Character Creation Challenge - Day 31

This is a few days late because honestly wasn't sure what to do for the last few days. Since I've been showing Bloat Games love, I thought I'd do another character for Destination: Uncharted. I present you with Jimmy, a classic kid sidekick for your exploration needs.

Music Monday - The Party Isn't Over

JTMusic just released a new music video based on the new Five Nights At Freddy's game, Security Breach.

I really like what I've seen about the new game, especially since Freddy is a good guy in this one and sort of serves as a protective mech to the child protagonist (a big inspiration for Attack-a-Lope).

The truth is something more complex. Attack-a-Lope is an advanced version of Jupiter Jackelope from a possible future. Ten year old, Scott Afton's world was torn apart in a concerted effort by Earth's villains to take over the world. His father was a brilliant scientist and member of the resistance. He modified a Jupiter Jackelope animatronic to serve as a suit of protective power armor. Scott inherited his father's mechanical skills and intellect. His home was attacked by minions of the local villain warlord, which led to an explosion of his father's lab. Though he's not sure what exactly happened, Scott woke up in the past with his suit a few years before the villainous coup. He's currently formulating a plan to stop his future from occurring.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 28

Today's definitely not a Transformer was made for Valor Knights: The Electrocube War. Instead of using one of the classes from the book, I'm using a class I created for it, Van-Pire.

Emo

Evade: 12
HD: 12
HP: 15
Armor Points: 4
Level: 1
Class: Van-Pire
Vehicle Form: Hearse

  • Charm - Emo can charm other Techtrillion (or other cybernetic being) that looks into his eyes/headlights. Target must make CM + Int vs DC 11or be under control of Emo for 1d4 rounds. During this time it does the will of Emo. Target under control makes saves to this ability at Disadvantage. A target that resists this ability is immune to it for 24 hours.
  • Daylight Lock - Emo cannot transform into bipedal form during the day. He also suffers Disadvantage on physical rolls during the daytime.
  • Electrocube Drain - has no ranged weapon, any damage dealt via Emo's claws and fangs heal him the same amount of Hit Points. Bite attacks are made at Disadvantage to any target that isn't restrained/unconscious/charmed. Against those targets an attack roll isn't needed. Damage dealt by cyberfangs can't be healed during combat.

Background

Emo is the younger brother of elder van-pire, Dragula. Unlike his dark brother, Emo is youthful  and gregarious. While initially mistrusted by the Valor Knights, he's proven to be a heroic soldier and asset in the Electrocube War.

Reintroducing... The Web-Archivist!

I paid for a commission of art for this guy a few years ago and never got it. A few days ago I asked my gaming and creative brother, Dave Coppoletti, if he'd illustrate my Spiderson, the Web-Archivist. He did a fantastic job, so I thought I'd repost the stats (with some slightly tweaked lore) along with the new art.

-------------------

The Spider-Person of Earth 740  goes by the hero moniker, Web-Archivist. J.R. was a small-town librarian, excited when he scored a position at a major metropolitan library. It took him a bit to adjust to city life. Folks seemed colder and less receptive to others then they did where he grew up. This didn't deter him though. He worked hard to establish programs to help the youth and give them a safe place to learn and just be kids.

One fateful day, during a summer reading program, his life changed forever. That afternoon the performer, known as The Spider Guy, brought one his newest acquisitions. Unbeknownst to both of them, this spider was actually an escaped genetically engineered spider. It got out of it's cage, bit J.R., then died.

The bite gave him abilities he never had. He was stronger and more agile. These traits weren't superhuman level, but they gave him the ability to keep up with some professional athletes, despite his heavy frame. He could climb walls. In addition, he could naturally shoot webs from his wrists. Finally he gained some sort of spider-sense, that warned him when danger was approaching.

Combining his new abilities with his drive to do better and help his community, he created the costumed persona of Web-Archivist. He is a reserve Avenger and feels that he's primarily vigilante support. That being said he'll always step up and answer the call when needed.

