Her Heart In A Porcelain Jar

Her Heart In A Porcelain Jar is "a suburban emo sadventure" written by Evey "Filth Gnome" Lockhart with art by Spooky Rusty and Tony Jaguar. It is 8 pages counting the front and back covers.

This is my first Troika! book. If you aren't familiar the game is a science-fantasy game that's rules light and is very much a collaborative experience. The game's setting has many sub-settings called spheres.

The players are recruited by suburban mom, Annette Decanter, who's 19 year old daughter, Joanna has gone missing. Of course there's more to it than that. Within the pages we're given npcs, locations to look, and adventure background. There's some LGBTQ+ representation and unique magic.

There isn't a whole lot to this one, but what is presented is stylish and unique. I'm definitely happy with my purchase. I bought my physical copy from Spear Witch, but you can also grab the pdf here.

I felt like I couldn't talk about an emo book without adding some music to the post, so I thought I'd share the music video that got me hooked on emo things.

Abasezi Review

Abasezi: The Night Dancers  is another new DCC creation created by Ashraf Braden and released through Sanctum Media. This partnership is designed to help a young and up and coming creator.

All Sanctum Media proceeds from this product go directly to the writer, Ashraf Braden. Ashraf is an aspiring game designer and author living near Kampala in Uganda.

In the areas around Kampala, it is not uncommon for workers to make as little as $2/day. By purchasing this product, you are contributing to Ashraf’s ability to be able to continue to write and design games by allowing him the financial breathing room to do so.

Your support of this, and future products of this sort, are greatly appreciated

There are legends in Uganda told of the Abasezi. Seemingly based on a real life cult, the Abesezi, or Night Dancers, are cursed cannibals. The pdf discusses their rituals and habits. These monsters look human and are initially indistinguishable from other locals. Stats are given for individual members as well as a d14 table or special traits that belong to bands.

This is another inexpensive and interesting bit of lore to add to your DCC game.

Take Your Stinking Paws Off Me, You Damned Rotting Ape!

I wanted to take a stab at statting out a Marvel Zombie for 5e. First I looked online at a few variation of Romero-style zombies, then I applied it to one of my pre-existing Marvel write-ups. I decided to go with Hit-Monkey because I wanted a weaker hero and I think the idea is fun. Note, I am unaware of a zombie version of Hit-Monkey already existing, so the art I used is from one of the Call of Duty video games.

-----------------

Codename: Hit-Monkey
Name: Unrevealed
Team Affiliation: Marvel Zombies

Small Undead, Lawful Evil

Armor Class: 14
Hit Points: 75
Speed: 25 ft., climb 30 ft.
Challenge: 3 (700 XP)

Str 16 (+3) Dex 12 (+1) Con 14 (+2) Int 10 (+0) Wis 12 (+1) Cha 6 (-2)

Skills: Athletics +5, Perception +3, Stealth +3
Senses: Darkvision 60 ft, passive Perception 13
Languages: Can speak with animals/beasts, understands English and Japanese

Traits
Grappler. Zombie Hit-Monkey can use his unarmed attack to grapple instead of deal damage (escape DC 13).
Undead Fortitude. If damage reduces the Zombie Hit-Monkey to 0 hit points, it must make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, Zombie Hit-Monkey drops to 1 hit point instead.

Actions
Multiattack. Hit-Monkey makes two attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature the Zombie Hit-Monkey is grappling. Hit: 3 (1d4 +3) piercing damage and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or contract the Hunger Virus. The diseased target can’t regain hit points, and its hit point maximum decreases by 7 (2d6) for every 24 hours that elapse. If the disease reduces the target’s hit point maximum to 0, the target dies and returns to life as a zombie in 1d4 hours.
Katana: Melee Weapon Attack. +5 to hit, reach 5 ft, one target, Hit: 7 (1d8+3)  slashing damage, versatile 1d10.
Semiautomatic Pistol: Ranged Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, range 50/150 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d6+1) piercing damage.
Unarmed: Melee Weapon Attack. +5 to hit, reach 5 ft, one target, Hit: 6 (1d6+3)  bludgeoning damage.

