The Hanging Coffins of the Vampire Queen Noms

My friend (and party druid in my Storm King's Thunder game), Rich, posted a video on my Facebook page with a scary-good looking recipe. Bat wings, are grilled chicken wings that have been marinated in black food coloring and hot sauce and injected with Bloody Mary sauce. This gives them a creepy black outside and blood red meat. According to the recipe, they're black as night, hot as Hell. You can find the full recipe here.

Okay, looks interesting, but why am I posting this on a gaming blog. Well, if you couldn't tell by the title of the post, I think these would be great eats to make when running sessions of  +Mark Taormino's Maximum Mayhem Dungeon #1: The Hanging Coffins of the Vampire Queen. Sadly, I've not been able to finish the adventure, but my group and I had a blast for the parts we played through. You can find out what others thought of the adventure here and here.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015)

Synopsis: Set in between the events of the video games Dead Rising 2 and 3, report Chase Carter finds himself trapped a walled-in quarantine area when a zombie outbreak happens.

The Good: Rob Riggle is fucking inspired as Frank West. Sure he's Rob Riggle playing every other Rob Riggle character, but he's a damn good Frank. The movie is full of references to the video games. It was fun seeing all of the ridiculous homemade weaponry. I liked the new protagonist, Chase. He seems to fit into the Dead Rising mythos nicely.

The Bad: The acting in this movie isn't great. It's B at best. The plot has been done over and over.

Final Thoughts:  Ultimately this movie is a nice B zombie flick. However, if you're a fan of the Dead Rising video games you'll get quite a few laughs and nods out of the setting specific elements. You can watch the movie and it's sequel (which includes Dead Rising 2's Chuck Greene) on Crackle.

In Your Game: Here are stats for Frank West. I think he'd be a great cast member for an Army of Darkness game. He's covered wars, you know?

October Horror Movie Challenge - Zombie 2: The Dead are Among Us (1979)

Synopsis: A NY reporter follows a scientist's daughter to an island in the Caribbean that's been cursed with zombies.

The Good: The film opens with a shark fighting a zombie! Seriously, does it get much better than that. Also, the eye impalement scene still freaks me out.

The Bad: The acting is average and this is a splatter horror flick (which I know some people aren't in to).

Final Thoughts: This film is fun. It's definitely my favorite of Fulci's flicks.

In Your Game: T-Virus zombies aren't too different from the zombies presented in this film.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Freddy vs Jason (2003)

Synopsis: Freddy enlists the aid of Jason Vorhees to make the people of Elm Street remember him. Unfortunately, Jason gets too much attention and the icons of horror have a battle decades in the making.

The Good: I really like the final girl and there are some legit good kills and laughs in this one.

The Bad: The acting isn't great and some of the characters are cookie cutter stereotypes... but we expect that from these films, right?

Final Thoughts: This movie has a special place in my heart. While I've watched vampire movies all my life, this movie is the one made me fall in love with horror flicks. I can't really tell you what it is about it, but I just fell in love.

In Your Game: I've created several posts related to Freddy and Jason. Here's a quick masterlist:

Jaycee Vorhess (Lady Killers)
Frieda Krueger (Lady Killers)
The Dreamlands
Freddy Krueger
Dream Warrior Quality
Jason X
Jason Vorhees

Demon Cults, Secret Societies, and Operations that are Unfathomable

Just a reminder that the Demon Cults & Secret Societies Kickstarter from Kobold Press ends in a few days. This book will be for Pathfinder and 5th Edition. I've previous discussed the Kickstarter here. The project has unlocked several stretch goals.

I think this would also be a good place to mentioned Operational Unfathomable. Jason of The Dungeon Dozen and the Hydra Collective are putting together this gonzo underworld adventure and setting. A few stretch goals have been unlocked and the Odious Uplands, the realms above the underworld. The book has been written for Swords & Wizardry, but that means it'll be easier to convert to other versions of D&D. One of the stretch goals will be a DCC conversion, which sounds amazing to me. Check out the Kickstarter video for this and tell me that it doesn't sound awesome.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Killdozer (1974)

Synopsis: Construction workers on an isolated African isle must battle a bulldozer possessed by an alien entity.

