We Are Jimothy

If you've been on the internet recently (and I'm assuming you have if you're reading this), you've seen tons of memes and things about Jimothy. He kind of looks like a furry Squonk to me, which makes me wonder if the original "squonk" was a critter with the same physical condition. If you'd like to add him to your D&D game or just check out his official stats you can do so on D&D Beyond.

Dagger Danger

June 11th is International Day of Play. In honor of that D&D Beyond is offering another free Borderlands Quest for anyone to claim.

Dagger Danger is a short quest the player's find on the job board in the Keep. The characters are tasked with interring a kobold lair and retrieving a heirloom dagger. It's short, but includes a few kinds of encounters, a variety of foes, and some roleplay opportunities. I'll be adding this one to my Heroes of the Borderlands sessions.

If haven't already, you can still claim last year's adventure, Goblin Trouble, for free as well.

D&D with T-E-D

I've not watched the Ted prequel series on Peacock, but apparently they did a D&D episode which featured Brennan Lee Mulligan. As problematic at Seth McFarlane's humor can be, I enjoyed the Ted movies and I'll have to check this episode out. The show has partnered with WotC to talk about what D&D is and a very surface level version of how to play. Want to get someone interested in the game. Show them this video.

Additionally there is some Ted-centric content of D&D Beyond. There are level 3 Ted Pre-Made Characters you can claim on the site.

Cthulhu By Torchlight

Cthulhu by Torchlight is a D&D Beyond exclusive toolkit for D&D 2024 by the masters of mythos gaming, Chaosium. The book includes an introduction to the Cthulhu Mythos and has seven chapters.

Chapter 1 introduces passions and dreadful insights. Characters in horror stories often make decisions that make little logical sense. That's because they are driven by their passions. These are beliefs that shape their actions. With the new rules you can draw upon those to gain bonus. A dreadful insight is essentially a passion that you discover about yourself and can ultimately lead to destruction. Player's can create their own passions and dreadful insight or use the ones provided.

Chapter 2 includes a new backgrounds (with new tools) and and five new origin feats. Mythos Investigators have seen through the veil and been changed by their exposure to the Mythos. I like all of these feats and honestly they can work for anyone, but are particularly appropriate (and useful) for Mythos Investigators.

Chapter 3 includes a new subclass for all the base classes:
  • Path of the Spell Scorned (Barbarian) - Touched by magic, these barbarians gain the ability to fight back against otherworldly and spellcasting foes
  • College of Drama (Bard) - These bards are adept at playing roles and can even impart their acting abilities onto others, making them excellent infiltrators
  • Apocalypse Domain (Cleric) - Clerics that tap into the energy of ending and demise, they are often considered heretics by the other faiths
  • Circle of the Symbiote (Druid) - These druids see plant life just as valuable as animal life and allow a plant to symbiotically grow and become a part of them
  • Hero (Fighter) - Heroes are needed to face the horrors of the world and these fighters do so while inspiring others
  • Warrior of Cosmic Balance (Monk) - The aesthetics  are guardians of the mortal realm and specialize in fighting back extraplanar horrors
  • Oath of the Guardian (Paladin) - Noble warriors that are empowered by their oaths to protect the common folk.
  • Trail Warden (Ranger) - Wilderness warriors that pledge to lead others into the wilderness and make sure they make it out alive
  • Shadow Stalker (Rogue) - Feeling a call to the void, these rogues allow true darkness into their hearts, granting amazing stealth abilities
  • Hunger Darker (Sorcerer) - Born with innate magic, these sorcerers have an arcane hunger that seeks to claw its way out
  • Exalted Assembly of the Feline Court (Warlock) - These warlocks have struck a bargain the cats of the Dreamlands, which seek to protect mortals from Mythos threats.
  • Bibliomancy (Wizard) - Instead of just seeing symbols and words as a means to the ends, these wizards believe they are the true building blocks of the multiverse.
Chapter 4 introduces new Mythos spells. Anyone familiar with the Mythos will recognize many of these spell names. An aspect I like about these spells is the new optional rule. When casting a Mythos spell it's possible that they acquire the "Power at Any Cost" passion, which influences them to gain more Mythos knowledge and magic.

