Penicillin Issue 1

I recently snagged a copy of a rather interesting rpg zine at Super-Fly Comics & Games. The first issue of Penicillin is as much a piece of art as it is gaming supplement. There are several poems and pieces of creative prose. Honestly, while there is definitely some quality gaming content (my favorites being the strange diseases and the lunar vampires), it's the photography, creative writing, and other artistic pieces that set this apart from the run of the mill gaming zine. The work ends with what I'm presuming is the author's personal Appendix N.

You can get a pdf copy of Penicillin Issue #1 here. If you'd like to get a physical copy, the author has an email address listed on the itch.io page. I'm really glad I picked this one up and honestly, might go back to Super-Fly to be the other copy I saw, just so I an send it to a friend. If you have a chance to sang a copy of this one, do it.

Update:

You can purchase print copies from Exalted Funeral.

Captured Screams

I've spoken several times about my love for the Ohio-based film company, Concept Media LLC. Check out this sexy horror short, written, directed, and starring Brittany Blanton (star of Don't Fuck in the Woods). Make sure to like the video and subscribe to Concept Media's YouTube page.

I think the villain of this would make an interesting bad guy for a World of Darkness, Cinematic Unisystem, or Dark Streets and Darker Secrets game.

Phylactery #1

Do you want a plethora of amazing OSR content for your games? Of course you do! Planet X Games has you covered. I recently snagged an original copy of Phylactery #1 and limited run Grindhouse Edition version. Content-wise, they are both the same, I just wanted both because I love Levi's stuff.

So you're probably wondering what you get in this bad boy, right? Counting the covers you get 48 pages of facemelting goodness!

  • 10 NPC's
  • 16 Magic Items
  • 3 Unique Spellbooks, 1 Spell
  • 3 Random Charts
  • 2 Diabolical Cults
  • 3 Adventures/Sites/Hexcrawls
  • 4 Monsters
Not only is the content dope as hell, but Levi has also given information that can make them a living part of your game. This is a really nice touch that I wish more writers did. The random charts are one of my favorite thing. Levi always has fun with these. I'm also a big fan of Corpse Garden of the Myconid King. I love shroom bois, so this one hit just right.

Also like any PX Games release, it looks fantastic. The art and cartography is all done by great folks like Skullfungus, Ian McGartiy, JE Shields, Ed Bickford, Lawrence Hernandez, and Adrian Landeros.

If you want a copy of this (and trust me, you're wrong if you don't), go to the PX Games Facebook page and find out how to get your own copy.

Champions of the Electrocube War Volume 2

Fainting Goat Games is back with another volume of Champions of the Electrocube War. I've already reviewed Volume One and Mike was cool enough to share Volume Two with me. If you want to see the actual play series this and the first supplement are based on, you can find it here.

Here's what you're going to find in this volume:

  • 11 Adventure Hooks
  • Red-Line (VK) - heroic support bot that spends his spare time helping humans in need, his description mentions "impostor' mini-bots, which I'm assuming look human (this is an awesome idea)
  • Ultra-Bomber (CL) - the villainous leader is expanded from his appearance in the Valor Knights core.
  • Sextus-Null (CL) - this conniving warrior and second in command to Omega-Zed (who was described in the last volume), unlike many Chaos Lords, he sees value in allying with humans
  • Sonic Assault (CL) - expanded from the core book, this overcompensating and trash talking mini-bot is the rival to my favorite Valor Knight, Nitro-Strike (though she probably doesn't even know he exists)
  • Chaos Lord Drone (CL) - the dastardly Chaos Lords have found a way to fight the war without risking their lives, there are three variations: Average, Elite, and Heavy

If you play Valor Knights, you're going to want to pick this one up. You can snag it here.

Music Monday - Stormbringer

Pagan Fury is a Swedish folk metal band that recently showed up on my Spotify playlist. After listening to this track, I have no doubt that, whether they intended it or not, they recorded the perfect theme for Critical Role's Yasha.

Plutonian Mimic (Valor Knights)

I stopped at an antique store this week and found a Happy Meal toy that I used to have and love. It's a little plane from Hot Wheels Attack Pack. I used to love those, even though I never had the big ones and only had the Happy Meal versions. It is about the size of the recent Transformers minis I picked up from Dollar Tree and I decided it would be a cool mini for the game.

Plutonian Mimic

Plutonian Mimics are shapeshifting organisms native to the dwarf planet. They can survive intense pressure and don't require oxygen. While they start life small, they can grow to be as large as a stealth bomber or semi-truck and trailer. On Earth they often take the forms of vehicles to lure prey. While they don't pose a direct threat to many Techtrillions, their hunger for flesh and vehicular appearance can lead to paranoia and fear being spread among the human population about the robots in disguise.

