Music Monday - I’ll Form The Head

For this Music Monday I thought I’d bring back some Voltron-inspired nerdiness from the past.

Super Sentai Saturday - Santa Claus

To spread some holiday cheer I thought I'd spread this official Power Rangers Santa Claus art. Featured in the Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid - Santa vs Heximas Pack, it seems that Saint Nick is a red ranger.

If you want to add his foe, Heximas and his Rocket Sleigh, to your Power Rangers game you can do so by downloading the free RPG pdf pack here.

Super Sentai Saturday - Godzilla vs. Power Rangers

I've not read the Boom Studios miniseries that focuses on this conflict, but that doesn't mean I can't get behind. Apparently Matt Sandbrook feels the same way based on this piece.

Super Sentai Saturday - Shin Japan Heroes Ultimate Robot

The Shin Japan Heroes project is a merchandise collaboration between Evangelion, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Godzilla. In this new short, the four properties combine to create a Power Ranger Megazord-like giant robot.

Super Sentai Saturday - Finger Ring Friends

This Power Ranger spoof from White Kids U Know is goofy as Hell and definitely nsfw. I laughed my butt off watching it though and wanted to share. Interesting sidenote, the gent in the yellow is Zach Creggar, director of 2022's Barbarian.

Super Sentai Saturday - Power Rangers Metal Cover

I love Leo's covers so of course I had to share his cover of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cover. The cover is fun and the video as a whole is absolutely ridiculous.

Super Sentai Saturday - Go! Go! Loser Ranger!

Sentai Daishikkaku aka Go! Go! Loser Ranger!  (also known as Ranger Reject) is a manga and soon to be released anime in sentai genre. The series is an action-comedy deconstruction of the sentai genre, similar to something like The Boys (though way less grim and brutal). Here's the plot:

Thirteen years ago an evil army from space invaded Earth. They faced the Power Ranger-like Dragon Keepers, and their super weapons, the Divine Tools. It took a year, but the army was defeated and its leaders killed. However, the Dragon Keepers like the power and importance the war gave them so they persuaded the remaining foot soldiers (who are nearly immortal) to keep the war going on by having weekly battles. The protagonist, Footsoldier D, is a member of the invading army and has vowed to infiltrate the Dragon Keepers and show the world what kind of frauds they truly are.

I've said it before. I'm getting tired of gritty takes and superhero deconstruction. However, I think the idea for this one sound fun. I also like the fact it's a comedic series. I might pick up the manga and definitely want to watch the series. It looks like an interesting take on the Power Rangers.

Super Sentai Saturday - Leairis Cosplay (NSFW)

I decided to kickoff the inaugural Super Sentai Saturday with a bang.

Leairis is a cosplay, artist, and creator of spicy content. She has some great Power Ranger cosplay (both lewd and sfw) that's fantastic, like these shots taken by TRD Cosplay Photography.

This is a recently completed piece of Power Rangers art she created.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always

The trailer for the the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th anniversary special, Once & Always, dropped today. Even if I don't watch it regularly, I love Power Rangers, and MMPR is one my nostalgic jams. Check out the trailer:

Several cast members are returning for special. The Rangers appearing are:

Zach Taylor - original Black Ranger
Billy Cranston - original Blue Ranger
Rocky DeSantos - second Red Ranger
Katherine "Kat" Hillard - second Pink Ranger

Trini Kwan the original Yellow Ranger will appear in flashbacks. Charlie Kersh is being introduced as her daughter Minh Kwan and based on the synopsis will become the new Yellow Ranger in the special. It hasn't been disclosed who's playing the Green Ranger, but according to friends Jason David Frank wanted nothing to do with the special.

Other former Rangers will also appear in the special.
Adam Park - second Black Ranger
Aisha Campbell - second Yellow Ranger

Finally Alpha 5 and Rita Repulsa are back as well. Rita appears as a robot and I'll be interested in seeing if this is the actual Rita or something truly new (since Rita was purified and a force of good in later Power Rangers series).

So yeah, I'm pretty excited for this one. It debuts April 19th on Netflix. I'll also take this time to mention a new semi normal feature I'm adding to the Halls, Super Sentai Saturday. These will just be random Power Ranger related posts (some gaming, some not).

Legend of the White Dragon Teaser Trailer

On November 19, 2022 Jason David Frank died. While I didn't always agree with his view points, I was a fan. JDF played Tommy Oliver int he Power Ranger franchise (in a few different series) and was a big part of my childhood. His final project, Legend of the White Dragon, is a gritty spin on the Power Rangers franchise. This is kind of ironic because Frank came out against the gritty fan film Power/Rangers because its adult centered content.

Though JDF has passed, the film will still be released. It's currently in post-production and is expected to release this year.

Power/Rangers (2015 Fan Film)

Right now G.I. Joe is the only Essence20 game I have, but I definitely plan on picking up both Transformers and Power Rangers. I'm obsessing over media associated with the franchises. I shared the Joseph Kahn's gritty Power/Rangers fan film on here before, but the video I linked was taken down. Thought I'd repost it.

While I don't plan on doing a super dark take on the Rangers like this, there are some ideas and things I really like about it.

Enter The Collection Review

Enter the Collection was the 2021 Free RPG Day offering from Renegade Games Studios. The adventure uses their Essence20 system and was designed to be used for the Power Rangers, GI Joe, and Transformers RPGS. This is an interesting choice because this dropped in October 16, 2021 and the first of those games (Power Rangers) wasn't released until January 26th, 2022. That meant this adventure was basically useless for 3.5 months.