When not saving the city, he spends his time working at the Metropolitan library and spending time with his cat, Trixie

Character Creation Challenge - Day 25

I decided to take my idea from yesterday, that my cat Trixie, was a speedster super-pet and translate it to Vigilante City. I did this by making her a Vigilante City Super Speedster, but also giving there the Cosmos Cat race from the What Shadows Hide Cthulhu Sourcebook.

Background

On her first day on Earth, the young Cosmos Cat named Trixie found herself unwittingly in the middle of a battle between the vigilante Web-Archivist and the evil super-speedster Deadly Dash. The hero saved Trixie from harm but in the conflict somehow she was imbued with a portion of the speedster's powers. After the battle, Web-Archivist adopted the feisty feline and took her home. Though she was born in another dimension, the Cosmos Cat has grown accustomed to life on Earth. She uses her new speed to help keep her community safe, though she keeps her true nature secret from her "silly human."

The Oyster Ditch Review

The Oyster Ditch! is a totally inappropriate, sexually deviant  third-party pamphlet adventure for Mork Borg. Written by Mike Murray it consists of an adventure site, a magical McGuffin, and new optional class.

As you can see there is a mention of the X-Card on the cover and that's a definite need. The adventure is filled with some fucked up sex things. The suggestion is that it be presented like "Morty being molested by King Jellybean and less like 'that tunnel scene' in Irreversible." Even with that tone in mind, you need to make sure your players are ok and know they can use the X-Card if things go to far.

The Oyster Ditch is ran by the corpulent Marquess de Bastaille, who's recently gained control the Idol of Guilty Pleasures, an artifact that can bring one's wildest sexual fantasies to life. Unfortunately for all involved, the Marquess has a very wild mind indeed. The adventure has a d2 chart as to why the characters have "cum" to the den of inequity. The place can corrupt the purest souls and you may gain a violation for experiencing it. And let me tell you, these violations are really vile kinks, such as vorarephilia and coprophilia. There is also a d4 random encounter chart. The Oyster Ditch contains 10 weird sex-type rooms. These all have strange sexual creatures that, to be honest, are really ridiculous.

In addition to the encounter locations with foes, there are two new magic items: Idol of Guilty Pleasures and Pearl Jam. There are also stats for an std, the Rot. Two new mystic scrolls are also available: Le Petite Mort and Beautiful Agony.

Finally, the Ecstasy Aunt, is a playable sex worker class. It contains a chart with reasons the character becomes one, as well a random abilities chart. Of them, the phallic mourning wood club is probably my favorite.

This adventure is fucked up, juvenile, and pretty entertaining. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you have an off sense of humor, it can be fun. I liked it and you can get the pdf here.

Music Monday - Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Recently I've come to realise the the theme form the new TMNT series is a bop!. While I didn't initially care for the animation, I think I'm going to give the series a shot. Here's the thing, even if I don't like the look or enjoy the series, it doesn't really matter because this series is made for the latest generation of Turtles fans, not me. I think that's a lesson that can be taken by a lot of fandoms when they complain about the latest iteration of their childhood favorites. Sorry, wasn't originally going to get on my soap box, but it seemed like an appropriate time. Anyway, check out the theme.

He and his friends had many encounters, including an incident that saw Reggie resurrecting his crush, Donna, as a living dead girl. Things got even weirder when he contracted lycanthropy from a seductive exchange student. Weirder still when his best friend/long time crush discovered that she was prophesied to join an ancient monster hunter society. He helped her defend your town and somehow made it to graduation. Later, Kyle went to live with his aunt in Louisiana to attend undergrad studies. After a few semesters (and a bit of trouble), he decided to go to Seattle to watch over Cass. She doesn't know he's in the city, and he plans on keeping it that way for as long as possible. He's started working at a vet's office. They let him crash in the back room in exchange for taking care of the animals and cleaning up. It's not glamourous, but it brings back memories of time with his mom as a kid, so it's alright.

The pair teamed up with other local kids to stop an evil genie from taking over the town (and eventually the world). She recently moved to Seattle with her "uncle," drawn their by rumors of an increased supernatural presence. During this time she discovered her bisexuality and has begun championing the LGBTQ cause. She is also a freelance journalist for a local paper.