  • Swallow Whole - An a successful attack the mimic can swallow a man-sized creature whole.
  • Adhesive - Despite their appearance, mimics are are pliable and covered in a mucus that is adhesive to organic matter. While this doesn't affect Techtrillions, it can spell disaster for their human allies.

Highway of Blood Review

Highway of Blood is a Call of Cthulhu grindhouse adventure set in the 1970's. Released by Critical Hit Publishing, it's available in pdf and print on demand from DriveThruRPG. While its spelled out on the cover, this one isn't for everyone and it contains the following topics, which could be triggering to some: drug use, disturbing sadistic violence, rape (implied), torture, cannibalism, body horror, and violence against children.

The adventure center includes inbred mutant rednecks, snake people, high speed car chases, and a town appropriately named Abattoir. This adventure oozes style. The layout and font color choices are appropriate and it's an easy read. Pertinent information is placed in strategic spots. There are several GM tips scattered throughout to help make the experience the best it can be. I really like the music recommendations for different set pieces. When I run this I will use them like one of the suggestions as an eerie prophetic/commentary.

In regards to GM advice, the book does an amazing job of discussing the harsh topics presented here and how to deal with them at the table. There is a whole page to talk about how to present these things to your party, consent, and what to do. This info is right up front and discussed before the rest of the adventure. In an era where the topic of consent is at the forefront of discussion, this is a nice move on behalf of the publisher.

The writers set out to make an adventure that feels like a grindhouse/slasher flick and they succeeded. Things are entertaining and feel like a movie. I kind of want to make a trailer for the adventure. If I had a better computer to work on I would. Given the setting and cinematic nature of the adventure, this one is built for one shots. However, there are several crunchy bits that can be incorporated into your on going Call of Cthulhu chronicle. The following are included in the various appendices:
  • Nonlethal weapons
  • Car chase rules
  • Extensive desert environment rules
  • NPC's (4 unique and 1 minion)
  • Monsters (4 total)
  • Spells (2)
  • Magic items (2)
  • Radioactive materials rules
  • Vehicle stats (5)
Like all good Call of Cthulhu adventures, Highway of Blood has several handouts to give to players to help immerse them in the adventure.

If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of this one. If you want something different for your Call of Cthulhu games or are just a fan of grindhouse things, check it out. Honestly, I'm already thinking about how I can use this for World of Darkness, Dark Places & Demogorgons, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, and even Vigilante City (using the investigator options presented).

Deer Leg Numb Chucks (DCC Edition)

Someone shared this pic on the Dark Trails RPG Facebook page and I was reminded that I statted them out for D&D 5e. I decided Dark Trails/DCC needed a version of them too

These bizarre mystical weapons are a product of native spirit magic, far eastern martial arts techniques, and 100% pure American weirdness. The weapons deal 1d3 damage and anyone hit by them must make a DC 13 Fortitude save or lose their next action die. Each time these items are used they magically corrupt the person a bit more. Small deer antlers will grow from the wielder's head. They will continue to grow until the wielder has a mighty rack. Once they are full grown the wielder can make a gore attack in addition to their regular attacks for 1d6 damage with an action die of d16. These horns are permanents and even if cut off, they will regrow.

Your D&D Pocket Character Zine

My friend Kristyn LOVES zines. She makes them. She collects them. She even runs a YouTube channel called Zine Cuisine that you should subscribe to. You should also like their Facebook page and tell them I sent you. I wanted to show y'all these really cool 5e character sheet zines she sells.

I know they aren't for everyone, but personally, I'm a big fan. While I don't think character sheets are necessarily overwhelming, I know a lot of new players that do. I also like these because though their dimensions are smaller, I think they'd be harder to lose/misplace.

What do you think?

If you'd like some of these character sheets, message the Zine Cuisine Facebook page to find out how to order them.

Apple-Man Trailer

Levi from Planet X Games shared this with me recently and I had to pass it on. This trailer is for a short movie written and directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Vasyl Moskalenko. It was shot during the on-going Covid-19 lockdown in Vasyl's 150 square-foot bedroom. One set was used and there are just two people on sets. Almost all of the props and costumes were made by Vasyl and things he found in his kitchen and the movie has a 1 dollar budget.

Vasyl says the main idea behind this is the following:

  1. It's very important to stay safe during Corona-time
  2. You can be creative even if you are locked in one room.

Without further ado, enjoy the amazing English-dubbed trailer for Apple-Man!

