoilers.

Getting Super Savage!

I've seen a few friends posting about Savage Worlds recently and it me itching to try to the system again. I have a physical copy of one of the earlier versions of the Explorer's Edition (I understand  there are a few versions of it). I also have a pdf of the Savage Worlds Adventurer Edition Core Rules because of my amazing friend, Mark at Cross Planes

I want to do some supers stuff with it. I've owned Necessary Evil for a while. I bought the pdf and ordered a physical copy of Necessary Evil: Breakout last Friday. Skimmed the pdf and look forward to diving into the physical copy soon. I've not ordered Bedlam City yet, but I used it in my Freedom City games back when I used to run Mutants and Masterminds. It's Iron Age and over the top, but I kind of love it. Haven't totally locked in on what I'm going to to do, but I think I'm going to try to run Breakout (since it takes place before the original Necessary Evil). If my group enjoys it then I'll run the original. If that goes well I'll pick up the Bedlam City Campaign City and start running non-NE supers with the system.

Music Monday - Burn It Down

Time to share Divide's last My Hero Academia song (as of time of posting). This one focuses on the miscreants in the League of Villains.

You Are No Match For M.O.D.O.K.!

The comic above comes from my collection. Grabbed it because of how ridiculous it was. Also thought sharing it was a good excuse to share these Bell of Lost Souls stats I found for M.O.D.O.K.. Looking at the stat block,  in a pinch you could really just reskin a beholder if you want M.O.D.O.K. stats.

I'll Laser Every F**king One Of You

Homelander is a despicable main antagonist in from The Boys (at least the Amazon version, you could argue over the main antagonist of the comic). The character is a monster and even if he was created in a lab and treated as an object, he's iredeemable.

All that aside I'm sharing this awesome gender-swapped picture by Hibren because titties and hips...

And remember if you want to add Homelander to your 5e game, you can find some good stats here.

You Are Not Like The Other Gods I've Killed

Finding myself in a rut when it comes to creating new content so until the creative bug hits me again, I'll be sharing some cool content I've found around the web, like the Gorr the God Butcher 5e stats I found here in a Bell of Lost Souls article.

Music Monday - Filthy Stains

Dabi is a great villain that I hope to learn more about in the next season of MHA. Given his flame powers and mysterious background, I wonder if he has a connection to Endeavour and Todoroki. Considering some revelations I've seen so far in the current season, I wouldn't be surprised if he does.

Music Monday - Into The Dark

Time to let the bad guys of My Hero Academia a time to shine. Overhaul has a really cool like. I liked his arc and motivation.

A New Sun Must Rise

The second part of the Midnight Suns prequel shorts is online and focuses on Wanda and Magik. After watching episode 1 check it out.

Video Game Inspired DCC Monster Zines!

My friends at Bloat Games are back at it with the  Nightworld & Overworld: The Adventure Continues for DCC RPG Kickstarter. Like many of Eric's smaller projects this one has a reduced funding period (14 days instead of a month).

I reviewed the other versions of Nightworld here. The book contains the same monsters (as well as stats for vampire spawn created by the powerful vampires and alternate forms for vampires). That means we're presented with 41 different monster stat blocks. Of these are 12 (technically 11 because two of the bosses are twins) unique boss monsters. There are also two unique magic weapons present. This is all really easy to drop into any DCC game. In particular, I feel like Nightworld works well with the Dungeon Crawl Classics Horror line of adventures and the Macabre zine. Barnabas and the Conclave of the Apocalpyse make perfect residents of Castle Nekrovania and the monsters of Nightworld flesh out that setting perfectly. Additionally Macabre Volume 1's Deathstalker is the perfect class for a Belmont-inspired character. Here's a sample from the DCC version of Nightworld.

While I've reviewed the original Overworld zine, I've not reviewed Overworld: The Adventure Continues. If Overworld is the unofficial Legend of Zelda monster book, then Overworld: The Adventure Continues is the unofficial Zelda II: The Adventures of Link monster guide. The book gives us 26 new monsters and a new Boss monster template. Additionally the Armored Death stat block includes a new sentient sword, the Fractured Blade. Of the monsters presented my favorite are the giant spiked accessory/weapon giants, the heymore. The three types of knights are pretty dope too. The boss monster template is for Hero Shadows and as a long time Zelda fan, I love this. One thing that makes this zine really useful for judges is that these monsters aren't your typical orcs, goblins, and gnolls. They fit the DCC monsters should be unique mold. Here's a sample of the zine.

If you play DCC you should definitely pick both of these up. You'll find them really useful and be supporting some great creators.

I’m Afraid Of Americans

I know yesterday was Music Monday, but since today is Election Day here in the States I felt like sharing this one.

If you’re in America get out and vote today, but not for the folks who’s party is regularly endorsed by literal neo-Nazis and KKK members.

