Ash Wednesday - Evil Dead 2: The Roleplaying Game

I haven't done an Ash Wednesday post in a while, but seemed liked a good time to do one because the Evil Dead 2: The Roleplaying Game projected launched on Kickstarter today. Already funded, this will be a 250 page hardcover supplement and campaign setting for 5th edition D&D. I know not every concept needs a D&D 5e adaptation, but I'm all in for this. I love all things Evil Dead and I love 5e. While Army of Darkness makes more sense as a D&D setting, from what I've seen Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn is the easiest to get the license for. 

The book will contain the following:

• 12 New Subclasses: Hair-Trigger Barbarian, College of Bravado Bard, Sycophant Domain Cleric, Circle of Decay Druid, Steeljaw Fighter, Warrior of the Phantom Limb Monk, Oath of Interference Paladin, Illusory Terrain Ranger, Liar Rogue, Cursed Bloodline Sorcerer, Warlock of the Necronomicon, Wizard of the Occult
• Blood Splatter Rules
• Necronomicon Curses
• New Items and Feats 
• Deadite Creature Stat Blocks
• Survival Campaign Mode
• Limb-loss and Grating Rules
• Necronomicon Spells

According to the video the game will feature PvP elements (as some characters might secretly be Deadites) and will be compatible with the D&D 2024 rules set. I want to give the video props because the throwback to the film it does made me smile. There are a few pledge levels. Honestly I see the pdf or hardcover/pdf combo being the most popular. There's some cool stuff if you've got the green though (including GM Screen, dice bag, dice, and dice tray).

If you want a taste of the rules there's an 6 page preview. It introduces some the corruption rules. A new 7th attribute, Virtue, is included and your descent to becoming a Deadite is directly tied to it. We're presented with a taste of the blood splatter rules and two modern items, shotguns and chainsaws. Want to see one of the new subclasses? Well you're in luck because we're presented with the Path of the Hair-Trigger for Barbarians. It's a shotgun-centric barbarian path. I love it. Finally, we get a sample foe, a mother f*cking Deadite Sasquatch.  These stats don't look like the new 2024 monster stats, but the format could change by the time the book is released. 

I'm stoked for this one. I know Evil Dead 2 Kickstarters don't have the best track record, but this one looks like its in good hands.

Ash Wednesday - Savini Ash

Dropping this Friday, Evil Dead: The Game, is a new co-op and PVP game. It looks fantastic and has characters from throughout the franchise. As a Collector's Edition bonus, the creators tasked horror legend Tom Savini to design and Ash skin for the game. This isn't his first foray into video game skin designs. I'm thinking about giving some things from the Evil Dead series the DCC treatment. I've started with taking the DCC Deadite stats a created years ago and revising them a bit. You can get a pdf of the image below here. 

Ash Wednesday - Evil Dead 2: Revenge of Hitler

Before the scammed money from fans and turned out to be crooks, Space Goat Productions had the license to Evil Dead 2 and made some really good comics. They also managed to make an Evil Dead story that wasn’t connected to Army of Darkness, but still allowed for it to exists at the same time. Since it’s Ash Wednesday I wanted to make a post, but I don’t have no content. Thought I’d share this one-shot’s cover and remind everyone that Punch A Nazi Week 2022 starts Sunday. Every day I will post 5e supers stats to a Nazi or Neo-Nazi villain. The bravest heroes need the most vile villains.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 12 (Ash Wednesday Edition)

Today's character was created by using 5th Evolution 80's Horror: Terror in the Tunnels. I've also not done an Ash Wednesday post in ages so I thought I'd combine the two. While I went ahead and gave him the axe and shotgun in stats, this is Ash at the beginning of the 1981 flick.

Review

I've reviewed this movie several times. It is one of my all time favorite movies and is one I put on when I want to get comfortable and relax for the night. Don't get me wrong, I love all of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead related content, but ultimately I think this Evil Dead is a better movie. Shiloh Fernandez's David is a handsome and likable (yet still flawed) protagonist. The character's love and guilt for his decisions come through. Lou Taylor Pucci's Eric (or Hipster Jesus as I liked to call him) is one of the most realistic horror protagonists. Yeah, he fucks up by reading the book, but he's the first to understand that there isn't a logical explanation for what's going on and he accepts the supernatural right away. Finally Jane Levy does an amazing job as Mia. Her demonic rants and scenes are just phenomenal. Don't get me wrong, Jessica Lucas and and Elizabeth Blackmore do fine jobs too, but they are more background characters as the film progresses. Fede Alvarez doesn't have a huge filmography, but he has become one of my favorites and is the reason I'm hesitantly excited for the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. 

I will say there is more I'd like to know. Who was the older man with the possessed daughter in the beginning. Who were the strange looking wildfolk?

A new Evil Dead video game drops later this year. It looks fantastic and unlike previous installments of the series, actually includes elements from Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and Ash vs The Evil Dead.