Howling Crater and WotC

As I mentioned in my review, I think An Occurrence at Howling Crater is a serious contender for best adventure of 2020. If you'd like to ow  it, you have two options. You can get the pdf here. If you'd like a physical copy I'm sure you could send a message to Planet X Games Facebook page and find out if they have any available.

Much like I did with Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride, I've decided to take this adventure and give my recommendations for incorporating it into WotC's big three settings: Eberron, Forgotten Realms, and Exandria/Critical Role.

Eberron
While there are several places you could place Howling Crater on Khorvaire, I think the most interesting would be Thrane. Obadiah Wotts has become a twisted holy man and that works great in the theocracy of Thrane. Perhaps Wotts and his clan see mutating radiation of the ship the true Silver Flame. Maybe they see the main church as heretics. Including these ideas really makes the adventure fit into the Eberron setting better.

Another thing to think about is how the artificers of House Cannith would view the technology of the crashed ship. I think they would seek it out and try to reverse engineer it with their magic.

Adventure Hooks
  • House Cannith, not wanting to risk their own in the dangerous crater, have enlisted the party to gather the strange technology from Howling Crater.
  • A strange sickness is affecting communities near the crater. Is it possible that the magic that plagues the Mournlands has infected the crater and surrounding areas?!
  • The Church of the Silver Flame has received reports of violent heretics. They recruit the party to investigate the reports and put down the false believers, if necessary.

Forgotten Realms
I'd place Howling Crater on the Sword Coast within a week's travel of Phandalin (the main hub of both the 5e Starter Set and Essentials Kit). The hills near the Swords Mountains between the High Road and Long Road. In the Realms, the degenerate Wotts Clan originally inhabited the Neverwinter Woods before vile patriarch moved the clan to the crater.

Adventure Hooks
  • The depredations have gained the attention of the various factions in the North (even the self-serving Zhentarim) and they must be stopped by any means necessary. You can further tailor this to factions presented in your party. The crater is a blight that the Emerald Enclave would love to see cleansed. It's presence affects the stability of communities and the Lord's Alliance can't have that. The Order of the Gauntlet can't let such a foul place go unchecked. The Harpers basically agree with the previous factions, plus a Harper agent could go missing while investigation the crater. Finally, the Zhent don't like the disruption to trade the Wotts cause.
  • Word of strange technology in the crater has spread. The nation of Lantan, followers of Gond the Wonderbringer are definitely interested. This could also draw in their allies, the drow of Bregan D'aerthe.
Exandria
On Wildemount, the Dwendalian Empire is the perfect place for the crater. I'd place it in southwest part of the Marrow Valley (maybe near the Ashkeeper Peaks). If you want to make it a colder wasteland you could also place it in the norther, near the tribes of Shadycreek Run. These options works best if you want to keep the Wotts Clan human. If your game is set in the Kryn Dynasty, I'd make the family mutant orcs.

A great way to explain why nothing has been about Howling Crater until this point is have the common believe that the crater was created by the divine clashes of the Calamity. Of course it wasn't, but the threat of divine magic unchecked and unholy abominations would definitely keep folks from exploring it.

Adventure Hooks
  • Dwendalian Empire -The crater mutants' actions have begun to affect nearby community in the Empire. With the war against the Kryn going on, soldier can't be dispatched to deal with them. A starosta has hired the party to investigate.
  • Dwendalian Empire -The strange machines of the crater are of interest to the gnomes of Hupperdook. Could this technology be incorporated into war machines for use against the Kryn?
  • Kryn Dynasty - An unruly clan of strange orcs have been disrupting war effort with the depredations. They have been targeting members of the faith of the Luxon. This cannot stand.

The Gruubhuuber

Here is your first taste (pun intended) of the classes of Warlords of Flavortown. the Gruubhuuber. The zine will have light vehicle rules that will be built around saving throws (which is why the class gets bonuses).

Gruubhuuber

You are a delivery specialist. No one can drive like you and you know if you want to keep your head to  make sure the Warchef’s food gets to them in 30 minutes or less.

Feed the Machine: Gruubhuuberss know how to push a vehicle beyond its normal limits. They can make a machine vehicle move at 1.5 times it’s max speed for 1d6 rounds minutes. After this time they must make a save for the machine. If the saving throw fails the machine breaks down and 10 minutes must be taken to repair it. If the save is a natural 1 the vehicle explodes, dealing 6d6 damage to everyone in 30 ft (successful save reduces damage by half).

Journey to Beryl's Reach

Journey to Beryl's Reach is is a new adventure for 2-5 5E characters of level 6. Unlike most adventures, it's designed to be played without a DM. This Limitless Adventures second module of this nature and know their quality and writing style, I'm sure they've learned from the first.

