October Horror Movie Challenge - Tokyo Ghoul (2017)

Synopsis: Bookworm Ken Kaneki's life is changed when he receives an organ donation from a ghoul, members of a flesh-eating race that blend in with humanity. This turns him into a human-ghoul hybrid. He finds sanctuary in Anteiku, a cafe run by things he once considered monsters. Targeted by anti-ghoul government forces he must discover what he truly is and help his new family.

The Good: I'm a big fan of the anime and I think the live action adaptation did an excellent job of adapting the first half of season 1 to the big screen. The characters are interesting, the story is engaging, and the effects are pretty good.

The Bad: It works for the sake of a movie but there are certain aspects of ghoul culture and characters that are better fleshed out in the anime than in the film.

Final Thoughts: This is a really good anime to live action adaptation. I highly recommend it, though if you watch it, please do so with subtitles. The dub just sounds really off.

In Your Game: You're going to gain notoriety really fast, but if you'd like to play a ghoul in Vigilante City here's a mutation that lets you.

Ghoul

You gain a +2 to your strength and dexterity or con. You now crave human flesh. You can sense humans by sent and heal 1d6 HP for every round you spend eating their flesh. Your body has a predatory organ known as a kagune. It has one of the following abilities:

  • +2 to AC when active
  • Can make 50' ranged attack dealing 1d4+1 damage
  • Can make a melee attack (with a reach of 10') dealing 1d6 damage

Mutation: Your eyes change when you are excited or hungry. Your sclera turn black and your irises become red. You can no longer stomach human food (other than coffee) and must succeed a critical saving throw to keep food down (which you will still violently throw up a at a later time).
