Can't Have A Super Bowl Without SuperPro

Since Super Bowl LIX is tonight I decided to remind everyone that Marvel partnered with the NFL to make a superhero in the early 90's. Phil Grayfield was a football player who's career ended when he saved a child and received a knee injury. He became a sports reporter and while trying to stop some thieves that were attempting to steal from a sports fan he was interviewing he's doused in chemicals. He dons a football themed suit and becomes a superhero.

SuperPro only appeared in 13 issues (a Super Bowl Special and 12 issue main series). The serious is notoriously bad, but has developed a cult following because of that. Recently Grayfield has returned as a coach at Peter's high school in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Since the series takes place in an alternate version of the MCU, this version of Grayfield was never a superhero.

I've done SuperPro stats for two different systems so if for some strange reason you'd want to add him to your game, you can.

#RPGaDay 2024 - Day 27

 "Marvelous miniature"

I'm going to be cheeky with this one. This Wolverine Heroclix mini is quite marvelous. This was a promo figure based on What If... Vol. 1 No. 24 (What If... Wolverine Was Lord Of Vampires). The story isn't great, but it was one of the first What If stories I read when I was a kid and has stuck with me. I also figure this is a time to give a shout out to some OSR stats I did for this version of Wolverine. You can find them here.

There's No Way ANYONE Could Have Survived THAT!

I originally came across this rule,  posted by Pól Rua, on the World of Supers RPGs Facebook group. He said its one he created several years ago while running a game of Mutants & Masterminds 2e, but has used it as a possible addition in every supers game he's ran since.

I think its fantastic, gives players' agency, and fits with the genre. What are your thoughts?

OSE Supers?

Back in 2017, my friend Jonathan of Monstrous Matters released The Brawler. The free pdf presented a class for Swords & Wizardry Light inspired by supers from the public domain. He called it Light City. That lit a fire under me and over the following few years, he and I created several classes, a quick start, and some team pdfs (plus tons of write-ups on here).

Lately I've been thinking about taking some of these ideas and creating OSE versions. I know old school characters are very different in power level than modern characters, but then again old school comics are too. I don't know. Right now it's just an idea, but I think it could be fun.

Also if anyone knows of any OSE supers zines, let me know.

He's In Gotham With A Few Days To Kill

I found another cool D.L. Massey mashup.

This piece reminds me of one of the first superhero fan films I saw on YouTube, Batman Dead End. While it's not as flashy as a lot of newer ones, I still find it quite enjoyable.

You can check out some of the predator related content I've created with the links below:

Bat Prince

No new gaming content, I just found this fantastic picture of Prince taken by Jeff Katz in 1989 and had to share.

Remember Prince had two Batman (89) tracks. You can check them out here and here.

Also if you would like some Batman (89) content here's Bob the Goon for Vigilante City and Light City.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 02

Light City was created by Jonathan of Monstrous Matters. It's a supers take on Swords & Wizardry Light and I created quite a bit of content for it. Check that out here. Today's character is created using Light City: The Assembly. The artwork is from Benjamin Widdowson.

Code Name: Citizen IX
Secret Identity: Raymond Thompson
Class/Level: Supersoldier 1

Str 16 (+1)       Int 10
Dex 14             Wis 14
Con 19 (+1)     Cha 13

Attacks
Throwing Shield (+2 to hit, 1d6+1 dmg, medium range)

Equipment
Costume/Light Armor, throwing shield

Background
Raymond Davis grew up in a rough part of Light City. Seeing few options, he joined the military at 18. He served a few tours oversees, though his second tour was cut short when wounded during an operation. Raymond was chosen to take part in a new treatment being developed by a military contractor's corporation, known as the Citizen Project. The process healed his body and made him stronger. He currently operates as a vigilante in Light City. He's recently started chaffing under the corporate shadow he works in and has started teaming up with Marxman II. While they have wildly different views, the pair have done a lot of good together and have become close friends. They are currently considering forming new iteration of The Assembly.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 7

Light City is the brainchild of Jonathan of Monstrous Matters. The idea behind it was to take Swords & Wizardry Light and turn it into a supers game. I was fortunate enough help Jonathan create some great content for it. Today I'm using our quickstart, Light City: The Assembly to make my character for the challenge