If you'd like to check out how their DM-less adventures play, check out this demo from their first adventure of this nature here. There are three non-retailer tiers. You can get the print and play version, premium boxed set version, or combo of premium boxed sets for both DM-less adventures. Personally, my money is on that one. It can be hard to get a large group together and these will be a nice alternative.

I own five Limitless adventure products and I love each and every one of them. These cats make quality gaming material and are really cool. You should definitely check this one out.

A Mother Class?

First off I want to say Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

I was sitting here thinking about representations of mothers in rpg. SURVIVE THIS!! Zombies! 2nd Edition is the only rpg I'm aware of that takes the idea of a mother and turns it into a class (technically the Mother To Be). Mechanically they're really cool. They are experts at ranged combat (because what momma to be wants to risk the life of their unborn child) and other characters can bonus to die rolls that involve protecting her. This makes sense because they are symbols of help in the post-apocalypse.

You can get your own copy of the gorgeous Kickstarted hardcover version here. It's currently on sale and would be a great companion to Survive This - Fantasy, which launches on Kickstarter in two days. Go here and click "Notify Me" to stay updated on that awesome project!.

Happy Mother’s Day

Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the release of Friday the 13th and today is Mother’s Day so this song parody by my favorite band, Ice Nine Kills, is very appropriate.

Are You Ready To Travel Fieri Road?!

Here's a teaser for a Lone Bards project I'm working on:

The world that you know is gone. The Franchise Kings and Queens battled the Master Warchefs and the results blew everything to bits in nuclear fieri and eldritch cuisine. Now the surviving Warchefs rule their own restaurant fortresses. You are no mere diner though...

You are a Gruubhuubber, making your way through the twisted landscape to deliver food and resources to your Warchef and his allies.
You are a Po’ Boy, and with your Ass Kickin’ Sauce you rage at your Warchef’s enemies in hopes of earning a spot on the Wall of Fame.
You are a clever Spiceraider, using subterfuge to get what the Warchef needs.

You are a Kitchen Witch, and one day you will use your gourmet magic to rival the Warchefs.

Warlords of Flavortown will be a standalone zine/game built using Swords & Wizardry Continual Light. I'm working on the draft now. I have a lot of ideas jotted down and a few of the classes are done.

Sedgwick

I was lucky enough to snag a free copy of Leighton Conner's comic Sedgwick recently. It really enjoyed it. I'm a huge fan of his art style and apparently also his writing style. Sedgwick is connected to a larger universe featuring the Laser Brigade. If Leighton's name sounds familiar it's because he's the creator of Akashic Titans and co-writer of Leopard Women of Venus (along with my friend Josh Burnett).

If you'd like to learn about Laser Brigade you can visit www.laserbirgade.thecomicseries.com,

If you want to check out other stuff Leighton has done, check out www.leightonconner.com.

If you'd like to contact Leighton and find out how to get your own copy of Sedgwick you can email him at l8onconnor at gmail dot com.

Of course I want to leave y'all with some gamer content so here's DCC/MCC stats for the titular alien.

Punluvin’, Valor Knight Librarian

I wanted to turn myself into a Valor Knight so I did. Feel free to add Punluvin' to your game as a Support npc. Note I rolled the stats and created him as a level one character and then leveled him up to four. I want to actually play this character some day and will get someone to do art, until then here's a pic of his vehicle form.

Coming Soon: SURVIVE THIS FANTASY

On May 12th Bloat Games is launching their next Kickstarter, Survive This Fantasy. The game will be fully compatible with other books in the Survive This line. That means you can include foul necromancers in your Zombies! games, elves into Vigilante City, and have your DP&D teens investigate a mysterious Djinn.

I have a confession. When Eric first mentioned doing something that like a year or two ago I felt a bit "meh" about the idea. Survive This is already OSR and there are so many great D&D retroclones if you want to play that. However. after seeing what Eric has done with this game I take all that back. This isn't just another D&D clone. It feels more like Palladium Fantasy in tone and a lot of races and classes not seen in D&D.

I was fortunate enough to be involved with this book (along with several amazing game writers and friends).  The art is being done by Phil Stone (of Valor Knights) and the always awesome Diogo Nogueira. You aren't going to want to miss this one. You can check out a preview of the project here. If you hit notify then Eric has said you get Advantage on your next d20 roll!