The Good: Clint Walker and Robert Ulrich do a great job as the leads. The film was shot on location. The story is reminiscent of Maximum Overdrive, but came out a few years before the short story was released. In my opinion, it's much better than King's story.

The Bad: This is a 70's made for tv flick. It's a story, not a masterpiece. Also, I couldn't find a great print of the film, so viewing quality isn't the greatest.

Final Thoughts: This was kind of fun. It's definitely dated, but that's part of the charm. I want to pick up a copy of the Marvel comic based on the film.

In Your Game: Not really sure how to stat up a an alien-possessed bulldozer, so not much to work with here.

Move Your Dead Bones

Every so often, I like to remind the world that this is a thing. Move Your Dead Bones by Dr. Re-Animator is a bonus feature on Beyond Re-Animator. It's absolutely re-goddamn-diculous and that's why I love it.

So that this is still somewhat gaming related, I give you two quicksheets I made for Cinematic Unisystem.

Leagues of Cthulhu

Yesterday Triple Ace Games launched a Kickstarter for Leagues of Cthulhu.

What is Leagues of Cthulhu? It's the Lovecraftian add-on to Leagues of Adventure. Leagues of Horror gave us Gothic Victorian horror and now Leagues of Cthuhlu will gives us sanity-shattering cosmic horror. If you've been interested in Leagues of Adventure, Leagues of Horror, or Ubiquity in general this is a great way to get into the game. Every pledge level comes with a pdf of Leagues of Adventure and Leagues of Horror. As of now I'm backing at the Expedition Member level, though depending on how my funds are towards the end of the Kickstarter I might upgrade to Miskatonic University Freshman (since I missed out on the Leagues of Horror kickstarter).

October Movie Challenge - Inbred (2011)

Synopsis: Four juvenile delinquents and there caregivers wander into a world of pain while doing community service is Yorkshire, England.

The Good: I didn't care for this movie, but the practical effects were pretty good.

The Bad: This movie tries to be a horror comedy, but at times its too bloody dark to be funny. I think the ending was supposed to be funny, but I'm not sure. None of the protagonists are really likable. Oh and one of the townies is in black face.

Final Thoughts: Don't waste your time with this. I wasn't expecting much, but I like what I refer to as Hellbilly movies (Wrong Turn, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Texas Chainsaw Massacre). However, this wasn't nearly as good as any of those flicks.

In Your Game: Apparently even the UK has Hellbillies...

October Movie Challenge - The Neon Demon (2016)

Synopsis: Young Jesse moves to LA just after her 16th birthday to start her modelling career. She must deal with a creep photographer, ruthless vixens, and a seedy motel manager.

The Good: This movie is extremely stylish and filled with beautiful people.

The Bad: Do you like necrophila? No, well this movie has some.

Final Thoughts: I really liked the movie Drive, when I found out its director did a stylish looking horror movie, I was kind of excited to see it. The plot for this film is flimsy and the characters are weak.

In Your Game: There's not much gaming inspiration in this one.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (2005)

Synopsis: A group of college kids find a barrel of toxic sludge (Trioxin) and decide to what any intelligent folks would do and turn it into a rave drug.

The Good: Honestly, as stupid as it is I think the title and concept is kind of funny. The Russian guys are kind of funny. Plus the Tarman from the previous films has a cameo.

The Bad: The acting is horrible, the plot is stupid, and well it's just overall bad.

Final Thoughts: As bad as it is, it's not the worst zombie flick I've seen. It's not great, but it's watchable.