Code Name: The Marxman II
Secret Identity: Yuri Maksimov
Class/Level: Marksman 1

Str 11               Int 11
Dex 17 (+1)     Wis 14
Con 12             Cha 12

HD (6 HP)
Save: 15
Movement: 12
AC 7 [12] (Dex, Light Armor)

Attacks
Bow (+2 to hit, 1d6+1 dmg, 50' range)
Bow ( +1 to hit, 1d6-1)

Other
Trick Arrows known: grappling hook (50' rope)

Equipment
Costume/Light Armor, father's bow, quiver, 20 normal arrows, 5 grappling arrows

Background
Yuri Maksimov is the son of the retired ex-Soviet hero, the Marxman. Though he was born in the US, Yuri is fascinated by Russian history and folklore. Trained in archery by his father, Yuri decided to don a mask and help the people. Though not a communist (he tends to identify as an anarcho-socialist), he adopted the name Marxman in honor of his father.

Gotham Knights Trailer

This is another DC game I'm really excited about. Going to be honest, got a few chills during Bruce's speech at the beginning. I think this is a great premise and is basically the idea I had for my Gotham City Knights Light City game. It's also really cool to see DC using the Court of Owls. They are a fantastic and frightening addition to the Batman mythos.

Light City lives on... en Francais!

Jonathan from Monstrous Matters informed me that there is a gent that is working on fully fleshing out Light City - The Assembly and translating it into French. I'm flattered by this and thought I'd direct folks to the WIP for it.

Thoughts on the Twin Cities (Light and Vigilante)

No new gaming content in this one either. I promise more will come soon. I just felt like talking about some stuff on my mind and mention future plans.

Some folks may have noticed that I've not been making as much Light City content recently. I love it it but I feel like it's gone as far as I can take it for now. The reason I created my oddball classes and adversary books is because Jonathan is working on the core iconic classes. He's much busier with real life than I am and they're taking a bit. Light City is his baby though and I wouldn't feel right doing them myself, so until they get finished, I think I'm hanging up my LC cape for now.

That being said. I still have supers on the brain.  If you're a regular reader you know I've become a big fan of Bloat Games SURVIVE THIS!! line. With the upcoming release of SURVIVE THIS!! Vigilante City that fandom is only growing. Vigilante City is going to open to third party publishers, so of course I'm going to make content for it. I definitely want to make a Vigilante City zine. I've already contacted a few folks I know that are gamers and comic book fans. They all seem to be on board. Also, my buddy Dave has agreed to do some art for it. That's not all though. I have a few classes in mind and if they're not something similar to them in the core book (which has 21 classes at this point, btw), then I'll make them. This blog was originally created to be a place for me to post my own supers setting for Mutants & Masterminds. That's why the url is Punverse. Who knows? Maybe, I could do a full setting? I also like the idea I was doing with Light City of taking public domain stuff and turning it into gaming material. A pulp/golden age sourcebook for Vigilante City would be cool. After all, Batman: The Animated Series had the Gray Ghost. Oh yeah, I also have these bad boys. There's all sort of fun stuff that could come from it.

Light City - Russell

This weekend I watched Deadpool 2... twice. I told my Dad I'd watch it with him and then my girlfriend also wanted to see it. I really liked the film. It actually had a pretty coherent plot for a Deadpool story and wasn't just "Deadpool kills people"... though, you know, he totally did kill a lot of people. I decided to stat one of the character. This post has some minor spoilers.

Light City - Sentinels

Sentinel

These blast have a medium range and anyone hit by them must make a saving throw or be knocked unconscious. Once a sentinel has used this ability it must recharge it (which takes 1d6 rounds).

These mutant hunting robots could be reskinned to represent any giant robots in your Light City game

It's Saturday Night!

It's been a great week, I love this song, and it's Saturday night!

The Devil's Key

This mythic artifact grants it's bearer great power. It is imbued with the power of the first fallen angel, the true and original lord of Hell. While wearing the key, the owner gains 20 extra hit points (which replenish every morning at dawn). In addition, they gain -2 [+2] bonus to AC and a +2 to hit and damage with all attacks (including spells). Finally they get a number of attacks each round equal their level +1 against foes of 1 HD or less (if the wearer is a fighter this stacks with that ability). NPC’s use their HD instead of level. The artifact is priceless and sought after by many powerful individuals.
