Slashers & Survivors

I'm working on my first standalone game for The Lone Bards, Slasher & Survivors. 

I've talked about the game a few times on Facebook, but for those unfamiliar, I'll give a brief synopsis/background. 

The game will be a totally revised version of our super rule-lite, Slashers and Victims. The original game was designed to be perfect for one-shots, which puts it totally in line with Slasher flicks. However, with the success of tv series like Scream Queens, Slasher, and American Horror Story: 1984, I've come to believe you could have a slasher themed on-going series. The new version will take all the flexibility of the original and expand it using Bloat Games The Blackest of Deaths rules as a base. 

The game rules will be completed soon, though I want to to make sure I spend plenty of time playtesting and making sure it's as awesome as I think it will be before taking it to Kickstarter.

Expect regular updates. If you have any questions or suggestions, send them our way.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Pool Party Massacre (2017)

Like most of the films I watch for the challenge, this is free to watch movie on Tubi. I've reviewed this flick a few times, so this will sound really familiar if you've followed the blog for a while.

What started out as a relaxing summer day by the pool for a group of high maintenance young socialites quickly becomes a nightmare when an unknown killer begins stalking and murdering them one by one.

If you are a fan of 80's slasher movies, then this has everything you need. The flick has a plethora of gorgeous ladies, including a funny cameo by Leeanna Vamp. The are bare breasts and some really nice asses, which is a slasher staple. The slasher uses a variety of tools, which keeps things interesting and bloody. There's also a ton of humor in this flick. The cast have some great lines and I think Clay steals every scene he's in. The plot is simple enough, but has some nice twists and things to keep it fresh. The director, Drew Marvick, has a love of slashers and horror and it shows in this movie. ad, not the movies.

The actor that plays Troy is my old friend, Mark Justice. He had a special screening of this one back in my hometown a few years ago. Recently having a successful fundraising campaign, a sequel has officially been announced!

Free RPG 2 - No Money, No Problem

Recently the fine folk of Exalted Funeral announced they would be doing a Free RPG event.

For the entire month of July we are hosting a month long Free RPG event where we will host ALL submitted products and hand select 4 entries to be printed (quantity of 25 & hand numbered)

Music Monday - Friends With No Faces

Ever wanted a cannibal version of Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places? Well here's the cover/fan video you never knew you needed. Created by The Merkins, the fine folks that brought us the Slashstreet Boys, this is a fun Texas Chainsaw Massacre themed parody.

And to be meta, they released a reaction/review video of their own starring Freddy Kreuger.

Slashback Video and Tape Head (S&V Light)

Slashback Video and Revenge of Slashback Video are art installations that pay homage to the retro horror glory of video rental joints in the 80's and 90's. Check out these fun promo videos they did with Onyx the Fortuitous (aka Weird Satanist Guy).

The installation even has it's own soundtrack and mascot, Tape Head. Though not much is known about the slasher, I've decided to come up with my own stats for him. These are for Slashers & Victims Light. Later this week I'll probably do Dark Places & Demogorgons stats for him.

Tape Head

AC 5 [14]   HD: 5    Attacks: Weapon (1d6-1) Move: 12

Tape Head can "fast forward" and "rewind" time. He can use Fast Forward to teleport to any location within 60' that he could logically get too. He can Rewind to negate a successful attack. When he uses either of these abilities he cannot use them again until he makes a successful attack. When using these abilities, it appears that reality itself is a video tape that is being sped up or slowed down.

Weakness: Because of his ties to VHS, Tape Head is unable to use his powers when near magnets.

Since it's Friday the 13th, I thought it would be a nice time to remind folks about Slashers & Victims Light and address an issue I have with it. You can download Slashers & Victims Light here at no cost. You also need Swords & Wizardry Light which is free and can be downloaded here. The game lets you do slasher movie based one shots or mini campaigns. I had a lot of fun making it and it was reasonably well received. It's kind of a sore spot for me though. 

I had grand plans to help get word out for the game. I created an email and offered to mail full color versions of the game and a unique slasher to everyone that emailed me. Unfortunately, that was right before I found out I had a bone infection and had to take a few months leave from work. Now I understand that things happen, but I still feel bad not following through with those promises then.  To any of you that never got your slashers, sorry about that. 

While I still love slashers, I haven't been in that mindset, so I've not really worked on anything for it recently. Still I did create some extra content for it, so here's an index of that material.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Re-Animator (1985)

Synopsis: The arrival of medical student Herbet West sets of a series of experiments on the quiet medical campus of Miskatonic University.

The Good: Jeffrey Combs version of Herbert West is one of my all time favourite fictional characters. He just has a deadpan delivery that I love and he's perfect at playing creepy obsessive. Bruce Abbot's Dan is a great protagonist and Barbara Crampton is a classic scream queen. David Gale's Dr. Hill is so creepy (especially after being decapitated and trying to go down on co-ed).

The Bad: I love this movie so I don't really have anything bad to say. The head scene is icky/creepy, but other than that I have no complaints.

Final Thoughts: I'm super stoked. This is my favourite horror movie and I was able to watch a 4K restoration of it at Gateway Film Center last night.

In Your Game: Here are some goodies for Slashers & Victims Light (and by extension Swords & Wizardry Light).

Reanimating Reagent - This glowing green liquid, when injected into a corpse, will reanimate dead flesh. These reanimated corpses may retain some of their memories, but will function on a violent animalistic level. While extremely dangerous (and addictive) it can be used on living beings to focus the mind (and provide euphoria). Living subjects get a +4 on all mental-based rolls for 2d6 hours.

The reainamted don't technically die at 0 HP. At that point they are considered dismembered/disabled, but body parts can still move and technically attack.

Remember you can get Slashers & Victims Light for free. Here's a new weakness you can add to any slasher.