In Your Game:

Name: The Tarman
Motivation: Brains!!!!
Critter Type: Zombie
Attributes: Str 3, Dex 2, Con 2, Int 2, Per 3, Will 2
Ability Scores: Muscle 12, Combat 11, Brains 10

Curse of Strahd: Potions

Curse of Strahd: Potions is a one page pay what you want pdf on the Dungeon Masters Guild. It presents 7 Ravenloft themed potions. The powers provided by these concoctions often come at a price. They are as follows:

Moon Blood - You blood becomes acidic to vampires and undead that decide to bite you.

Wolf Eye's - You gain superior darkvision and sunlight sensitivity while under the effects of this potion.

Gallows Ichor - Weapons coated in this black ichor overcome damage reduction

Vistani Elixir - You gain advantage on all rolls for a few minutes and disadvantage on all rolls for a few days.

Corpseworm - This potion contains a centipede like creature that allows you to speak with a dead corpse, though after a few days a swarm of centipedes erupts from the corpse's mouth.

Morninglord's Tears - This potion can cure Lycanthrope from one that has not yet transformed, though doing ages the drinker.

Vial of Mist - This potion creates a 20ft sphere of mist.

These are all really cool and add a nice bit of flavor to Curse of Strahd. Pick it up and pass the creator a few silvers.

Six-Gun Gorilla

Six-Gun Gorilla is a public domain superhero. I created his using the the All Flesh and Terra Primate core books and Fistful o' Zombies.

O'Neil the Six-Gun Gorilla

O'Neil the gorilla was kidnapped as an infant and brought to America. He was raised by a kindly prospector named Bart Masters, who taught the ape to cook, clean, and load a gun. When Marsters is killed by a gang, O'Neil seeks revenge on the crew.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Dagon (2001)

Synopsis: Stock market tycoon Paul and his friends run into troubles off the coast of Spain. They got to a nearby town for help, but soon discover something is very wrong with residents of Imboca.

The Good: This is an interesting take on The Shadow Over Innsmouth. I like Macarena Gomez. She's really cute in a creepy way. I enjoy Ezra Godden too. He also appeared in Gordon's Dreams in the Witch House adaptation.

The Bad: This is classic Stuart Gordon Lovecraft. The effects are cheesy and the acting isn't great, but I think that adds to the charm.

Final Thoughts: This isn't a great movie, but I like it.

In Your Game:

Deep One Hybrid (2 Point Quality)

Someone in your bloodline has had the misfortune of getting down with a deep one and living to tell the tale (or undergoing a transformation ritual). The good news is you're a good swimmer, the bad news is you're probably not going to stay too pretty and and those bad dreams aren't going away). On the plus side you gain a +2 to Sports, the ability to breath underwater, and Natural Toughness (due to the slippery nature of your skin). On the negative side the call of Cthulhu never goes away, giving you the Reoccurring Nightmares drawback. In addition you gain -1 level of Attractiveness (though many Deep One Hybrids have much more than that).

October Horror Movie Challenge - Stake Land 2 (2016)

This is no poster for Stake Land 2, so here's a shot of a more mature (and bitter) Martin.
Synopsis: After New Eden and his new family is massacred Martin seeks out the only man that can help him get revenge, Mister.

The Good: Nick Damici and Connor Paolo are an amazing duo. I'd love to see them work together on other projects. This film is a true sequel and references events and characters from the first. It further builds on the lore of the movies and we get a glimpse into Mister's history. Another thing I liked about this movie is that there was an older gay couple (Doc and another gent that Mister used to run with) that are adorable.Their relationship is never made a big deal, but it's sweet and feels genuine.

The Bad: For this movie to happen, the relatively happy ending of the first had to be broken. That does make me sad.

Final Thoughts: I just randomly found out this was going to debut on Syfy this past weekend. There's no promotional materiel for it, which is a bit disappointing.

In Your Game: Once again if you're playing All Flesh Must Be Eaten, I've got your Stake Land vamps here. If you're playing Cinematic Unisystem the vamp quicksheets in Buffy or Angel will do, though you should decrease the intelligence to 1. Also stats for Mister can be found here.