Hit Points Press Big Bad Booklet Patreon - Daniel and The Conqueror Worm

For a short period last year I was a Patreon supporter of Hit Point Press. Each month they create a new big bad boss to send against your D&D 5e party. These are presented in gorgeous pdfs. The pdfs are around 14 pages, but only 8 or so include actual content. They also create monster stat and magic item stat cards. There are three tiers:

  • Bronze ($5) - Pdfs of the cards and big bad booklet
  • Silver ($10) - As above but you also get VTT assets and STLs
  • Gold ($15) - As above but you also get a printed Big Bad Booklet (which ships free worldwide)
I backed at the Gold Tier for a month. I had some things come up and couldn't continue backing. The content created by the Patreon is top notch. The artwork is fantastic, layout is crisp, and the big bads are really interesting. The turn around time does take a bit though, if you're going for the print version. This is understandable, but could be a deal breaker for some. For example, I was a supporter in September. I just got the print copy of that month's big bad yesterday. I'm not saying that's too long, but if you are looking for a physical turnaround on your support, you're going to be waiting months. Personally, the size of the combination of the booklet size, price, and wait time makes it a bit to pricey for me. The Bronze tier is definitely worth the price and if you have a 3D printer or do a lot of VTT stuff, the Silver tier is also a good deal.

I'm going to review the two I've seen.

The first Big Bad Booklet, Daniel, is available as a free pdf. Daniel is a failed flesh golem. He's a mass of flesh that seeks to give the gift of a blissful joy. Daniel's twisted mind doesn't understand his condition or how living creatures feel. This inevitably leads to him inflicting "joy" on all he meats. Physically the creature is a large fleshy ooze and stats wise has is a mix of a classic ooze and a flesh golem. He's a gross and challenging (challenge rating 15) foe.

The Conqueror Worm is a gargantuan magical flatworm with an apocalyptic vision. Created by druidic ritual designed to defend their lands, this hivemind creature sees all humanoids as invaders to its lands. It can create tiny parasitic wormlings that dwell in humanoids. When they mature  they burst forth from their hosts chest. The worm's ultimate goal is to affect all humanoids and have it's spawn burst forth at the same time, wiping them out. In addition to stats for the main worm (challenge rating 17), there are also stats for young wormlings, a swarm of wormlings, and mature wormlings. I really like this big bad. The whole thing has a Kyuss/Age of Worms vibe, but without the undead and much more insidious. It would be very easy to build a whole campaign around this big bad.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 20

Today's character was created for the third-party sci-fi Mork Borg setting, Vast Grimm.

3M-0

Agility 7 (-2)
Presence 9 (+0)
Strength 13 (+1)

Toughness 12 (+0)

HP 16

Attack: 19 Sharp Throwing Bones (d4)
Armor: none

Abilities
Speed Dealer - can produce d3 injectable Nanotech healing cartridges per day (d8 HP). These lose effectiveness after 24 hours.

Credits: 0
Favors: 1
Equipment/Possessions: coin from fallen society, med kit (13 uses, stops bleeding, heals d4 HP),  electroshield (works as battery to charge other items, absorbs 1 HP damage from an energy  attack up to 10 [each HP = 2 charges])

Background: The databanks surrounding 3M-0 early days of existence have been erased. It was found by a medical ship and had healing Nanotech added to its programming. Unfortunately for 3M-0 the ship was attacked and taken over by the wurms.  3M-0 survived the encounter (though it now has random sparks sputtering from orifices) and is alone. It now sees all insects as wurms and smushes them when possible. To its knowledge there are no other bots like it. It searches anyways though, hoping one day to find another of its kind. It is very sad, very emo. Because it can create healing stims, it doesn't normally have issues finding work and transport.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 19

Here's another 5e character for the challenge. Lorga is a non-binary orc transmuter. You can see their character sheet here.