Boyband - Whenever confronting a victim the slasher must make a saving throw or break out into song and dance. If they are able to dance uninterrupted for 4 rounds they get a permanent  +3 bonus against the target. 

October Horror Movie Challenge - The Babysitter (2017)

Synopsis: Nerdy Cole soon discovers that his hot, but nerdy babysitter, Bee is involved in a satanic cult and must fend for his life.

The Good:  This movie has a beautiful and funny cast. I literally laughed out loud way more then I expected too. Cole and Bee's relationship feels right and sweet. Cole is a great protagonist and it's cool to see mature (due to the crazy circumstances he's put in). Robbie Ammel's Max was my favourite character. He was just hot and insane. He had the best lines. Also, it was great to see Ken Marino as a non-douche bag character.

The Bad: There was some definite juvenile humor, but as I've said several times, I don't look to horror movies for high brow humor. Bee's friends were kind of annoying, but that's not a deal breaker (and was intentional).

Final Thoughts: This is a fun horror comedy. It just debuted last Friday on Netflix.

In Your Game: 

In Slashers & Victims Light, I'd say that Max would be equivalent of a Slasher In Training. The other cult members might be Horror Movie Fanatics or tbh, even bystanders.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Cold Prey (2006)

Synopsis: Five 20 somethings decide to take a snowboarding trip. One of them gets hurt and they're forced to take shelter in an abandoned hotel. The hotel has a dark history, one they will soon confront.

The Good: This movie has the classic slasher movie characters, but they're all really likable and you really want them to make it (even though they obviously all don't). The setting is gorgeous and formidable.  

The Bad: The movie has a slow start, but I expect that from slasher flicks. Also, if you don't like subtitles, avoid this one.

Final Thoughts: I think this is one of the best slasher flicks of the past 20 years or so.

In Your Game: 

The Mountain Man

AC 7 [12]   HD: 5    Attacks: Weapon (1d6+2 Move: 12 Special: Immune to cold damage. Ignores they first point of damage dealt by every attack.

Weakness: His affinity for the cold has made the Mountain Man more susceptible to heat and fire attacks. He takes and extra 1d3 points of damage from attacks involving heat and flames.

October Horror Movie Challenge - Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)

Synopsis: This film picks up right after the events of Friday the 13th Part 2. Jason steals some clothes, kills a couple of store owners, and finds a new group of young sinning adults to kill.

The Good:  Like part 2 this is a good 'ol fashioned 80's slasher. None of the kills are particularly spectacular, but there are some really good ones.

The Bad: This movie was made for 3D and the gags are pretty damn cheesy. It's even weirder when you don't watch it in 3D.

Final Thoughts: This Friday the 13th has my favourite victim of the series, Sheldon "Shelley" Finkelstein. Shelley is a nerdy clown, into horror, and chubby. He's also the reason Jason has the hockey mask.

In Your Game: The Relentless Stalker for Slashers & Victims Light is essentially this version of Jason Vorhees. That being said I've decided to add a new item for S&V Light. 

Shelley's Mask
The hockey mask worn by Jason (taken from Shelley Finkelstein) has been imbued with dark energies. The individual wearing it recieves a -1[+1] bonus to AC. However, it whispers dark things in their ears, which scream when the mask is removed (stunning the wearer for 1d3 rounds or until they're attacked).

October Horror Movie Challenge - Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

Synopsis: Counselor Paul has decided to create a camp counselor training course at Camp Crystal Lake. Soon he and his counselors find themselves being stalked by Jason Vorhees!

The Good: There are some really good and memorable kills in this one. Some are played for laughs, others have nice gore. 

The Bad: This movie has one of the confusing "did it happen" endings. Seriously, not even the actor that played Paul knows if his character survived.

Final Thoughts: This is our first really taste of Jason Vorhees and it's a classic. You should check out this 13 fun facts about it. I'm going to be honest, some of them surprised me.

In Your Game: If you're wanting to include this version of Jason in your Slashers & Victims Light game, this version of him was the inspiration for the Relentless Stalker.

Final Thoughts:  I saw a special screening of this last night in my hometown and I laughed my ass off. You can get learn more about the folks that made it and order your own copy from the Pool Party Massacre site.  I ordered the blu-ray this morning. Another cool thing is that you can order a signed copy at no extra cost. You really should check this movie out if you like horror comedies or slasher flicks.

Weakness: This slasher is really really good at what he does, but ultimately he's a dude. Unlike supernatural slashers, he's just as susceptible to weapons (whether the be machetes or ball-gagged severed heads) as any other regular Joe.

Slashers & Victims Light Available Now!

Hey folks, my free slasher movie love letter hack (pun-intended) for Swords & Wizardry Light, Slashers & Victims Light, is now available on RPGNow. Download it, look it over, and tell me what you think (on here and RPGNow).

October Horror Movie Challenge - Cult of Chucky (2017)

Synopsis: Set a few years after Curse of Chucky, Chucky returns to terrorize Nica, the protagonist of that film, who finds herself confined to an asylum for the criminally insane. It seems that Chucky has learned some new tricks.

The Good: I was really impressed with Curse of Chucky, but this one is even better. There are some great plot twists here. I don't really want to spoil what the Cult of Chucky is, but it's fantastic and there's some great banter.

The Bad: I watched the Netflix version which is not the unrated version and (like Curse of Chucky) doesn't have the post credits through back to previous films.

Final Thoughts: Director, Don Mancini, has found a way to revitalize a series that had been played out. I love even though this and Curse are reboots in a way, they have connections to all of the previous Chucky flicks. I can't wait to see what happens next.

In Your Game: Slashers & Victims Light drops Friday and one of the slashers is the killer doll. You'll have to wait til then to see stats for something like Chucky.
