This Will All End In Tears

This Hitchhiker’s Guide/Marvel mash-up is hilarious!

The Spider Within

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally slated to release yesterday. Obviously it didn't come out and while that sucks, I'm glad the creators are taking their time with the project. We did get something to hold us over though. The Spider Within is a short film set within Sony's Spider-Verse.

The film was created in partnership with the #KevinLoveFund and the education initiative: #TheHeroWithin. There is a lesson plan that accompanies the film which can be viewed here.

Creation Is An Act Of Sheer Will!

If you are only familiar with the movies, John Hammond just seems like a dedicated (but naive) scientist with a dream. However, the original book version was more sinister. That version is the inspiration for these stats by Meaghan Colleen of Bell of Lost Souls.  These stats were originally posted here. I think these stats would be perfect for a 5e supers antagonist.

It’s Good To Be Wanted

Outlaws of Thunder Junction is the next MtG set. This one brings together characters from various planes and seems them become an outlaw gang in a fantasy western setting. I think it looks awesome.

WE DIE YOUNG Kickstarter

Another Bloat Games SURVIVE THIS!! rpg is getting the OSE treatment. We Die Young is on Kickstarter now. I love the original version of the game. You can check out my review here. The current campaign is for an Old-School Essentials update and an Ultimate SURVIVE THIS!! update. Pledge today to get some great early bird prices. This pairs great with Dark Places & Demogorgons and even if you aren't interested in the more modern setting, will provide some great additional content to your standard OSE game.

Check out the Kickstarter today!

Dr. Steinman is a memorable villain and this live action video from JT Music highlights that well.

Ride the Lightning

Leairis does Artsy Stuff just posed a print she created for an upcoming con and I love it. If Storm was a Pokemon trainer, she'd definitely rock a team of electric types.

Into The Multiverse

As y'all know I love superheroes. While most of my favorite characters and stories in the genre are from DC Comics, I love Marvel and other publishers too. The other day I shared info about the upcoming Deadpool comic/adventure for the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game. I still haven't played or read through that game, but after making that post I remembered my friend Stew had a copy of it. I went to his house and he let me borrow it (well right now I'm borrowing it, but soon I will be buying it from him). I've only read through the first few chapters, but I think the game has some potential. After I give it a thorough reading I will post a review.

I also already know what character I'm going to stat out to get used to the character creation rules.

What Does T.D.K. Stand For?

Decided to stat out one of the weirder Suicide Squad members in preparation for A-Z.

T.D.K., also known as The Detachable Kid, is a metahuman criminal that was recruited into Task Force X during The Suicide Squad. While seriously injured during the battle of Corto Maltese, he is never shown to die in the movie and according to the director, he survived. Created for the movie, he is possibly based on Arm-Fall-Off-Boy

Armor Class: 13 (Armor, Dexterity)
Hit Points: 27 (6d6+6)

The Spider Trailer

Starring The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs as Peter Parker, The Spider is an upcoming fan film that will give us a horror take on Spider-Man. Do we need a horror take? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean I’m not really interested in seeing how it turns out.

Mutant Academia

This X-Men/My Hero Academia mashup is fantastic.

World’s Finest D&D Game

I love this piece of DC heroines playing old school D&D and wanted to share. It was created by artist Kyle Latino.

Deadpool Role-Plays the Marvel Universe

Deadpool & Wolverine debuts July 26th and (imho) Marvel has come up with a brilliant comic and game tie-in. Deadpool Role-Plays the Marvel Universe is a comic-sized fourth wall breaking one-shot adventure for the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game. The one-shot will include a comic by Cullen Bunn (author of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe) and allow players to take the role of Deadpool and his team (or characters of their own creation).

This is an awesome format and is the same used by Limitless Adventures 5evo adventures. I've not played the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game yet, but I definitely want to give it a try. TBH, even if I don't end up getting the game, I will probably get this adventure because it's a cool idea.

Get Out Of Hell Free Card

And here is another teaser of what you will see during the A to Z Blogging Challenge.

Originally appearing in Secret Six, the Get Out of Hell Free card is the McGuffin of Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. Sought after by those that don’t wish to spend in eternal damnation, this one time use item allows a soul to bypass Judgement and go straight to Heaven, no matter how stained their souls are.

Get Out of Hell Free Card
consumable, legendary

Any individual that holds this card or has it on their person when they die immediately goes to Heaven/the Higher Plains. Their alignment is considered good for the purposes of spells/effects, unless they commit an evil act after entering the Outer Planes.

Fatality. Peacemaker Wins!

Despite the fact he killed one of my favorite characters, I love John Cena as Peacemaker. He recently dropped as a DLC character for Mortal Kombat 1 (another property owned by Warner Bros). Check out the gameplay trailer.

This is another taste of what is to come with the A to Z Blogging Challenge. If you want to check out 5e content I have already created for Peacemaker, here you go:

The Soultaker Sword

Consider this a teaser of what you will see during the A to Z Blogging Challenge.

Wielded by the Outsiders and Suicide Squad's Kitana, the Soultaker is a magical Katana capable of absorbing the souls of those it kills. The bearer can communicate with the souls and use their knowledge.
Soultaker
Weapon (longsword), legendary (requires attunement)

This magical katana grants its wield a +1 to hit and damage with the blade. Any creature killed by the Soul Taker is absorbed into the blade. They may not be reincarnated, resurrected, or be turned into intelligent undead by any means (with the possible exception of a Wish spell at the DM's discretion). They may call upon the knowledge of the souls trapped in the blade. As an action they can use this knowledge to gain proficiency in all skills of a chosen Ability. The duration of this feature lasts until a Long Rest. Once this ability is used it may not be used again until the wielder takes a Long Rest.

