Slop (2018)

Full disclosure, the titular character, Slop, is played by an old friend who sent me a free copy of the film.


Synopsis: A missing child leads to a grisly discovery in an old barn. When a news team sneak into the crime scene after dark they soon come face to face with the killer.

The Good: The film does a great job of presenting a solid slasher within the confines of 40 minutes. Actually I think it was an improvement over a lot of slashers. While it's true we don't get to really get invested in the victims, we're still presented with a complete slasher tale. Also the way the opening scene is presented we see victims and get flashbacks of how they got where they were. This is a clever way of presenting things and almost made the film seem like a sequel to something else. Finally the killer really makes this one. Slop is creepy af, solidly built, and has some creative kills.

The Bad: They acting isn't going to win any Oscars and I'm guessing this was some of these folks first roles. The dialogue doesn't always feel natural either. Considering the genre, that works though. There are a few scenes that the sound quality seemed a bit off too.

Final Thoughts: The movie is far from perfect. However, it does a great job considering it had a micro-budget and you can tell that there's love put into the project. I enjoyed it. It's entertaining and has some fun kills that you don't have to wait forever to see.

In Your Game: You can definitely use a killer like Slop in any SURVIVE THIS!! game. He makes a twisted survivor in Zombies!, a classic slasher for Dark Places & Demogorgons, and a deranged killer that needs to be brought to justice in Vigilante City.

Brightburn (2019)


Synopsis: A small town Kansas couple that have been unable to have a child think they've recieved a miracle when the discover a small alien craft with a baby boy in the woods near their house. They raise the young boy and name him Brandon. Unfortunately for humanity, around his 12th birthday young Brandon finds out just how special he is. 

The Good: I thought this movie was an outstanding take on the superhero genre as seen through a horror lens. There were some fantastically disturbing scenes and while the body count throughout most of the film isn't high, when someone bites it, they do so painfully and there's typically a lot of blood. In contrast to the horror I though the cast did a phenomenal retelling Superman's origin. There was an earnest and real feeling to the family portrayed. It was heartfelt. Finally, I won't go into detail about the credits scene, but I it was outstanding!

The Bad: I've never been a fan of jump scares in horror and this has a few. It's easy for me to say this because I didn't make the movie, but I would have liked Brandon's change to be more organic, like that of  Plutonian in Irredeemable.

Final Thoughts: The movie wasn't perfect, but it was everything I expected it to be and I really enjoyed it. I liked seeing some familiar faces from Gunn's past films.

In Your Game: A character like Brandon would make a dangerous and troubling foe for a team of vigilantes. That's why in inspired next week's Vigilante File. Check out the artwork Josh created for it.

Sharkansas Women's Prison Massacre (2015)

Synopsis: A group of female convicts on a work crew in an Arkansas swamp attempt to escape and find themselves being hunted by prehistoric sharks released into the ecosystem by fracking.

The Good: I love the name of this movie! The flick also has some nice T&A. That's really about it (one of the scientists even makes a comment about it). It's interesting, despite being convicts, the ladies all have really nice bras on in the beginning.I also like that the movie uses fracking in the plot.

The Bad: The acting is bad. Seriously, how many times do you need to have a character say "crap on a cracker"? The effects aren't good. Also the ending doesn't make sense. Yes allowing one of the girls to escape and claiming she was eaten gets her to her son closer, but I'm pretty sure trying to make a living and take care of folks is hard if the government thinks you're dead.

Final Thoughts: This is another cheesy movie I found on Tubi. I don't recommend it, unless you really just like cheesy shark movies.

The Barn (2016)

Synopsis: In 1989, Sam and his friend Josh enjoy their last Halloween before adulthood with a group of friends. Things take a dark and bloody turn with the teens awaken demons of a local legend.

The Good: The movie is set in the late 80's and everything about it feels like that. It even has fake cigarette burns at times. However, unlike many modern movies set then, it doesn't turn it into a joke. It's just very true to the spirit of the setting. I really enjoyed the main characters. Their friendship was admirable and I could relate. Sam's eccentric Halloween rules also made me smile. You can tell the movie doesn't have a large budget, but the kills are still cool. The demon designs are awesome!

