R is for Reefer King

Sadly this post missed 4/20 by one day. The comically named Reefer King appeared in Dynamic Comics #16 (1945). His master plan was making marijuana cigarettes and forcing stores to sell them for a dime a piece to their regular customers. This story is ludicrous and I had to use the character. Unlike the other posts, can't think of any good connections to Bonne Nuit and Project Second Chance. If anything King or his company could be targeted by villains and the organization is sent to investigate.

Background
Nicknamed the Reefer King, Jake King has spent his entire life growing marijuana. King's true legal troubles began when his distribution partner, Murrray, persuaded him to be aggressive with his tactics to expand their customer base. Believing that there was nothing wrong with the substance Jack went along with his schemes. As these tactics grew in scope, King became bolder and bolder. This eventually led to his capture by Marxman I. Jack was arrested and went to prison. There he bettered himself and received two degrees. Once released he found that landscape was changing and recreational marijuana use was becoming more accepted (and potentially legal). Using family members as proxy, he lobbied for its legalization and because of the first major legal marijuana growers in the US. Now Jack uses the profits of his company to work on changing laws and getting individuals imprisoned for marijuana possession released.

  1. Given that a pack of regular coffin nails was under 25 cents back in 1945, I imagine 10 cents a joint would actually have been a pretty hard sell, especially with all the ludicrous propaganda and misinformation floating around back then.