------------------
If you've played Baldur's Gate 3 the swords ability to draw upon the knowledge of the souls trapped within will look familiar. It’s the same as the Githyanki's Astral Knowledge ability.

Clash With Some Kaiju

Here's another "Let's Play D&D With..." article from Meaghan Colleran of Bell of Lost Souls that pairs nicely with her Let's Play D&D With Godzilla and Kong article. The stat block below is a generic Pacific Rim-style Kaiju.

Blogging A to Z 2024 Theme Reveal

With all the recent changes in my life I hadn't thought about the Blogging A to Z challenge until I saw Tim's post on The Other Side Blog. I've been on a big Suicide Squad kick again (don't know that I'm ever not on one tbh) and have decided that my theme this year with be Task Force X/Suicide Squad.

For the month I will be statting members of the Squad or possibly other gear/rules/etc related to them. I'm drawing from the main continuity, movies, video games, cartoons, and multiverse.

Check out the main Blogging A to Z website to learn more about the challenge.

He's Just A Fungi

Looking to add some fungal horror to your 5e game, check out this "Let's Play D&D With..." article from Meaghan Colleran from Bell of Lost Souls.

Plant Fortitude is a typical zombie's Undead Fortitude. Looks like was pasted into the stat block they forgot to change an instance of zombie. Glad to know I'm not the only one that does that. Anyway, I would change the reference to radiant damage to fire, because clickers aren't undead, but as plants are weak to fire. Also the bite should do piercing damage.

Beware My Power...

I've decided I want to start statting out the various Lantern Corps for 5e. My plan is to devote a week to each Lantern Corps. The plan is to stat a generic recruit, generic veteran, and then at least one named member of the Corps. After going through the emotional spectrum I'll then try to highlight a few of the more obscure Corps. Going to give myself a week to come brainstorm and come up with some stuff, so I'll probably start it the week of the 17th.

The pic below is from JUSTICE LEAGUE VS GODZILLA VS KONG #7 and was chosen because it's badass and I knew it would get attention. If you have want to add Titan/Kaiju goodness to your 5e game you can check out this post.

Jeff the Land Shark

Jeff the Land Shark is the former pet of Gwenpool and later Deadpool.  He’s adorable and so are these videos.

Code 8: Part II (2024)

Plot
Set a few years after the original, Lincoln City is changing. The guardian program is deemed to forceful and a rising celebrity cop takes the lead on introducing new "non-lethal" K-9 units. After a powered individual is killed, his little sister (who also has powers), flees and comes into contact with the film's protagonist, Connor. In order to protect her, Connor must turn to Garrett, the powered criminal from the first film.

Review
The time jump in the movie moves things forward, but doesn't bog things down with too much detail.  Once again, I really dig Robbie Amell as the lead. I'm still not a big Stephen Amell fan, but honestly  he plays a great douche bag, which is what his character Garrett is. Sierena Gallamgaus does an excellent job as Pav, the young lady Connor is trying to help. Finally Alex Mallari Jr. is excellent as the hot shot corrupt police officer leading the K-9 program, King.

If you liked Code 8, then you should definitely check the sequel out. Based on the closing scenes, there could be another sequel and I'm down for that. Once again I hope that if there is a sequel they talk more about Psyke., I still don't know enough about it. Does it just get people really high?

Like the Guardians, K-9's would be a great addition or evolution of the ERT in Carbide City.

Punch a Nazi Week - Der Hyena

Here's another Nazi villain for your characters to pummel.

Music Monday - Raphael’s Final Act (Metal Cover)

Raphael is a devil you encounter during various scenes in Baldur’s Gate 3. He’s quite charming and is always trying to make a deal. Much to the surprise of many players, he breaks out into song like a Disney villain towards the end of the game if you fight him.

This is a really good metal cover of that song.

Punch A Nazi Week - Reb

Each day this week I will be posting 5e stats for a Nazi villain to send against your supers.

Not much is known about Reb. He made one appearance and his incarnation of the Aryan Brigade was taken out pretty easily by the Freedom Fighters. Seems like just another racist asshole with guns to me.

Code 8 (2019)

Plot
In a world where 4% of the population are born with special powers, those with special gifts are marginalized. Once seen as a boon, they are now hated and discriminated against. They are policed by automaton police drones called guardians. To get money to provide medical care for his dying mother, a young powered individual, Conner, gets mixed up with some powered criminals.

Review
Michael, one of the creators of Carbide City, recommended this flick to me because he said it was similar to the setting. I can definitely see some parallels. There is definitely a pre-Days of Future Past X-Men vibe too. The population fear those with powers and the Guardians are stand-ins for sentinels. Despite being a powered/supers film, the film isn't super flashy. This works and gives it a grounded and gritty feel. The story is a classic crime drama, with comic book fantasy elements added. The acting is pretty good, though I'm not the biggest fan of Stephen Amell. I enjoyed his cousin Robbie's performance.

There is some nice world building, though I'd also liked to know more. For example, there is an epidemic of a drug called Psyke. It's made from powered individuals' spinal fluid, but it's effects are really discussed. Also, there is some sort of over-arching criminal organization called the Trust, but we don't learn too much about them.

A sequel dropped on Netflix this week and I hope it answers these questions.

In Your Game
While Carbide City appears to be welcoming to Evo's there is a darker side of things and the ERT (Evo Response Team) could easily be replaced by the robots like the guardians at some point.

Guardian

Damage Immunities: poison, psychic
Condition Immunities: blinded, charmed, deafened, exhaustion, frightened, paralyzed, petrified, poisoned