The Bad: I really don't have any complaints about this one.

Final Thoughts: This is Dark Places & Demogorgons, the movie. Sam and Josh's town could easily be J'town. I loved this flick. It really might be my favorite horror movie of the last two years. Also, like the last few horror flicks I've talked about, it is on Tubi. Finally check out this retro comercial for the mobile game based on the movie.

Ash Wednesday - The Necronomithong

I blame my friend, Jon Snow, for this post.

The Necronomithong

No one knows who created this truly horrendous artifact (or what woman would want it near her lady bits), but it exists and the world is more damned for it. The piece of damned clothing is sentient (which yes, makes it even creepier) and connected to the Necronomicon.  The wearer always knows in what direction and distance the tome is from them. The Necronomithong refuses to be covered and the wearer cannot cover it with clothing. Deadites and demons attracted to the wearer's gender are slightly enamored with them. They will not attack them first the wearer gets a +4 to social roles against them.

All Hallows' Eve (2012)

Synopsis: In this horror anthology, babysitter, Sarah, and the kids she's looking after decide to watch a strange video tape found in one of the trick-or-treat bags. The tape features three stories which are all connected by the presence of the horrific Art the Clown. The first involves a woman kidnapped and subjected to demonic birth rites, the second involves alien home invaders, and the final features Art stalking a college student. 

The Good: The robed monsters in the first feature look like a great mashup of Full Moon Features vampires and Creepypasta. The alien segment was creepy. I think the final segment is the strongest. It really felt like a throwback slasher.

The Bad: While I enjoyed them, the clips kind of frustrated me too. I'm used to slasher victims making stupid choices and dying for them. However, if they do actually make some good ones, I like them to be rewarded. While not everything done by the characters in the film is great, there are some definite smart moves that don't play out. The film doesn't have a high budget and the costumes kind of show that.

Final Thoughts: Like many recent flicks I've watched, I checked this one out because it was on Tubi. I also watched it because I watched Art the Clown's solo film, Terrifier, last Halloween. I enjoyed All Hallows' Eve, but unlike some horror anthologies I don't see myself watching this one again.

Art is some sort of supernatural creature, though I don't know what kind. Since, I've been doing old school World of Darkness posts, to go with something strange. My version of Art is an independent Baali ghoul. He doesn't have a direct vampiric master and serves darker, infernal masters that make sure he's supplied with vitae.

Jarnbjorn, the Iron Bear

I've decided to stat another Asgardian artifact, this time looking at Thor's weapon he uses during his unworthy phases.

The powerful axe Jarnbjorn was forged by dwarves and is made of the same magical steel as Mjolnir. The weapon has been blessed with Thor's lifeblood and can cut through virtually anything (including Celestial armor). The axe deals d8 damage and ignores all toughness.

Music Monday - I.C.K.

Ice Cream Kitty was one of the more bizarre, but cute additions to the TMNT mythos via the 2012-2017 Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series. Here's a musical tribute the chilly kitty (who was voiced by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman).

Ice Cream Kitty started live as a normal stray tabby cat in NYC. April found her in an alley and asked Mikey to take care of her. He agreed to raise it as a pet. The cat ate some Neopolitan ice cream covered in mutagen and mutated into a sentient cat-ice cream hybrid. She is cute, cuddly, and extremely lovable. She also lives in the turtles' ice chest.

Walrus + Bear + Cocaine = Vigilante File?

Sir Reginald Albert Wallcroft is the newest npc to grace the streets of Vigilante City. He's a wealthy British business man and former big game hunter. He was transformed into a walrus anthropomorph and has since devoted his life to philanthropy for other anthropomorphs. At least that is his public facade. He's actually turned his eye to more dangerous game: vigilantes and other megahumans. He hedonist, he also has an illicit drug problem,which can lead to some wild encounters.

In addition to Sir Reginald the pdf also includes stats for a mutated bear on cocaine, my tribute to Cocaine Bear.

Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan (2013)

Synopsis: A group of offenders in their late teens/early 20's are chosen to be a part of a special program to avoid jail time. They must do a week long woodland retreat including therapy sessions and arduous physical activity. While hiking on of the youths finds a large horned skull and takes a horn from it as a souvenir. Unfortunately the skull belonged to Paul Bunyan's beloved Babe. Now the giant, who's still very much alive, wants revenge for the defilement of his beloved companion's grave. 

The Good: Taking a tall tale like Paul Bunyan and giving it a horror twist is a really clever idea. He looks cool too. He's basically a giant version of Victor Crowley from Hatchet.

The Bad: The acting is hella bad as is the CGI. Some of the kills look ridiculous (see below) and Babe the Blue Ox looked extra weird.

Final Thoughts: Much like Clown Town, I decided to watch this because it is currently free on Tubi. It's a one time and never again kind of movie. I watched it and don't regret that, but I don't have any desire to watch it ever gain.

In Your Game: Pual Bunyan would make an interesting adversary for a World of Darkness game. Is he a giant formori or just a human aberration. I tend to prefer the last. Imagine what happens if for some reason a pack of Gangrel run into him. It probably wouldn't end well for the Gangrel.

Clown Town (2016)


Synopsis: Four friends stop in a small town to pick up a lost phone while on the way to a concert and find themselves stranded and stalked by killer clowns.

The Good: The film has an interesting premise and killer clowns should be scary. The protagonists are likable enough. Also the movie takes place in my neck of the backwoods (southern Ohio) and mentions Columbus. That won't mean much to most, but makes me smile.

The Bad: This isn't a good movie by any stretch of the word. The dialogue is cheesy and the scares are almost non-existent. Also towards the end their's a plot twist that is kind of wasted.

Final Thoughts: I watched this one because I remember thinking the trailer looked interesting when I saw it a while back and it's currently free to watch on Tubi. Honestly, it wasn't awful, just kind of mediocre. I don't regret watching it and probably won't ever watch it again, but I did get some game-worthy ideas, so there's that. 

In Your Game: Homicidal clowns sound like a nice diversion for some neonate vampires. I could even see a nasty Malkavian or a Baali having one ghouled.

Happy 75th Birthday Danny Trejo!

Today is Danny Trejo's 75th birthday. He's one of my all time favorites and seems to be a genuinely awesome dude.  I thought I'd stat out a few of his characters. I went with Machete (old school World of Darkness) and Frank Vega (SURVIVE THIS!!).  Statting him as a vampire, as seen in the From Dusk Til Dawn flicks and more recently What We Do In The Shadows, would have made more sense for the World of Darkness stats, but I wanted Machete.

Frank Vega was a Vietnam vet trying to live a normal life, when his bad ass beat down of a couple of skinheads went viral. Around the same time, his best friend (and fellow vet) Klondike was killed and Frank found himself wrapped up in criminal and political intrigue. He had a few adventures after that with former hockey player, Bernie Pope.  The pair have begun helping those that can't be helped with the funding of their new wealthy friend, Earl.

Crisis in Vigilante City aka Introducing Vigilante File Story Arcs

The Lone Bards are looking to expand our Vigilante Files offerings. One new idea we have is our Story Arcs. These are going to be sandbox style module/settings. There will be an overarching plot/danger with hooks and small plots/dangers that can be used in conjunction with the main plot. You can expect stats of the major players and mooks, new equipment/items, and maybe even a class or other  content. 

The design principles come from Josh's one page adventures. Josh is not a fan of the standard modules that most GM's are familiar with. Highly detailed maps and text boxes aren't really his bag and they kick his anxiety into overdrive. That was the inspiration for the Story Arc format.

I like to think of them like the annual comic book events that we all love and hate. 

Josh already has one he's working on, Invasion!



Invasion will see Martian forces invading the city. The pdf will include stats for the martians and their advanced technology, detail various action zones the players can interact with, and even include what happens in the aftermath. Much like Spider-Man: Homecoming, we'll take a look at the tech that gets left behind after an invasion and how it changes things. Also, for those of you that didn't know, this Story Arc was hinted at in our Free Comic Book Day offering: Crisis on Free Comic Book Day!.



I've wanted to do a vampire-centric event and inspiration has hit me today. 