She's A Really Good Dog

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was phenomenal. I might have actually liked it more than the original, though I admit that it couldn't work without that movie. It was full of soul and I cried a few times. One aspect of the flick I enjoyed was Cosmo getting more screen time. I love super pets, though she is more than that. She's a really good dog.

Here's a really good 5e stat block for her. Once again, this isn't mine but was created by Meaghan Colleran over at Bell of Lost Souls. Check out her original post here.

It Belongs In A Museum!

Geeky confession time. I've never been a huge Indiana Jones fan. I remember watching the first three as a kid and they didn't really interest me. As an adult the only one I've watched is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (which I didn't hate but thought was dumb). I know that if I went back and watched the originals now I'd probably love them and I think over the next few weeks I just might do that. Earlier today I found an article that gave game stats for the series' McGuffins. To read the thought process behind their creation check out the original Bell of Lost Souls article here. I think Meaghan Colleran did an excellent job with them.

Also wanted to remind folks this exists.

Deliver Us From Evil

I've loved the Diablo series since I played the first one on PS1 over two decades ago. It's a phenomenal series with great lore. I recently played the open beta for the fourth installment and I think the game will be another great experience.

Check out this live action launch trailer that just dropped.

All Might's Real #1 Fan

Deadpool: Samurai is a manga published by VIZ Media (with oversight and input from Marvel Comics). In the series Deadpool is invited by Iron Man to join the Avengers' Samurai Squad. The manga is a lot of fun. There is one particular chapter that I absolutely loved. Deadpool and Hulk are fighting a clone of Thanos and are knocked silly. DP tries to call but inadvertently calls Japan's #1 hero, All Might! The best part is that he's drawn by Kōhei Horikoshi, the artist and creator of My Hero Academia. The two team up to take Thanos down and Deadpool mentions they've worked together before. As a huge fan of My Hero Academia and Deadpool, I LOVED this. I'm not the only one, judging by this piece of art from Wuicho Tlakuilo.

Rogues' Redemption: The Idea

It may just get lost in Limbo and added to the pile of unfinished games I want to make, but I had idea that I am going to work on. The working title is Rouges' Redemption. I's a superhero setting where the player's a blue collar and C-List villains, like the Flash's Rogues or the protagonists of Minor Threats, who are fighting back against heroes that are taking things too far. I haven't decided if it will be like the plot of Minor Threats (villains have to stop the heroes before they cross a line they can't come back from) or Injustice (heroes are forming a fascist regime). There's also a third option, that like in the Boys, the heroes of the City are secretly corrupt.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards the Minor Threats-esque so that it doesn't get super dark. I know superhero deconstruction is overdone, but I like the idea of a story of villains redeeming themselves through their actions. While the plot will be different, I'll most likely take inspiration from some of the themes from Pinnacle's Necessary Evil.

There are some tropes I don't want to use. For example, evil Superman has been done to death. I was thinking about not including one, though my dude, Wirty, gave me the idea of having a still good Superman character that is aiding the players in their mission to bring down or redeem the falling/fallen heroes. This lets there be a Superman, but also doesn't tarnish what that means.

I already have so much 5e supers content made (and love it as a system) that I might just use that. It wouldn't be hard to use the villains and heroes I've created for the New Punverse to flesh out the setting. I think I'll present premade archetypes (in the vein of Carbide City #1 and #2) and also discuss how to use the standard rules to create a character of the appropriate power level. I do plan on including rules for how characters can advance, but not in the standard way (because in general, other than for specific story purposes, characters in comics tend to stay at the same power level for years).

Of course combat will be an important part of the game, but I also want to focus on other parts of comic books like saving bystanders and such. Also I love the interactions characters have outside of epic fights so there will definitely be roleplay encounters. The idea of what it means to be a hero will also be explored.

Honestly I already have quite a bit of art for this project and a couple of hundred dollars worth of credit to get more superhero stock art.

This idea was inspired by desire to publish supers content. It was also inspired by my discovery of a game with a cool premise, published by a morally shitty company (The Red Room).  If you are wondering why I call them that, they have created gross misogynistic content and their Twitter feed is full of anti-trans rhetoric.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, leave them in the comments.

Enroll At God U Today!

Established in 1965, Godolkin University has made it its mission to train the next generation of heroes.  Enroll today!