Background

Lorgru III was born the son of Lorgru II, King of Many-Arrows. A descendent of King Obould Many-Arrows, founder of the orcish kingdom, the birth was seen as a blessing to the kingdom. However, Lorgru was an unhappy child. Instead of worshipping Gruumsh or another of the male orcish gods, the young half-orc took to worshiping Luthic the Cave Mother. Highly intelligent, Lorgru's father allowed the young orc to learn the ways of the Weave. When a younger brother was born, Lorgru convinced the king to make the newborn orc his named heir. The half-orc then left the kingdom to kingdom to learn the ways of transmutation magic and change. Now going by Lorga, the wizard has begun exploring who they truly are. The young wizard often varies in appearance, being masculine one day, feminine the next, and androgynous another.

The Burtonverse

I love D.L. Massey's art. He's super talented. Here is his interpretation of what the Justice League would look like if made in the Batman '89 continuity.

5th Evolution: Carbide City #2 Review

You may have noticed that I like superheroes. You may also have noticed I like Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. But did you notice that I like when the two are combined? If you are a regular reader, than of course you do.

Today I wanted to review 5th Evolution: Carbide City #2.  You can read my review of the first issue. To utilize this book properly, you need a copy of it, because not all of the genre rules are repeated.

The artwork is phenomenal. Clash and her Demo Demonettes (featured in Issue #1) take on the new heroic archetypes. This, like every 5Evo book, is followed by a short comic that sets up the adventure contained within. There's a nice throwback to issue one in the second panel as it features the the villains the heroes faced in the last issue. It also has a cereal box with the unnamed hero that graces its cover.

The adventure centers around a feral evo, Poe, has been framed. Poe is an ally of the characters and they must clear his name. This brings them into conflict with other evos. If I remember correctly, Poe, is the a character played by author, Andrew Hand.

The following section contains 16 different locales in Carbide City for your players to visit. These range from parks, sports stadiums, to city hall. The locations are given history and game play information, as well as three adventure hooks. In addition, each location has other relevant gaming content. If there's an important npc or henchman/mooks associated with it, they'll be given stats. Some locations also have resources, such as tech and magic items to use. If you backed the first Kickstarter, a lot of this content appeared in one of the stretch goal for Carbide City.

Setting info is followed by new rules. We're give more resource information (as classic 5e money rules aren't used in Carbide City). Advanced Equipment rules are also presented. This section discusses how to make supertech by adding some different tweaks to existing 5e magic items. This is a quick and dirty system, but it absolutely works.

As mentioned in Carbide City #1, pc's in Carbide City are created using archetypes. These archetypes are classified as Tier 6 in the setting, which are the equivalent of 12th level characters (CR 5). The new archetypes presented are:

  • Aerial - flying warrior, examples: Hawkman, Angel
  • Changeling - shapechanging hero (though limited to humanoid forms), examples: Mystique, Copycot
  • Elementalist - evo with a body made of or potentially coated in powerful energy, example: Static, Ice Man, Human Torch
  • Force Field Fabricator - hero that can create protective invisible wards, example: Invisible Woman
  • Verdent Hero - hero primarily made of plant matter, examples: Swamp Thing and Groot
  • Power Suit Pilot - warrior piloting a suit of power armor, examples: War Machine, Hardware
The new archetypes are followed by optional rules to update the archetypes from Issue #1 to tier 5 (level 20 characters/CR10). There is a short discussion on why this can be fun for a short time, but can be problematic in the long term.

Evos don't level up in the classic sense, but they do gain advancements (buffs, bonuses, and abilities) when they reach milestones. The original archetypes are given seven new advancements. There are also seven general advancements that can be taken by any hero. Finally Team Advancements are presented. These optional advancements are pretty cool. Instead of taking individual advancements, the super team can decided to take a team one. These allow characters or at least the teammates that decided to contribute new traits and abilities to help their. Think Fastball Special.

If you can't tell, I love this one. The book hasn't been fully released yet. Kickstarter backers have it in pdf form and are still waiting on physical copies. After all backers pledges have been filled, they'll put copies up on their site. Until then, you should pick up the other books in the 5Evo line.

You Can't Housetrain An Eagle, Dude.

I loved James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. I think it was the perfect blend of action, humor, and absurdity. It was also really heartfelt at times and captured the feel of the team (which next to the Titans is my favorite comic book team). I was really excited to see a spin-off series, Peacemaker, was being made. The first three episodes dropped last week and I'm loving it.

