Not Your Typical Elf On A Shelf

Created by Steve Gerber, Elf with a Gun was a random and strange addition to the Defender's comic back in the 70's. They would randomly appear in a few panels, kill a random person or two, and disappear. The original, Melf, was hit by a truck and killed off a few years later. He never directly confronted the Defenders. Later elves, Hrelf and Relf, would be be introduced. While it was said they were serving the plan of the Tribunals, this was later discovered to be hoax. They have no connection to other elves of the Marvel universe, such as the Elves of Agard, Otherworld, or Weirdworld.

A character baring a striking resemblance to Elf with a Gun appeared in DC's Countdown to Mystery #8

In an interview Gerber said he introduced Elf with a Gun to show that the world can be a chaotic place and sometimes things just happen.