Godolkin University is the setting for The Boys spinoff, Gen V. The series will focus on Vought International's super institute for higher learning. The show will explore the lives of competitive, hormonal, young supes looking to be top ranked in the school (and get the best contracts). Think college drama meets Hunger Games. The show is set to premiere later this year. I love The Boys and can't wait to check this one out.

If you want to add The Boys content to your 5e game check out these posts.

Contra Todo Mal!

I haven't made a new supers archetype for Limitless Adventures 5th Evolution games in a while and I thought it was time to change that.

Across the Spiderverse hits theaters June 2. To promote it, Sony has created a Spidersona generator. Not going to go into the evils of AI art, with this uses, just wanted to share. Create your on Spidersona by going here.

It made me look a lot older, so I'm going to say this is an older, more experienced (and world weary) version of the Web-Archvisist. Who's the Web-Archivist? He's my Spidersona. You can check out his Vigilante City stats here and his 5e stats here.

Fuccubus Friday

This is the third printing cover of The Dark of Hot Springs Island. The art was done by Martin Sobr. I realize that naked ladies in chains isn't very 2023, but I love this art and its a nice Frazetta-esque throwback.

Svarku might not be a sex demon, but the lusty efreeti druglord is just as decadent.

Japanese yodeling legend, Takeo Ischi and the Gregory brothers created an epic series of videos dubbed the TCU (Takeo Cinematic Universe). I've posted the videos before (with Vigilante City stats), but I've decided to take a week and share them again (but this time with 5e supers stats). Takeo Ischi is a fascinating performer and I hope you take this as an opportunity to learn about a unique fellow. You can read more about him here.

Come back tomorrow for the remix and Mandarin version of Chicken Attack and 5e stats for Ninja Chickens.

Music Monday - Still Alive

I finally caught up and watched Scream (2022) and Scream VI. While there was a death in the fifth installment that still breaks my heart, I love the direction the past two films have went it. The casts are great too. The latest installment featured this great track from Demi Lovato. The song is really good and I think it would be a great opening theme for a Buffy RPG. The video is pretty cool too. It features Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park (who produced and co-wrote the song) and Spencer Charnas of my favorite band, Ice Nine Kills.

These are my homebrew 5e NPC stats for Ghostface. You could use him in a 80's Horror: Tunnel of Terror or 5e supers game.

Never Going Home: The Beginning & The End

The fine folks at Wet Ink Games have a new Kickstarter for their Never Going Home rpg. The Beginning & The End features three new books. For those of you unfamiliar with the game, it's a Weird War I game. Something has been unleashed and corrupted the soldiers and lands. Strange whispers torment and tempt those caught int he conflict, warping all.

Two of the three books for this project are campaign dossiers. A campaign dossier is a tome that focus on a specific theater of conflict during the First World War.

Set in the Balkans in 1914, Bile In The Streets is a campaign in which characters take the role of Serbian partisans. Characters will take on covert missions. This book will include a new Alarm system for the game, which helps keep the weird toned down for the time before the Veil between worlds was torn. It also includes a list of Grimoires that characters can learn Whispers (magic) from. It also profiles some of the factions working in the shadows.
While Bile In the Streets takes place before the War, Spit In The Dirt takes place in 2018 (the last year of the war). Players take on the role of American soldiers from crossing the Atlantic til the end of the conflict. The book contains new equipment and how to make it, Nightmares rules to corrupt characters faster, and two new Whisper paths (Rage and Conviction).

Unlike the other books in the project, From Beyond The Veil, is a sort of companion book to the previously released Book of Whispers. It is one of my favorite kind of sourcebooks, because it's a collection of optional rules and material. New Deterioration rules make the central Antagonist of a Mission more dangerous. The new Animal Ken Whisper path lets soldiers go Snow White on Mother Nature's critters. The Material Pool gives new rules that encourage players to spend their resources sparingly. Finally there is information about what happens when a character becomes lost to Corruption. These new rules are featured in stand-alone missions.

If you want something different and have an interest in horror or history, this game could definitely appeal to you. The books are gorgeous, the mechanics are unique, and the creators are fantastic people.  Check out Never Going Home: The Beginning & The End on Kickstarter now.