Valor Knights vs. Kong

In the last few weeks I finally watched Bumblebee and Godzilla: King of Monsters. I really enjoyed both flicks. I also read and reviewed Fainting Goat Games Champions of the Electrocube War. In that Valor Knights supplement a new class is presented that allows players to create colossal characters. This got me thinking, why not have giant robots fight kaiju? This is my first attempt at statting an established giant monster for the system. The stats look slightly different than the ones in Valor Knights because their isn't a Kaiju class. That being said, you can still use these with no problems.

Music Monday - El Mando

Here's another Marty Robbins and Mandalorian mash-up, this time with El Paso.

Music Monday - Big Mandalorian Iron

Enjoy May the 4th with this delightful mash-up of The Mandalorian and Marty Robins classic song, Big Iron.

Music Monday - The Takeo Ischi Cinematic Universe (Part I)

I've decided that the next three Music Monday posts will be devoted to the yodeling animal master, Takeo Ischi. This week I give you the first chapter of the trilogy (with remix), as well as stats for Takeo and Attack Chicken.

This isn't the first time I've mentioned this video. Takeo and his attack chicken have already received the Lamentations of the Flame Princess treatment.

Master Takeo Ischi
Armor Class: 13
Hit Dice: 3
Move: 12
Actions: 1
Attack: Punch (1)
Special: Can speak with and control animals, Transformational Yodel
Bonuses: +5 to Music rolls
Morale: 10
HDE: 2

Takeo Ischi is the compassionate wandering hero known as the Chicken Yodeler. Despite his moniker he can communicate with all animals (he just thinks chickens are the best). He knows mystical techniques that can temporarily transform ordinary animals into anthropomorphic warriors (among other things). He can also use his yodel to allow others to speak different languages.

Chicken Ninja
Armor Class: 15
Hit Dice: 5
Move: 15
Actions: 2
Attack: Unarmed (1d6)
Special: Limited Transformation
Bonuses: +5 to Attack, +2 to Damage
Morale: 10
HDE: 5

The Chicken Ninja can only stay in his battle form for 10 minutes after Ischi stops his transformational yodel.

Next week we will witness the glory of cock and a swine.

The Kaiju Are Coming!

On May 11 the mad cultists of Planet X Games are launching their next grindhouse adventure...

ESCAPE FROM SKULLCANO ISLAND!!!

Watch this trailer and get hyphy!

It's no secret that I love PX Games. I've reviewed Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride and An Occurrence at Howling Crater. I've also discussed how to include Jungle Tomb in three of WotC's most popular settings (and will do the same for Howling Crater soon). I have no doubts that this adventure will be of the same caliber of those masterpieces of grindhouse style.

To be notified when the game launches, follow Levi on Kickstarter (plus the homies has great tastes and will help you discover some dope projects).

Post-Apocalyptic Job Centre

This is a pretty humorous short film that seems oddly relatable.

Cybertron War (Rescored)

I recently watched Bumblebee for the first time. It was a fun and heartwarming nostalgia trip and definitely the best live action Transformers foray. Hell, the first three minutes of the movie are better than the rest of the franchise combined. How do you make this amazing opening even better? You rescore it with the theme from the classic Transformers animated movie.

If this doesn't make you want to play a Valor Knights game, nothing will! Also, shout out to Doug of Victory Condition Gaming for sharing this with me.

Champions of the Electrocube War Volume 1

Champions of the Electrocube Wars is a new Valor Knights expansion by Fainting Goat Games. It features artwork from the talented Jacob Blackmon and presents a new class and 8 (or 13 depending on how you look at it) new Valor Knights and Chaos Lords. For a low price (currently 1.50) this is what you get:

  • Gestalt (Class) - a giant robot made up of several smaller ones (like Devestator and the Contructicons), the class is strong, packs a big punch, can take a lot of damage, but is really easy to hit
  • Flyer (VK) - heroic soldier and warrior, definitely has a Master Chief vibe in design
  • Gearbox (VK) - inventor and warrior, wants to create something that will end the war
  • Nitro-Strike (VK) - hacker, grafiti artist, and mini-bot, she's probably my favorite new Valor Knight
  • Mega-Hitch (VK) - rural mechanic and support
  • Victor Alpha (VK) - librarian turned leader, you know I love this combination
  • Omega-Zed (CL) - former friend of Victor Alpha and Leader of a chapter of Chaos Lords
  • Tiamat (CL) - the five chromatic members of the Dragon Legion make up this terrifying gestalt
  • Tombstone (CL) - cruel wannabe warlord and support
If you plan on playing Valor Knights, I HIGHLY recommend picking up this pdf to help flesh out your world. The characters are all interesting, Jacob's art is great, and the new class is really fun (though I think it makes a better villain class than hero one).