Chapter 5 discusses how to run Mythos adventures. Their are foes divided into level based tier lists. Some of these monsters are from the Monster Manual while others are statted later in this book. The chapter does an excellent job of presenting what a typical mythos adventure is like and the elements that are common. This includes interesting twists and how to use 5e's rules thematically.

Chapter 6 presents Mythos tomes. These are special magic items tied to loathsome Mythos entities. Five infamous ones are detailed, including The King In Yellow and the Necronomicon. The chapter ends with a discussion on using these tomes in your game.

Chapter 7 details 20 different iconic mythos monsters (technically more if you count the variants). These range from the lowly Rat-Thing to Great Cthulhu himself. As you might expect, some of these creatures are incredibly deadly, even to mighty 5e characters. There's also a discussion of how existing MM monsters can be used as Mythos creatures. One final thing about this chapter I like is that exposure to these creatures can cause players to gain Mythos monster specific insights. This is a nice way to show how these monstrosities warp a mortal's mind.

I wish this was a physical book, but I still think it's fantastic. If you're a horror fan (especially of things Lovecraftian) and use D&D Beyond I highly recommend this one.

Double, Double Goblin Trouble

I know the title is bad, but I figured since I couldn't come up with a clever one I'd use a dumb one. To hype the upcoming Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set and to celebrate International Day of Play (June 11), WotC released a free into adventure Borderlands Quest: Goblin Trouble on D&D Beyond.

The adventure is short and straight forward. Helpful read aloud and guiding text is presented for new DM's. The quest is simple. The party are hired by the Castellan of the Keep to retrieve gift. There they encounter bandits and goblins.

You can get a peak of the D&D 2024 take on the Borderlands and what's in the boxed set by checking out the new trailer.

Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn

Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn is a new free D&D adventure available on D&D Beyond. It's a 4th level adventure written for D&D 2024/One D&D (or what I'm just referring to as 5.5).

Kelek the evil mage has stolen Uni the unicorn's horn and absconded with it to a demiplane. Players can play as the six heroes from the D&D animated series (and their new cleric friend, Niko) or play as their own characters.

The adventure itself is meant to be played in a single session, so it only features a few encounters. Most of the encounters can be solved with blade and sword or diplomacy.

If you're a fan of of the series you definitely want to check this out. We get stats for older versions of our favorite protagonists. This includes official stats for their powerful magic items. Finally, Venger, the big bad of the series, even makes a cameo.

The adventure can be played in the Realm the series featured, though there are also prompts for using it on Krynn, Faerun, and Oerth.

#RPGaDay 2024 - Day 29

 "Awesome app"

If you've been paying attention this month, I don't use much tech. I sometimes use D&D Beyond to look things up. One app I do find super useful is The Crawler's Companion. This free DCC app is super useful for that game.

Don't have the funky dice needed for DCC? The app has you. Need Critical Hit and Failure charts? The app has you. Quick rules references? The app has you. Spell references to those complicated DCC spells? The app has you. Finally need to generate 0-level characters, dragons, demons, swords, and other things? You might be shocked to find out the app has you.

Seriously, if you you play DCC and haven't checked it out, you're missing out.

Update: Apparently the phone app version is no longer functional. The HTML version still works and is what I’ve used in the past. It’s easy to use on phones.

D&D and the Holidays

A few days ago Preparing a Winter Festival for the Holidays in D&D was posted on D&D Beyond. The article is broke down into five parts. The first discusses why you're doing a winter festival in your game. The second discusses using real world traditions.  Some examples given are Evergreens and Yule Logs, Lord of Misrule, Wassailing, and the Wild Hunt. Each tradition is discussed in game terms. THis is followed by reindeer games to celebrate during the festival. Snapdragon/Flapdragon (which I recently learned of), Ice Kolf, King of the Bean, and good 'ol fashion sledding and snowballs fights are also discussed. Three pre-existing D&D holidays for Faerun, Eberron's Sharn, and Exandria. Finally some fictional inspiration is also given: Fraggle Rock, Star Wars Holiday Special, Discworld's Hogswatch Night, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and the classic Rankin/Bass holiday cartoons.

I know of one official D&D winter holiday adventure, Winter's Splendor. It's a two hour adventure set in Waterdeep. It involves potential big bads from Dragon Heist, though given the time of year its set they shouldn't be the main villains. There is also a reference to to Barovia and my favorite npc, Gadof Blinksy!

