Mushroom Gnome Review

Last month I backed the Mushroom Gnome Kickstarter. For two dollars backers got rules for playing this new race for DCC, OSE, ShadowDark, and Troika!.  Mushroom Gnomes are 2 ft tall fey-like creatures that tend fungal gardens in deep forests. They have no sex or gender (as humans conceive). They tend to be quiet and peaceful, though some of them are curious and seek adventure.

We know I love Dungeon Crawl Classics. The Mushroom Gnome is a race-as-class like other DCC races. They get d5 hit dice and can cast spells tied to nature. They have a tough hide and superior constitution. They can also hide well in forests. Unlike most DCC class, the Mushroom Gnome may only advance to level 5. There are also rules for 0-level Mushroom Gnomes and two starting occupations.

The Old-School Essentials Mushroom Gnome is presented in two ways. First we're given a demihuman class.  Their abilities are similar to the DCC version. They mention Divine Magic, but the section references Classic Fantasy: Magic and doesn't include a spell list or spells per day. Not sure if this is an omission or if I am just unfamiliar with how it works in OSE. There's also an advanced race write-up of Mushroom Gnomes if you wish to go that route. They excel at being clerics, druids, and thieves; though they can also be fighters and illusionists.

I don't know much about ShadowDark (other than it did ridiculously well on Kickstarter). The Mushroom Gnome is presented as a new ancestry for it. Their ancestral talent allows them then to extra sources of sustenance and protection from certain effects. 6 Mushroom Gnome backgrounds are presented.

Finally Troika! is a classic (from what I've seen) Troika! character option. You get the background, a few possessions, advanced skills, and a special ability.