Music Monday - Million

Mirio Togata aka Lemillion is a really cool character. He's totally altruistic and dealt a bum hand. Despite that he remains hopeful. He also looks a lot like superpowered version of TinTin.

Shroud: Ally or Enemy?

I know he's been around for a long time, but I've recently learned about this interesting character. He's a mix of Batman and the Shadow. He also looks like the Sphinx from Mystery Men

Codename: The Shroud
Name: Maximillian Quincy Coleridge
Team Affiliation: Night Shift, Heroes for Hire, Cult of Kali

Medium Humanoid, Chaotic Neutral

Armor Class: 14
Hit Points: 75
Speed: 30 ft. fly 30 ft.
Challenge: 3 (700 XP)

Str 18 (+4) Dex 18 (+4) Con 18 (+4) Int 16 (+3) Wis 8 (-1) Cha 12 (+1)

Saving Throws: Dexterity +6, Wisdom +1
Skills: Athletics +6, Acrobatics +6, Advanced Technology +5  Stealth +6
Senses: truesight 100 ft.,  Perception 13
Languages: English, Hindi

Traits
Darkforce Manipulation: At-will Shroud can create Darkness as the spell. As long as it's within the effects range (60 ft.) he can shape it. For example he has created small circles of darkness over Captain America's eyes to prevent him from being hypnotized.
Kiss of Kali: Shroud was blinded by a mystic ritual performed by the Cult of Kali. This gives him immunity to sight based effects and attacks. However, the ritual also granted him mystical extrasensory perception at a range of 100 feet. He can see psychic impressions, through mystical darkness, and even through objects. Treat this as the true seeing  and a Ring of X-Ray Vision., but at 100 ft.

Actions
Multiattack. Shroud makes two melee attacks.
Bomberang: Ranged Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, range 60/120 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage. Creatures within 5 ft must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or take half damage.
Unarmed: Melee Weapon Attack. +6 to hit, reach 5 ft, one target, Hit: 6 (1d4+4)  bludgeoning damage.

Background
At age 10, Max Colleridge witnessed her parentings being gunned down in front of him. He then dedicated his life to fighting crime. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Law, he joined the mystical "Cult of Kali." The cult trained him to fight and branded him with the Kiss of Kali, which granted him mystical perception. He fought of criminals alongside heroes such as Namor and Captain America. Eventually after confronting Red Skull in space (a trip that rattled his sanity), Max found he had a connection to the Darkforce. Max decided the best way to stop villains was by posing as one and taking them down from the inside. This has led to him fighting and allying himself with both heroes and villains. He even created a villainous team, Night Shift, to fight other villains.

Music Monday - Scars and Demons

Today's My Hero Academia tracks focus on Shoto Todoroki, Endeavour's son and one of the series protagonists. I like Shoto. He's the kind of character with a chip on his shoulder that I tend to dig.

Westside Wraiths Theives' Guild

Earlier this week Limitless Adventures released a free pdf presenting a new organization to add to 5e game. This pdf, the Westside Wraiths Thieves' Guild, and a few others are available on the sites freebie page. The pdf is 7 pages of content. There is no art specific to the release, but the pages don't look boring and have appropriate fantasy border art. The guild is hidden under the cover of a tannery. Several npcs are presented. Each has three further adventure ideas, treasure, and extra content of some sort. The pdf is broken down as follows:

  • After a short discussion of the pdf and how it can be used, there are guild thief stats.
  • Logan Tannery - we get history and how the tannery became the cover for the guild, stats are given for Thomas Logan, the owner, one of the adventure hooks mentions an owlbear and those stats are presented
  • Wizard - Zazzer Leek is a wizard that identifies potions for the guild, one of her adventure hooks is about an alchemist trying to discredit her and the alchemist is given stats
  • Healer - Kendle Spring is the guilds healer and a priest with a history of violence, her adventure hook includes an exorcism skill challenge
  • Enforcer - Low Blow Bleska is a former pit fighter and the guild's primary enforcer. He's a rough and tumble sort and his special bola chain weapon is given stats.
  • Guildmaster - Master Thief Gendrik runs the knavish group, his adventure hook includes a group of young thugs (which are given stats). Another hook involves  wyvern poison which is presented.
  • There is a Side Quest: Owed Favors that's also presented. This is given to the party by the guild's enforcer and sees him getting the party to take out a gang of wererats muscling in on their terriroty. Stats for the wererats and their giant rat allies are presented.

This is a really useful pdf that can be dropped into any classic D&D style game. I definitely plan on using it in my next game.

The Salem Sisters

The first of the Midnight Suns prequel shorts is out. I love this animation style and would love to see it used for an ongoing series. This short reveals the origin of Lillith and the Hunter, her daughter and new hero created for Midnight Suns.
