Benny Smackdown

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm about to dive back into Savage Worlds and give it another go. The game uses bennies, which are tokens that can be used to soak damage, help with successes, and do plot things (as of the newest edition). While I might try to pick up some superhero themed poker chips (I believe Wizkids make them as tokens for HeroClix), I think for now I'm going to use my WWE Power Chipz. This was a game WWE released at some point. I know little about it, but I picked these up a while back and they would make excellent bennies.

Do you play Savage Worlds? If so what do you use for bennies?

Getting Super Savage!

I've seen a few friends posting about Savage Worlds recently and it me itching to try to the system again. I have a physical copy of one of the earlier versions of the Explorer's Edition (I understand  there are a few versions of it). I also have a pdf of the Savage Worlds Adventurer Edition Core Rules because of my amazing friend, Mark at Cross Planes

I want to do some supers stuff with it. I've owned Necessary Evil for a while. I bought the pdf and ordered a physical copy of Necessary Evil: Breakout last Friday. Skimmed the pdf and look forward to diving into the physical copy soon. I've not ordered Bedlam City yet, but I used it in my Freedom City games back when I used to run Mutants and Masterminds. It's Iron Age and over the top, but I kind of love it. Haven't totally locked in on what I'm going to to do, but I think I'm going to try to run Breakout (since it takes place before the original Necessary Evil). If my group enjoys it then I'll run the original. If that goes well I'll pick up the Bedlam City Campaign City and start running non-NE supers with the system.

Necessary Evil 5Evo

The Fate Of The World Lies With The Scum Of The Earth!

When the super heroes of the world are blown to kingdom come by an unstoppable army of invading aliens, who will save the day? Evil… The only forces left to take on the alien menace are the crafty and self-serving super-villains!

That is the premise of Pinnacle Entertainment Group's Savage Worlds game, Necessary Evil. Check out this review by Eric from Bloat Games. I think it's brilliant and I know folks that have played it that swear by it. I think it sounds fantastic, I just don't care for Savage Worlds. I just never really got into the system. In many ways it's very similar to Cinematic Unisystem, one of my favorites, and that may have something to do with it. It's close, but not close enough.

As you know if you follow the blog or are friends with me on Facebook, I've been really into the idea of 5e supers again. That lead me to the yesterday of using Limitless Adventures Carbide City #1 and #2 to run Necessary Evil. Players can create their villains (or D-list heroes if they are more comfortable with that) using the archetypes from Carbide City. I'll also allow character to use my Toxic Protector archetype. I think I'm going to create some more villainous archetypes, like Necromancer, Parasite, and Assassin too

The plan is to use the setting and plot point campaign from Necessary Evil and the stats and rules from Carbide City. The npcs and statblocks from the Carbide City books (and the Monster Manual) will help combat things. I also have a lot of 5e supers content I've made that can be used. Finally, I feel pretty comfortable making stats if there is something those things don't cover.

I think the game will have a Suicide Squad-esque vibe and I'm good with that. Players will be playing the bad guys, but that doesn't mean there can't be some elements of redemption happening. I could be wrong, but I'm excited to find out. I'm going to start gathering players, though I think I'm going to wait til I have my Carbide City #2 print copy before I start playing.

Do you have any experience with Necessary Evil? If so, what's your take on the game?

Necessary Evil and the Savage Worlds Super Powers Companion (2nd Edition)

"The Fate of the world lies with the scum of the Earth!

When the super heroes of the world are blown to kingdom come by an unstoppable army of invading aliens, who will save the day? Evil... The only forces left to take on the alien menace are the crafty and self-serving super-villains!"

The supers bug has been biting my friends and I recently and I've thought about running Necessary Evil for Savage Worlds. I have SW Explorer's Edition and Necessary Evil Explorer's Edition. With these books I have everything I need to run Necessary Evil.

I don't keep up with Savage Worlds and I recently found out that there's another separate Necessary Evil campaign, Necessary Evil: Breakout. I know that if I run the game, I'll run the original, however I can't decide if I want to use the Explorer's Edition or if I want to expand the game by picking up the second edition of the Savage Worlds Super Hero Companion.

For those of you that play Savage Worlds, what do you recommend? I know that I have all I need right now. However, would it benefit my group and I to pick up the Super Hero Companion (and the Aliens Update)? If I decide to use the companion there are several free supplemental things I could use to flesh out the game, but I might have to work to convert some things from the Explorer's Edition.