War of the Vampire Lords (working title) will pit two iconic vampire lords with beef against each other: Count Dracula and Prince Mamuwalde! Now I obviously don't own the rights to the Blacula films, but I can that doesn't mean I can create an expy of him. I will also include my Mamuwalde headcannon and establish that he was a prince of Wakanda (or the Wakanda with serial numbers filed off country in our setting). There will be stats for Drac, Mamuwalde, possibly Orlock and Bathory, a vampire cult, voodoo practitioners, Wakanda-esque tech, and possibly dhampyr and vampire slayers classes.

Rejoining the Masquerade

Recently I have had a desire to run a vampire game. I have Vampire: The Requiem and Blood Dark Blood Dark Thirst is a simple and elegant game design, but doesn't have the depth that I want. It's very similar to old school Vampire in concept, but gets rid of the all of the meta plot and clans and such. Thing is, I really liked all that stuff and it was part of the reason I loved old school Vampire so much. I think the rules are tighter in Vampire: The Requiem, but I'm not as big a fan of the lore.
Thirst.

Unfortunately for me I got rid of all of my old school World of Darkness books with my last move. I had so much stuff and I honestly figured I'd be okay playing a different game.

I was wrong.

So now while I'm not going crazy and just going out and buying everything, I've decided to slowly build my OG Vampire collection back up. The cool thing though is this time I am going to do more of my own thing and I know the rules pretty well so I'm just picking up cheap books here and there. From what I've read about the revisions to the newest edition, plus the drama surrounding it, I've just decided to stick to the older stuff.

For example for my core book I just bought a copy of Vampire: The Dark Ages off of Amazon. It was only 12 with shipping and has most of what I need. I also snagged the original Assamite clan book for 4 bucks on Ebay and found the Dark Ages Book of Storyteller's Secrets and Companion yesterday at the mall. I plan on running a modern chronicle, but there's a lot of stuff that I can pull from the Dark Age books.

Not sure when I'll actually get a game off the ground, but I think I'm going to try to get my Dark Places & Demogorgons crew to play. None of them have any World of Darkness experience, so it'll be new and fresh for them.

Owned by an anthropomorph rabbit named Harvey, the club's exotic dancers are all mutants and anthropomorphs. The establishment is considered neutral ground and a great site for intrigue. Ghoul Is Hungry For Vengeance

My favorite villains tend to be tragic villains. Even if they do morally reprehensible things, there is a part of me that has sympathy for them. While it wasn't my original intention, that's what I played on when I wrote Ghoul. I decided the character would be a lot more memorable if she was a sidekick that had fallen in the line of duty. This also gave her motivation beyond just eating flesh. As I've been doing before, I also wanted to tie it into our previous releases, so I decided she was killed by Pummel. What do you think? Do you like sympathetic villains?

Drugula and the Silver Screen

Last week I mentioned The Lone Bards Dark Streets & Darker Secrets adventure Drugula and the Silver Screen. This morning we released a Vigilante City conversion of it under our Vigilante Files line.

The adventure is a free flow horror romp that centers around a vampire that snatches folks up, drugs them, and gets high off victims while feeding. Josh wrote the adventure and I did the Vigilante City stats. Crunchwise the adventure contains stats for Drugula, his drugged up ghoul minions, and a magical item with dark potential, the Heart of Max Schrek.

While the adventure was written with Vigilante City in mind, it makes a great Dark Places & Demogorgons adventure. You can take a bite out of the adventure by going to this link.

Is Your Vigilante City Character Worthy?

I know characters like Thor are beyond the power scope Vigilante City is designed for, but I think something like Mjolnir could be a cool plot device for the game, 

Mjolnir
The magical hammer Mjolnir can only be wielded by the truly worthy granting them great strength (+4 Strength). It deals 1d6+1 points of bludgeoning damage and can be thrown 60' feet by a mortal able to wield it (even farther for a god). It will return to the thrower's hand the following round. In addition, the bearer of Mjolnir gains a fly speed of 18 and can fire lightning 80', dealing 1d6+2 electric damage.

Maybe Erik Thorson will find it?