The characters have a contact that ask them to look into a situation in the suburban community of Crystal Springs. A local professor has made a strange discovery and her colleague has gone missing. The culprits are a criminal organization called The Collection. They are dumping chemicals in the local lake and kidnapped the missing gentleman when he got too close.

Part I of the adventure is investigative.  The characters can search the missing man's house, avoiding nosy neighbors and potentially coming into conflict with suburban security guards and local police. They can then search the local lake. Day and night time search yield different results. During the night they can stumble across agents of The Collection. They can then engage these forces which may lead to Part II.

Part II is a late night chase. The different skill rolls needed are presented.

Party III of the adventure finds the characters coming up on abandoned airfield. They must make it past The Collection's guards The Keeper (commander of this group), a Vault (heavily armored soldier), pilot, and co-pilot await them. The Keeper then sets a bomb and seeks to escape. The players have a variety of tasks they can attempt: disarming the bomb, taking the hostage and running, stopping The Collection forces.

After the adventure the party have made enemies of The Collection, which can come back to bite them later. Additionally they've uncovered the truth of the chemical dumping and can a local politician to justice.

The adventure is generic enough that I can see how it is appropriate to all three settings. While primarily mundane, some of the foes do have access to an alien war drug, which add a sci-fi element. The adventure adds the following threats, which can be used in any of the games. They are:

  • Longhall Homes Security Guard  - Threat Level 0
  • Crystal Springs Police Officer  - Threat Level 1
  • Collector Foot Soldier  - Threat Level 2
  • Carry-All Halftrack (Land Vehicle)  - Threat Level 2
  • Badger ATV (Land Vehicle)  - Threat Level 2
  • Collection Stalker  - Threat Level 6
  • Collection Keeper  - Threat Level 4
  • Collection Vault  - Threat Level 6
  • Sparrowhawk Stealth Jet (Air Vehicle) - Threat Level 3
In addition the Ajax Compound Inject and Camouflage Pop-Up are new pieces of equipment you can add to your game.

This seems like it a fun adventure and I will definitely use it when I finally get to run an Essence20 game. You can pick this one up on Ebay, Noble Knight, and other online retailers.

Jim Lee's X-Men #1 Cover Tributes

I was born in the 80's but spent most of my childhood and adolescence in the 90's. Like anyone else reading comics in the early 90's, I had at least one of the Jim Lee X-Men covers (I had the Magneto one). It's just such an iconic image.

Over the years there have been a few tributes. These are my favorites.

By far my favorite is the DCeased: War of the Undead Gods is my favorite. While I love comics in general, DC is and probably always be my favorite. Plus, I love DCeased.

Created by Todd McFarlane for his Scorched miniseries, this one is really cool too. I can't say I know all the characters, but that doesn't make it any less cool.

Finally the Boom SDCC exclusive Power Rangers covers are pretty sweet.

Which is your favorite?

PG: Psycho Goreman (2020)

Synopsis
A disturbed young girl and her brother friend find an ancient alien gem that gives her control of a super powerful overlord. Dubbing him Psycho Goreman (or PG for short). Soon creatures from across the galaxy come to Earth searching for PG.

Review
Psycho Goreman is one of those unique and insane flicks. It's really dark, but instead of being depressing, the it's really humorous. There's tons of random murder and body horror, but it's all really cheesy looking. The film is bloody and gross, but in an over the top, unrealistic way. There's tons of fake blood and viscera. PG and the other aliens look like cheesy Power Ranger/Super Sentai foes. Honestly the whole film kind of feels like Power Rangers on crack.

The cast are memorable. Mimi is an absolute monster in the body of a small child and her long suffering brother Luke seems to be the only sane person in the flick. The interactions between the family, PG, and the community are fantastic.

Finally, the score is top notch. There's a great 80's dark synth vibe that tends to go with these wild horror flicks with purple themes (like Mandy). In addition to the great score you also have I'm The Heckin' Best and PG for Short, which are definitely memorable tracks.

In Your Game
As I mentioned this movie had a Power Rangers vibe to me, so I statted PG out in the vein of my White Star Power Rangers.

Pscyho Goreman (or PG for short)
Armor Class 1 [18]
Hit Dice 10
Total Hit Bonus +6
Attacks Goreblade (1d6+6) or Diabolic Magic (3d6)
Saving Throw 9
Special Horrific Transformation, Juggernaut
Movement 12
HDE/XP  12/2,600

PG is an ancient powerful evil. His goreblade is crafted from pieces his hated foe, Pandora. Though not truly a blade, it can slice through nearly anything. PG also has the ability to fire dark magic at a range of 120'. He can grow to immense size (which allows him to destroy buildings and go toe-to-toe with mecha should that sort of scenario rise). PG also has the ability to transform weaklings into hideous monstrosities. This is more of a plot power and a tool for the GM. Feel free to give PG other powers if the plot requires or it just makes a scene cooler.

Music Monday - PG for Short

Old school jam by Psycho Goreman, intergalactic warlord and apparent beat master. This track is a recap of the wild movie (which I watched this past weekend). I'll type up a review and some game content when I get the chance.

Music Monday - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers of DOOM

This video has many elements of awesome. First, it's been The Cybertronic Spree, an costumed Transformers-themed band. Then you combine the slappin' theme from Doom reboot with the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers theme. Combine all of these elements and you have geeky mashup of 100%  awesomeness.