If you are looking for more holiday themed adventures (all year long) Frog God Games has several:

Do you ever run holiday themed sessions? Are festivals and important part of your games? I've definitely run Mutants and Masterminds Christmas adventures, but not much else.

Claim Lost Mine of Phandelver While You Still Can

Just wanted to give folks a heads up. You have until October 6th to claim Lost Mine of Phandelver on D&D Beyond for free. After that time, Intro to Stormwreck Isle will become the free unlockable adventure. If you claim the original Phandelver adventure, you will still have access to it once Stormwreck takes it s place.

I've seen folks complain about it, but I think Lost Mine is one of my favorite starter adventures. There's a lot to it and Phandelver seems to be a popular spot, since it's the basis for three 5e adventures.

Can You Clear The Lightning Keep?

Lightning Keep is a 5e adventure for 4-6 level 3 characters. Set in any world, it uses creatures from Monstrous Compendium 3: Minecraft Creatures and shows how you can incorporate that content into a regular game.

A rampaging dragon has threatened the country side and villagers have sought out the characters to clear a castle that was a safe haven created by a legendary werewolf knight. Characters will need to clear dangerous creatures, allowing the refugees to take shelter and protect themselves with the keep's magical defenses.

There are some great bits of Minecraft lore in the game. For example there are eight wolves of Overworld from the compendium that approach the characters. If  characters throw them meat, they will accept and flee. However if you offer them a bone, they will become friendly to pc's (which is how you tame wolves in the game).

You can claim this free adventure here.

Honor Among Thieves Magic Items (Spoilers)

Going to start by saying I watched D&D: Honor Among Thieves and thought it was fantastic. I won't go on too much, but I'll just say I was entertained and would pay to see it again in theaters.

D&D Beyond has released more 5e movie content. In addition to the characters stats, they've released Legendary Magic Items, featuring items from the film. These are the items:

  • Helm of Disjunction - a sleek golden helm created by Mordenkainen that can disrupt magic
  • Hither-Thither Staff - a Portal Gun for 5e
  • Horn of Beckoning Death - a plot device item that can be used to create and army of zombies for the Red Wizards of Thay
  • Red Wizard Blade - tied to the Negative Plane, these blades do extra necrotic damage and those killed by it are unable to be raised except by the most powerful magic
  • Tablet of Reawakening - essentially an upgraded Scroll of Resurrection, it allows true resurrection

Monstrous Compendium of Minecraft Creatures

I didn't expect this one, but to be honest, I don't hate it. Earlier today WotC and Mojang Studios announced that D&D will be crossing over with Minecraft. The paid content will bring beholders and the like to the world's most played video game. I think this is cool and gets the brand out to more folks (especially kids), though I know there are people that will complain.

A new pdf Monstrous Compendium of Minecraft creatures was also released on D&D Beyond. The release has five monsters. They are:

  • Blaze - elemental creatures tied to the Nether, an inhospitable dimension tied to the main Overworld
  • Creeper - iconic green menaces of Minecraft, these creatures sneak up on you, hiss, and explode
  • Ender Dragon - power boss monster tied to the dark End dimension
  • Enderman - bipedal aberrant tied to the End
  • Wolf of the Overworld - wolves that roam the Overworld, statistically they are nearly identical to regular D&D wolves (lose keen senses, but have a higher Perception bonus)

The Ender Dragon is pretty cool and would make a worthy big bad for an adventure. The other stats have uses too. Just describe their physical appearance differently and they work in any game. My only complain about this one is hyperlinks over certain end/ender items that go to a broken link. Otherwise this is a cool free pdf.

Is There Honor Among Thieves?

For (what I presume is a limited time) you can claim statblocks for the heroes and villains of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on D&D Beyond

You get seven stat blocks (the six characters pictured above and a 7th villainous Red Wizard of Thay). I know D&D Beyond and 5e has taken a major hit because of the OGL stuff, but I still thought this was cool.

Why Xavier Woods Thinks You Should Play D&D

I love Austin Creed/Xavier Woods. The dude is a nice guy and great wrestler. D&D Beyond just posted a cool promo and weirdly inspiring video that he did hyping the game. It's short and I wanted to share, because it's always cool with my interests crossover.