I didn't just want to recommend it without giving you something gaming related, so here are stats for Peacemaker's sidekick, Eagly.

Music Monday - New 52 Mixtape

Honestly I've probably shared these before, but I don't care because they are good and deserve another listen. About a decade ago Dr. Awkward released his New 52 Mixtape. It was only four tracks, but damn was it good. Check it out.

Dark Places & Demogorgons Class Compendium Review

SURVIVE THIS!! Dark Places & Demogorgons Class Companion is the latest Kickstarter from my friends at Bloat Games. It launches Tuesday and you can help by going to the above and clicking "Notify on Launch." Eric was cool enough to give pdf previews for reviewers. The book/pdf is massive for a DP&D book, coming in at 212 pages. It is a compilation of every class released for the game thus far. Not only does it bring them all together, it updates and streamlines them, in addition to taking every class to level 10. Early classes only had five levels, so there's a lot of extra goodies. In addition, there are a ten brand new classes! The character creation rules have also been given a handy quick guide. The skill rules have been clarified and updated. All skills from previous releases have been included (including martial arts skills from Martial Arts Mayhem). There is an updated gear list, with  equipment, weapons, and armor. Finally the Otherside is given several rules and charts.

Being the Class Compendium that is the bulk of the book. Most of the classes fall in the standard class section. There are 53 classes in the basic class section. Eight of ten new all-new classes are here. Of these classes, I think it's pretty obvious the Horror Connoisseur is my favorite, since I used it to stat myself out for the Character Creation Challenge this year. The Sweet Baby is probably my other favorite new class. This class lets you play a kid that's truly wholesome. They are so wholesome that the world doesn't affect them like it does everyone else. Their innocence must be protected. I think this sounds like a really fun class to play.

Seven magic classes are presented. These are some classic tropes here. White and black witches, nature witch, teen wizard, and voodoo practitioner. Mechano-Mage and Mystical Ghost Hunter also appear for something out of the norm. Twenty familiar options and rules for potions are also included. Finally this section includes 18 new minor spells and 11 major. Some (probably all) have music related names. Of these my favorites are Cherry Bomb, Madhouse, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, and Under Pressure.

The last class section details Psion Classes. Rules for manifesting psionic abilities are given (with obligatory chart. There eight classes in this section, including two all-new ones. The Animal Wrangler is a new class uses their mind powers to speak to and control animals. The other new class, The Forgotten, has a strange psychic phenomenon that causes others to forget them.

If you play Dark Places & Demogorgons I would say that this and The Cryptid Manual are the first books you need to grab after you pick up the core book. I already own most of the content, but I love having it all streamlined and collected in one place. Plus the new stuff is great too. If I had any critiques its that the layout is kind of boring and artwork isn't too common. However, these aesthetic things don't bug me because this book is more of a tool that something to just sit and flip through. The kind of boring style makes it a lot less distracting and easier to use. Again, if you play DP&D, back this one when it launches.

But The Cream Will Rise To The Top, Ooh Yeah.

I wish I could claim the glory for this one, but it's not mine. It's just something I found on Facebook. Not sure the original source. If I find that out, I update and give them credit.

Of course this isn't the only 5e wrestling content I've created or shared. Earlier this month I posted a link to Incedendio, a Maztican luchador I created. Take on Dwayne "The Rock Golem" Johnson and MJF in the squared circle. If you defeat them you might come across the Belt of Ho-Gaan (and then listen to Macho's Hogan dis track). Finally find out if Macho is a better patron than Chris Jericho.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 13

Today's character was created 5th Evolution: White Chapel Vigilance Committee. She was inspired by a post I read about someone needing to make a movie about the sex-workers of London banding together to hunt down Jack the Ripper. I want to watch that movie.

Abigail Lane was born on the streets of London. She's a "soiled dove," but she has no issues with it. The way she sees it, she sells her body a lot less than the poor sods working in the factories. In addition to being a pretty one, she's also quick and has picked up some roguish abilities. She's not above stealing from her johns.

Tired of seeing her friends butchered and nothing done about it, she's sharpened her blade and started her own hunt.
